Assemblywoman Accused of Sexual Misconduct

February 9, 2018 at 8:27 am EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

California Assemblywoman Cristina Garcia (D),” chair of the Legislative Women’s Caucus who has been at the forefront of the movement against sexual harassment in the state Capitol, has herself become the subject of allegations of sexual misconduct,” the Los Angeles Times reports.

“Politico reported Thursday that two men said Garcia made improper advances toward them. One, a former legislative staffer, said Garcia groped his back and buttocks and attempted to grab his crotch during a legislative softball game in 2014.”

Through Steve Bannon’s Eyes

February 9, 2018 at 8:15 am EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Michael Lewis writes about watching the State of the Union address with Steve Bannon:

Words are now coming out of Trump’s mouth but Bannon seems to be only half listening. He’s got a pair of phones out and is scrolling through the speech, the text of which someone has just sent him. As he reads his face flushes. “They have path to citizenship in here,” he says, matter-of- factly. “It’s terrible. It’s a betrayal.”

He leaves the room for several minutes, perhaps to compose himself. When he returns he takes real notice of the remarkable scene that is unfolding. At even the most anodyne applause lines the Democrats remain seated. Bannon seems to view the Democrats less as the opposition party than figures of fun. “The Democrats don’t matter,” he had said to me over our lunch. “The real opposition is the media. And the way to deal with them is to flood the zone with shit.” But he stares at the seated Democrats with genuine wonder. “Look at this,” he says. “Even Reagan — I’ve never seen a State of the Union like this.”

“Tell me when you think Trump really cares about what he is saying,” I say.

Bannon laughs, but not a happy laugh. “I will.”

Bonus Quote of the Day

“God no, never. In a million years, never.”

— Former White House aide Omarosa Manigault, quoted by the Washington Post on Celebrity Big Brother, on whether she would vote to re-elect Donald Trump.

The GOP Is the Party of Massive Budget Deficits

February 9, 2018 at 7:33 am EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Associated Press: “Administration officials have downplayed the risk of simultaneously slashing taxes and boosting spending, arguing that the result will be faster growth that will then shrink the debt. But the higher deficits would come just as the Federal Reserve is on course to continue — and perhaps accelerate — the pace of its short-term rate hikes. The Fed’s rate increases will likely lead, in time, to higher borrowing rates for consumers and businesses and likely slow economic growth.”

“The market’s plunge over the past week was initially ignited by fears of higher inflation and interest rates. But investors have also had to consider a new threat: A two-year government funding deal that would add about $300 billion to budget deficits from higher spending. The Fed might have to respond by raising rates more aggressively to counter the stimulative effect of the spending increases.”

John Kelly Crisis Engulfs the White House

February 9, 2018 at 7:28 am EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Jonathan Swan: “The Rob Porter crisis has become a John Kelly crisis, and it has now totally engulfed the West Wing. White House staff — especially Porter’s close friendship circle —are shell-shocked by the allegations of domestic abuse by the departing aide. President Trump is enraged about the situation, though he still feels that it hasn’t touched him.”

“Trump’s affection for his chief of staff is gone, and Kelly has lost the goodwill of much of his staff. The president is mulling potential replacements, though aides doubt he has it in him to actually fire the retired general.”

Quote of the Day

February 9, 2018 at 7:20 am EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“The reason I’m here tonight is to put people on the spot. I want people to feel uncomfortable. I want them to have to answer people at home who said, ‘How come you were against President Obama’s deficits and then how come you’re for Republican deficits?'”

— Sen. Rand Paul (R-KY), quoted by the New York Times.

Congress Passes Deal to Reopen the Federal Government

February 9, 2018 at 5:46 am EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“The House of Representatives approved a major budget deal early Friday morning, ending a brief government shutdown overnight and sending the measure to the President for his signature,” CNN reports.

“The House vote was 240-186. The GOP-controlled chamber needed help from House Democrats to clear the bill. The Senate approved the measure earlier on Friday morning.”

Congress Fails to Avert Another Shutdown

February 8, 2018 at 11:12 pm EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“A government shutdown will begin at midnight. The Senate has recessed until 12:01 a.m. without passing a spending bill,” the Washington Post reports.

“The Senate planned to vote early Friday morning on a spending bill that would pour billions of dollars into the military and domestic programs while keeping the government operating.”

“The fate of the bill was uncertain in the House, where conservatives balked at adding billions to the nation’s debt and liberals demanded action on protecting young undocumented immigrants from deportation.”

White House Knew of Abuse Allegations for Months

February 8, 2018 at 11:04 pm EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“White House Counsel Donald McGahn knew one year ago that Staff Secretary Rob Porter’s ex-wives accused him of domestic violence, but allowed him to serve as an influential gatekeeper and aide to President Trump,” the Washington Post reports.

“Chief of Staff John F. Kelly learned in September about the allegations of spousal abuse and that they were delaying Porter’s security clearance amid an ongoing FBI investigation. But Kelly handed Porter more responsibilities to control the flow of information to the president.”

