Why Trump Suddenly Ousted McMaster

March 23, 2018 at 7:24 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Jonathan Swan: “The reason John Kelly and White House communications officials insisted late last week that McMaster wasn’t going anywhere for now — despite a Washington Post story saying he was done — was because the president told them to say that. And they genuinely thought he’d take some time to ease McMaster out.”

“An administration source told me that the aides thought Trump probably believed that in the moment.”

Said the source: “He’s impulsive. He makes snap decisions but they’re weird snap decisions … He publicly ruminates for six months and then says: ‘I have to do this right now.'”

How Bolton Will Be Different on Russia

March 23, 2018 at 7:17 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Politico: “In their public comments, McMaster and Bolton have presented a stark contrast in their views on Moscow’s involvement in the hacks and online trolling that roiled the 2016 presidential election. While McMaster has taken a hard-line stance in blaming Moscow for orchestrating the digital disruption campaign, Bolton has made headlines by casting doubt on Russia’s role.”

Summons Issued For Trump In Emoluments Case

March 22, 2018 at 10:41 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“A lawsuit filed by D.C. and Maryland against President Trump over his alleged business conflicts has been expanded to include Trump in his personal capacity as a businessman, which means that a summons has been sent to perhaps the most famous address in Washington: 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue,” WAMU reports.

“The attorneys general for both states argue in a lawsuit that Trump is violating the emoluments clause of the U.S. Constitution, which in part bans public officials from receiving gifts and payments from foreign governments without approval from Congress.”

Ex-Playboy Model Had 10-Month Affair with Trump

March 22, 2018 at 10:25 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Former Playboy model Karen McDougal confirmed to CNN in an interview that she had a 10-month sexual relationship with Donald Trump before he was President, saying they were together “many dozens of times.”

Said McDougal: “I can tell you we saw each other a minimum five times a month, up to bigger numbers per month.”

“McDougal described the alleged affair from 2006 to 2007 as a consensual, loving relationship, and said she did not know Trump might have seen other women at the time besides his wife — and that throughout their relationship, he did not use protection.”

McMaster Firing Upended Plan to Oust Others

March 22, 2018 at 10:23 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“President Trump’s decision to abruptly fire national security adviser H.R. McMaster surprised senior White House aides who had been preparing a single statement announcing the departure of multiple top Trump officials,” Politico reports.

“White House chief of staff John Kelly and other top aides were waiting for inspector general reports that they believed would deliver devastating verdicts on Veteran Affairs Secretary David Shulkin and Housing and Urban Development Secretary Ben Carson, who have both been accused of racking up extravagant expenses. They were also debating whether several senior White House aides, including McMaster, should go with them.”

Guccifer 2.0 Revealed as a Russian Intelligence Officer

March 22, 2018 at 10:16 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Guccifer 2.0, the ‘lone hacker’ who took credit for providing WikiLeaks with stolen emails from the Democratic National Committee, was in fact an officer of Russia’s military intelligence directorate (GRU), the Daily Beast reports.

“It’s an attribution that resulted from a fleeting but critical slip-up in GRU tradecraft.”

“That forensic determination has substantial implications for the criminal probe into potential collusion between President Donald Trump and Russia. The Daily Beast has learned that the special counsel in that investigation, Robert Mueller, has taken over the probe into Guccifer and brought the FBI agents who worked to track the persona onto his team.”

Trump Mused About Having No Chief of Staff

March 22, 2018 at 10:14 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“In the midst of a Cabinet shake-up and a possible staff upheaval, President Trump considered firing his chief of staff earlier this month and not naming a successor,” NBC News reports.

“Trump has mused to close associates about running the West Wing as he did his business empire, essentially serving as his own chief of staff… In conversations with allies outside the White House, the president envisioned a scenario in which a handful of top aides would report directly to him — bypassing the traditional gatekeeper position.”

McMaster Will Be Replaced by Bolton

March 22, 2018 at 6:26 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Lt. Gen. H. R. McMaster, the battle-tested Army officer tapped as President Trump’s national security adviser last year to stabilize a turbulent foreign policy operation, will resign and be replaced by John Bolton, a hard-line former United States ambassador to the United Nations,” the New York Times reports.

“General McMaster will retire from the military… He has been discussing his departure with President Trump for several weeks, they said, but decided to speed up his departure, in part because questions about his status were casting a shadow over his conversations with foreign officials.”

Student Suspended for Cursing at Congressional Staff

March 22, 2018 at 6:07 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

A high school student was suspended for “disrespect” after he called Rep. Mark Amodei’s (R-NV) office and told his staff to “get off their fucking asses” and pass gun-control laws, the Washington Post reports.

“Amodei has defended his staff member for reporting 17-year-old Noah Christiansen’s foul language to his principal last week, which the American Civil Liberties Union said caused Christiansen to miss two days of school and be barred from joining the student government.”

