Most Republicans In Denial After Special Election Loss

March 14, 2018 at 1:30 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Republicans on Wednesday struggled to explain their likely loss in the Pennsylvania special election: GOP leaders warned lawmakers that the outcome in the pro-Trump district could spell disaster in the midterms if they don’t respond forcefully, but many lawmakers dismissed the race as an anomaly and seemed to be in denial,” Politico reports.

“Most rank-and-file going in and out of the meeting downplayed the election, suggesting Republican candidate Rick Saccone was weak and Lamb was a “unicorn” who couldn’t be replicated in tight races this fall.”

Republicans Prepare for a Recount in Pennsylvania

March 14, 2018 at 1:29 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“The special congressional election in Pennsylvania appears headed to a recount, with Republicans preparing behind the scenes to cry foul after the vote count showed Democrat Conor Lamb leading Republican Rick Saccone by 627 votes,” Politico reports.

“The GOP is considering challenging the accuracy of voting machines in the district, in addition to confusion over the state’s changing congressional map later this year.”

Trump Open to Short Term DACA Deal

March 14, 2018 at 12:52 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

President Trump “is willing to entertain a temporary extension of the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program in exchange for border-wall funding in the upcoming spending bill,” the Washington Post reports.

“The move, which White House officials communicated to Republican congressional leaders this week, represents a stunning shift for Trump, who has insisted for months on including strict limits on legal immigration as part of any deal to protect DACA recipients. A deal could largely remove immigration from the national agenda until after the 2020 election.”

Republicans Brace for More Retirements

March 14, 2018 at 10:00 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

First Read: “Finally, last night’s result could very well scare off a handful of GOP incumbents who are on the fence about running in 2018. The good news for Republicans is that many filing deadlines have already passed. The bad news is that one or two more GOP retirements in semi-competitive districts could end up proving decisive in November’s race for control of Congress. That’s maybe why Republicans have been spinning the results so much — essentially saying, ‘Hey, last night wasn’t THAT bad’ — so they can prevent more retirements.”

Pruitt Spent $43K on Soundproof Phone Booth

March 14, 2018 at 9:35 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Washington Post: “In total, the EPA appears to have spent more than $18,000 on the prep work, readying the space for a $25,000 soundproof booth that has brought Pruitt a wave of criticism and official scrutiny. The total cost for the project now appears to be closer to $43,000.”

Fox News Suddenly Focuses on Women as Sex Offenders

March 14, 2018 at 9:06 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

New York Times: “Instances of female teachers sexually abusing male students are rare. But stories on the subject have lately taken up a lot of space at FoxNews.com.”

“Through the first half of 2017, the site posted fewer than 20 stories on women accused of sex offenses. The new focus started on June 30, when FoxNews.com published an article on ‘the apparently increasing frequency of female teachers having sex with their young male students.’ Over the next six months the site posted some 98 articles on instances of sexual abuse allegedly committed by women, most of them teachers.”

Here’s Why Republicans Should Be Terrified

Conor Lamb’s (D) win in Pennsylvania’s 18th congressional district special election was a stinging rebuke of President Trump from deep inside red America. It came in a district that overwhelmingly supported him in 2016 and that is seen as so strongly Republican that the Democrats did not even field a candidate in the last two cycles.

Lamb Wins Special Election In Pennsylvania

March 14, 2018 at 7:19 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Conor Lamb (D) is the apparent winner over Rick Saccone (R) in Tuesday’s special election in Pennsylvania’s 18th Congressional District, according to an NBC News projection.

Mike Allen: “Regardless of the ultimate winner, it was a humiliating and sobering night for the GOP. This a district President Trump won by 20 points. The Democratic energy and Republican depression signal a brutal midterm season and the increasingly likely return of Speaker Pelosi.”

Rick Klein: “As Republicans pick up the pieces – and ponder the prospect of spending more money on Pennsylvania’s 18th Congressional District if Rick Saccone wants a recount – they will know well that there are easily 100 House districts that are likely to be more competitive than Pennsylvania’s special election had any right to be.”

Koch Network Steps Up Spending In Missouri, Indiana

March 14, 2018 at 7:15 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“The political network backed by billionaires Charles and David Koch is planning to step up its advertising to unseat Democratic Senators Claire McCaskill of Missouri and Joe Donnelly of Indiana, who are seen as vulnerable because they’re from states President Trump won in 2016,” Bloomberg reports.

“The Koch-affiliated group Americans for Prosperity says it will run almost $4 million in television and online ads targeted at the two lawmakers. The spending follows a similar $4 million ad buy announced by the group in February targeting them.”

Trump Tires of His Cabinet

March 14, 2018 at 7:13 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Associated Press: “Trump’s esteem for the Cabinet has faded in recent months… He also told confidants that he was in the midst of making changes to improve personnel and, according to one person who spoke with him, ‘get rid of the dead weight’ — which could put a number of embattled Cabinet secretaries on notice.”

Emails Show Carson Picked $31K Dining Room Set

March 14, 2018 at 7:06 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Newly released emails cast doubt on claims by Secretary Ben Carson and his spokesman that he had little or no involvement in the purchase of a $31,000 furniture set for his Department of Housing and Urban Development dining room,” CNN reports.

“Emails show Carson and his wife selected the furniture themselves.”

House Russia Probe Dissolves Into Fight Over Transcripts

March 14, 2018 at 7:02 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Bloomberg: “Now that Republicans have terminated the House Intelligence Committee’s Russia probe, the biggest outstanding question is whether the public will ever see transcripts from dozens of its closed-door witnesses.”

“Republicans on the Intelligence panel are reversing their earlier plans to release those transcripts, while Democrats say they plan to attach the documents to their final report.”

Special Election Results

March 13, 2018 at 7:30 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Barring a major tabulation error, Dave Wasserman projects that Conor Lamb (D) has defeated Rick Saccone (R) in Pennsylvania’s 18th congressional district.

Absentee ballots are being counted tonight, but it’s not likely that Saccone can make up his deficit in the remaining ballots. Saccone’s best path at this point is through a recount.

That said, the Associated Press is not yet calling the race.

Trump May Replace Shulkin with Perry

March 13, 2018 at 5:38 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“President Trump, fresh off replacing his secretary of state and C.I.A. director, is considering firing his secretary of veterans affairs and installing Energy Secretary Rick Perry in the post,” the New York Times reports.

“Mr. Trump did not make a formal offer to Mr. Perry when the two men met on Monday. But the people said the president has grown impatient with the department’s current secretary, David Shulkin, and may want to replace him with someone already in his cabinet.”

CNN: “Trump and his senior aides are frustrated with Shulkin because they believe he has undermined the White House on several occasions and is unwilling to work with other members of his agency who were appointed by the Trump administration.”

Stormy Daniels Discussed Affair with Trump in 2007

March 13, 2018 at 5:26 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Stormy Daniels discussed her alleged affair with Donald Trump during a May 2007 radio appearance, a well-known Florida radio personality told his listeners, CNN reports.

“Bubba the Love Sponge Clem, known as Todd Clem before he legally changed his name in 1999, played portions of the interview on his radio show Friday and Monday, in which Daniels was asked to write down the names of famous men she had slept with. Clem says the first name on that list was Donald Trump. Although neither Daniels nor the host says Trump’s name in the 2007 audio, she can be heard describing key details that match the description of her alleged affair with Trump.”
