America Fishtails

March 19, 2018 at 8:11 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

The New Yorker asked California Gov. Jerry Brown (D) about the current state of American politics.

“If, as now seems possible, Democrats dominate the 2018 and 2020 elections, and they end up governing as unilaterally as the Republicans have, Brown fears that ‘a cycle will be created, in which one side pushes as far as it can until it’s thrown out, then the next one does it, and then it will happen again.'”

“He compared it to a car fishtailing.”

2020 Democrats Are Already Hiring

March 19, 2018 at 8:01 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“At least a dozen possible Democratic presidential candidates have begun bolstering their teams by adding aides with campaign experience to their Senate staffs, personal offices or 2018 reelection payrolls,” Politico reports.

“The hires are never explicitly advertised or designed to be about 2020. But the behind-the-scenes shuffle is a long-overdue stage in the traditional precampaign scramble. Potential candidates who have run before — like Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders and former Vice President Joe Biden — largely have their core teams in place.”

“Yet in many other cases, chiefs of staff and senior strategists are now actively looking for new talent after receiving clear instructions from their bosses: I don’t know whether I’m going to run for president, but do everything you need to do to get me in position, just in case.”

What Hope Hicks Knows

March 19, 2018 at 7:59 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

New York Magazine runs a great profile of former White House communications director Hope Hicks.

“Hicks took out one of her notebooks, black leather with the Trump name embossed in gold on the front. She’d prayed a lot over the weekend, and also written two lists in the same bubbly print that had recently been photographed on a note card in Trump’s hand, reminding him to tell survivors of a school shooting, among other things, ‘I hear you.’ One list contained reasons to resign as White House communications director immediately; the other, reasons to wait to resign. Not resigning at all wasn’t a consideration.”

Fears of the ‘Deep State’ Are Real

March 19, 2018 at 7:50 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

A new Monmouth poll finds 53% of the American public believes that the U.S. government engages in widespread monitoring of its own citizens and worry that the U.S. government could be invading their own privacy.

Also interesting: “There are no significant partisan differences – 57% of independents, 51% of Republicans, and 50% of Democrats are at least somewhat worried the federal government is monitoring their activities. Another 24% of the American public are not too worried and 22% are not at all worried.”

Said pollster Patrick Murray: “We usually expect opinions on the operation of government to shift depending on which party is in charge. But there’s an ominous feeling by Democrats and Republicans alike that a ‘Deep State’ of unelected operatives are pulling the levers of power.”

Republicans Bet Senate Majority on Trump

March 19, 2018 at 7:37 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Politico: “His approval rating is perpetually underwater, and the pandemonium surrounding his presidency only grows the longer he’s in the job. But Senate Republicans are nevertheless making a counterintuitive, all-in bet that President Trump will save their 51-49 majority — and perhaps even help them pick up a few seats.”

“Even as fears grow within the GOP that Trump will cost Republicans the House, Senate Republicans say the president will play a starring role in the closely contested campaigns that will decide control of the chamber. Trump will be front and center in every state that helped elect the president, according to GOP senators and strategists, making the case that Democrats are hindering his agenda.”

A Big Clue About Mueller’s End Game

March 19, 2018 at 7:24 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Special counsel Robert Mueller “has focused on events since the election — not during the campaign — in his conversations with President Trump’s lawyers. The top two topics that Mueller has expressed interest in so far: the firings of FBI director James Comey and national security adviser Michael Flynn,” Axios reports.

“That suggests a focus on obstruction of justice while in office, rather than collusion with Russia during the campaign. But both sagas are interwoven with Russia: Trump himself has linked Comey’s firing to Russia, and Flynn pleaded guilty to lying to the FBI about conversations with the Russian ambassador during the transition.”

White House Says Trump Not Planning to Fire Mueller

March 18, 2018 at 8:33 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

After a weekend of combative statements by President Trump, lawyer Ty Cobb felt the need to issue this statement:

In response to media speculation and related questions being posed to the Administration, the White House yet again confirms that the President is not considering or discussing the firing of the Special Counsel, Robert Mueller.

Mike Allen: “The White House strategy had been to cooperate with Mueller. So this is an effort to turn down the temperature after a weekend of increasingly personal provocations aimed at the special counsel.”

Trump Finally Feels He Can Say What He Wants

March 18, 2018 at 8:28 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“For months, President Trump’s legal advisers implored him to avoid so much as mentioning the name of Robert Mueller, the special counsel, in his tweets, and to do nothing to provoke him or suggest his investigation is not proper,” the New York Times reports.

“Ignoring that advice over the weekend was the decision of a president who ultimately trusts only his own instincts, and now believes he has settled into the job enough to rely on them rather than the people who advise him.”

“A dozen people close to Mr. Trump or the White House, including current and former aides and longtime friends, described him as newly emboldened to say what he really feels and to ignore the cautions of those around him.”

New Hampshire Activity Sparks Talk of Trump Challenge

March 18, 2018 at 8:17 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Sen. Jeff Flake (R-AZ) received a standing ovation from a crowd of business leaders and political junkies in New Hampshire on Friday after decrying the “degradation of the United States and her values” by the current occupant of the White House, the Washington Post reports.

Ohio Gov. John Kasich (R), who ran for the GOP nomination in 2016, will return to the nation’s first primary state early next month for a “fireside chat” at a college.