Trump Called Priebus to Complain About Kelly

February 8, 2018 at 10:52 pm EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Among the many people agitated this week over John F. Kelly, the White House chief of staff, was President Trump. And among the people the president called to express dissatisfaction, according to those close to him, was none other than Reince Priebus, the previous chief of staff, who also irritated Mr. Trump,” the New York Times reports.

“The idea that the president would confide grievances over Mr. Kelly with the person he pushed out to hire Mr. Kelly is yet another indication of how upside-down Mr. Trump’s world can be. In the West Wing, various characters fall in and out of favor with such rapidity that it is never entirely clear who has the president’s ear.”

Oregon Lawmaker Resigns Amid Groping Allegations

February 8, 2018 at 9:28 pm EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Oregon state Sen. Jeff Kruse (R) said that he was resigning after an investigation “determined he had harassed women in the Capitol building with prolonged hugging, groping and other unwelcome physical contact,” the AP reports.

Trump Aides Blamed Lewandowski for Porter ‘Smear’

February 8, 2018 at 9:07 pm EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

White House officials told Sen. Orrin Hatch’s (R-UT) office that the story that White House staff secretary Rob Porter had abused his two ex-wives was the product of a “smear campaign” being orchestrated against Porter by his political enemies, the Daily Beast reports.

“Among those they pinpointed was former Trump campaign manager (and current outside adviser to the president) Corey Lewandowski… Multiple White House staffers told Hatch himself that Lewandowski ‘was digging into Rob’s previous marriages,’ recalled one source, who said Porter himself was among the officials who fingered Lewandowski.”

[alert type=”general” dismiss=”no”]The backstory: Porter is currently romantically-involved with White House communications director Hope Hicks, who previously dated Lewandowski.[/alert]

Shutdown Likely as Paul Prevents Budget Vote

February 8, 2018 at 8:01 pm EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“The federal government on Thursday night slid toward at least a brief shutdown as a single Republican senator, Rand Paul of Kentucky, held off a vote on a far-reaching budget deal that would stave it off,” the New York Times reports.

“Angered at the huge spending increases at the center of the deal, Mr. Paul delayed the vote for hours with a demand to hold a vote on an amendment.”

Washington Post: White House tells agencies to prepare for shutdown as budget bill stalls.

‘Like Living Inside a Parody’

February 8, 2018 at 7:59 pm EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Chuck Todd has had enough:

It’s like we’re living inside a parody from three years ago – “What would happen if Donald Trump became president? Omarosa would probably work in the West Wing! And then she’d leave to go on Big Brother to dish about Administration secrets! Ha ha!” …Oh, wait. That actually happened on Big Brother Celebrity Edition, airing tonight…

Let’s leave aside the fact that Omarosa made those comments on a show named after George Orwell’s dystopian surveillance state. Folks, we’re not even surprised by this stuff anymore. Just think of all we’ve seen — or endured — in the last 13 months of this presidency. The twitter battles with a rival nuclear power, members of his own party, the Gold Star widow, the Justice Department, mayors, senators, governors, our allies, and many in between…

All of this is the legacy of our country’s first reality TV star president. It is all personal and it is all about the show… it is a hell of a show. One for the ages. But it is no laughing matter. And is it anyway to run a country?

FBI Surveillance May Have Picked Up Bannon

February 8, 2018 at 7:59 pm EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“The FBI was monitoring Carter Page when the former Trump campaign adviser says he spoke with Trump adviser Steve Bannon about Russia in January 2017, raising the strong possibility that the FBI intercepted a conversation between the two men,” Politico reports.

‘They Protect Abusers’

White House Gives Phones to Senior Staff for Politics

February 8, 2018 at 5:05 pm EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“The White House will allow as many as a dozen senior advisers to receive additional cell phones so that they can contact the RNC regarding the fall midterm elections,” The Hill reports.

“A White House official, who was granted anonymity to describe the plan, said the arrangement was made in order to allow certain senior advisers to ‘conduct political activity during core working hours,’ when personal devices are not permitted inside working areas of the White House.”

Suddenly Deficits Don’t Matter Again

February 8, 2018 at 4:59 pm EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Jonathan Chait: “During the Obama era, Democrats frequently believed, but only rarely uttered aloud in official forums, that the Republican Party was engaged in economic sabotage. Not a coldly conscious plot, exactly. But it seemed just a little too convenient that the party had reversed its fiscal ideology at precisely the time when doing so would damage Democrats and thereby smooth the GOP’s return to power.”

“Now that Republicans have reversed their position once again, also in a way that happens to redound to their political benefit, the answer seems a little more clear. Republicans have used their control of government to virtually double the budget deficit, which had been hovering around half a trillion dollars per year, and will now likely run well over $1 trillion — during the peak of an economic expansion. There is no economic rationale for this behavior. Their policy is simply to support fiscal contraction under Democratic presidents and fiscal expansion under Republican ones. Cynicism is the only basis to explain their behavior.”