Said Amodei: “Welcome to the world where words have impact.”

Trump Legal Shake Up Clears Path for Mueller Interview

March 22, 2018 at 5:59 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“The shake-up in President Trump’s legal team is part of preparations for a potential presidential interview with special counsel Robert Mueller,” NBC News reports.

“John Dowd, the member of Trump’s legal team who most strongly opposed an interview and was leading the discussions with Mueller about one, resigned on Thursday. The move clears the path to begin preparations should an interview occur.”

Bannon Says Trump May Fire Kelly and Not Replace Him

March 22, 2018 at 5:27 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Former White House chief strategist Stephen Bannon said he believes if chief of staff John Kelly leaves the White House, President Trump will not replace him, The Hill reports.

“Bannon said that rather than hiring a new chief of staff should Kelly leave, Trump would likely opt for a more hands-on approach that would involve directly receiving reports from multiple individuals each day.”

Another Republican May Run for Cochran’s Seat

March 22, 2018 at 5:04 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Author and attorney Andy Taggart (R) said he is “very seriously considering running” for the U.S. Senate seat being vacated by Thad Cochran, the Jackson Clarion Ledger reports.

“Taggart’s statement comes a day after Gov. Phil Bryant (R) announced he will appoint Agriculture Commissioner Cindy Hyde-Smith to Cochran’s seat temporarily and support her election to the post in November. It also comes amid Bryant facing some Republican backlash over his choice.”

“Many establishment GOP leaders in Mississippi and Washington, including Taggart and White House advisers, have questioned Bryant’s choice. They fear Hyde-Smith, who served for years as a Democratic state Senator, would be vulnerable to a challenge from the right or left.”

Health Care Takes Center Stage in 2018 Campaigns

March 22, 2018 at 4:39 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Amy Walter: “There’s always something of a disconnect between what Washington, DC is obsessed about and what the rest of the country is worried about. In DC, of course, the story is Robert Mueller, Russia and White House chaos. Out in congressional races, however, Democratic candidates aren’t talking about any of those things. Instead, their primary focus is health care; specifically, their criticism of GOP attempts to repeal Obamacare. Ironically, while the passage of Obamacare cost Democrats their House majority in 2010, GOP attempts to repeal Obamacare may help Democrats flip House control in 2018.”

“While Republicans argue that Americans are going to vote with their pocketbooks this fall (thanks to a growing economy boosted by tax cuts and deregulation), Democrats seem to be betting that health care — costs and access — will be the more salient issue in 2018. In fact, as we saw in the special election in PA-18, Democrat Conor Lamb made the case that many of his constituents are going to have to use their tax cut refund to pay for escalating health care costs.”

How Stormy Daniels Is Beating Trump at His Own Game

March 22, 2018 at 2:54 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Matt Viser: “Stormy Daniels is proving that she is the master of the prolonged reveal.”

“Over the last two and a half months the adult film actress and her lawyer have rolled out a textbook negative media campaign against the master of media manipulation, with a series of tantalizing details and disclosures that has provoked a storm of salacious and damaging news coverage.”

“And the worst for President Trump, who is in the rare position of struggling to win a tabloid-style media war, is yet to come. Daniels, whose real name is Stephanie Clifford, is scheduled to appear in a 60 Minutes segment on Sunday in which she is expected to tell plenty more about her alleged affair with Trump in 2006.”

Mueller Zeroes In on Cambridge Analytica

March 22, 2018 at 2:37 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Special counsel Robert Mueller “is scrutinizing the connections between President Trump’s campaign and the data mining firm Cambridge Analytica,” the AP reports.

“Mueller’s investigators have asked former campaign officials about the Trump campaign’s data operations, particularly about how it collected and utilized voter data in battleground states.”

“The investigators have also asked some of Trump’s data team, which included analysts at the Republican National Committee, about its relationship with Cambridge Analytica.”

Tillerson Takes a Departing Swing at Trump

March 22, 2018 at 2:04 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

In a farewell speech to department staff, Secretary of State Rex Tillerson wasn’t subtle expressing his view about the way he was summarily dismissed from his job by President Trump, Marketwatch reports.

Said Tillerson: “This can be a very mean-spirited town. But you don’t have to choose to participate in that. Each of us gets to choose the person we want to be, the way we want to be treated, and the way we want to treat others.”

Judge Orders Walker to Call Special Elections

March 22, 2018 at 1:51 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Dealing a setback to Gov. Scott Walker and other Republicans, a judge ruled the governor must call special elections to fill two vacant seats in the Legislature,” the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reports.

“Walker declined to call those elections after two GOP lawmakers stepped down to join his administration in December. His plan would have left the seats vacant for more than a year.”