“And on Monday, President Trump — whose New Hampshire primary win two years ago set him on a course for the presidency — is slated to make an appearance in the state for the first time since 2016.”

Trump Had White House Staff Sign NDAs

March 18, 2018 at 5:59 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Ruth Marcus: “In the early months of the administration, at the behest of now-President Trump, who was furious over leaks from within the White House, senior White House staff members were asked to, and did, sign nondisclosure agreements vowing not to reveal confidential information and exposing them to damages for any violation. Some balked at first but, pressed by then-Chief of Staff Reince Priebus and the White House Counsel’s Office, ultimately complied, concluding that the agreements would likely not be enforceable in any event.”

”Moreover, said the source, this confidentiality pledge would extend not only after an aide’s White House service but also beyond the Trump presidency.“

Putin Easily Wins Fourth Term

March 18, 2018 at 3:13 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“An exit poll and early returns suggest that Vladimir Putin has easily won a fourth term, keeping him as Russia’s president for six more years,” the AP reports.

“The nationwide exit poll conducted by the All-Russia Opinion Research Center showed that Putin won 73.9% of Sunday’s presidential vote.”

Scott Pruitt Eyes Higher Office

March 18, 2018 at 3:10 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

New York Times: “In the past year, Mr. Pruitt has emerged as a hero to President Trump’s supporters for his hand in rolling back environmental rules at an agency long disliked by farmers, the fossil fuel industry and the far right. And he has occasionally shocked his employees by criticizing the very agency he heads.”

“Now, people close to Mr. Pruitt say he is using his perch as Mr. Trump’s deregulatory czar to position himself for further political prominence — starting with a run for office in his home state of Oklahoma. He is widely viewed as a future candidate for senator or governor there, and Mr. Pruitt has made it known that if the president replaces his beleaguered attorney general, Jeff Sessions, he would be ready to step into the job.”

“Behind the scenes, Mr. Pruitt has spent time with major political donors. Last year he met with Foster Friess, a Republican fund-raiser, and with investors connected to Sheldon Adelson, the party megadonor, according to meeting records obtained by The New York Times. He also met with Steven Chancellor, an Indiana coal executive and Republican fund-raiser.”

Democrats Have Many Possible 2020 Candidates

March 18, 2018 at 2:02 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Frank Bruni: “Dozens of prominent Democrats are at least flirting with running in 2020, and while it’s easy to look at them and play Goldilocks — too cold, too hot, too bald, too blond, too Wall Street, too wordy — it’s just as easy to believe. The perfect person? The party certainly lacks that. But potentially effective candidates? It’s lousy with them, though we chromosomally dyspeptic pundits prefer to shake our heads and sigh.”

“Republicans crowed about their supposed bounty in 2016 even as Donald Trump laid waste to it. Democrats bemoan their slim pickings in 2020 even though the field is positively obese. There are elders in their 70s and whippersnappers below 50; governors who can present themselves as Washington outsiders and senators who can tout their inside game; show horses and workhorses; progressives who didn’t just conveniently rechristen themselves that way and moderates who’d probably be potent in the general election if they could just survive the primaries. There are Westerners and Easterners and, in happy contrast to cycles past, more than a few women and people of color.”

“To worry that there’s no obvious winner is to ignore history. Presidents aren’t obvious until they’re sitting at the Resolute Desk (and sometimes not even then). Consider the last three.”

Quote of the Day

March 18, 2018 at 12:34 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“I hear so many Republican senators grumble about Trump’s ethics, about his name-calling. … At some point Republican enablers in the House and Senate are going to say publicly what they’ve been saying privately. And that’s when things change and we see a president back off this kind of name-calling, not telling the truth, sending out these tweets, all that.”

— Sen. Sherrod Brown (D-OH), on Meet the Press.

Graham Says Firing Mueller Would Lead to End of Trump

March 18, 2018 at 11:57 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Sen. Lindsey Graham warned President Trump not to fire special counsel Robert Mueller, Reuters reports.

Said Graham: “The only reason Mr. Mueller could ever be dismissed is for cause. I see no cause when it comes to Mr. Mueller. I pledge to the American people as a Republican, to ensure that Mr. Mueller can continue to do his job without any interference.”

He added: “As I have said before, if he tried to do that, that would be the beginning of the end of his presidency, because we’re a rule of law nation.”

Comey’s Book Already a Bestseller

March 18, 2018 at 11:48 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

James Comey’s forthcoming book, A Higher Loyalty: Truth, Lies, and Leadership, won’t be released until April 17 but it’s already at the top of Amazon’s constantly updated list of best sellers.

‘When You Are Innocent… Act Like It’

March 18, 2018 at 11:40 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Rep. Trey Gowdy (R-SC) urged President Trump and his lawyer to stop flailing at special counsel Robert Mueller’s investigation and to let the probe continue unimpeded, Politico reports.

Said Gowdy: “When you are innocent… act like it. If you’ve done nothing wrong, you should want the investigation to be as fulsome and thorough as possible.”

Sources Contradict Sessions’ Testimony on Russia

March 18, 2018 at 11:30 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Attorney General Jeff Sessions’ testimony that he opposed a proposal for President Trump’s 2016 campaign team to meet with Russians has been contradicted by three people who told Reuters they have spoken about the matter to investigators with Special Counsel Robert Mueller or congressional committees.
