Trump Boasted About His Physical Exam to Lawmakers

February 2, 2018 at 7:12 am EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

After the press was escorted out of the conference room, Breitbart News obtained an audio recording of the rest of President Trump’s speech to Republican members of Congress “as he delighted the crowd by discussing the details of his cognitive exam at Walter Reed Military Hospital. He boasted that he got a ‘30-for-30’ score… He said that in the beginning of the test, he had to identify sketches of animals, which was pretty easy.”

“Later in the test, he explained, he had to repeat disassociated words as the test administrators asked him to repeat them at different points in the test: ‘Let me tell you, those last ten questions are hard,’ he said, and added. ‘There aren’t a lot of people that can do that.'”

“Trump said he was up to nine minutes on the treadmill for his physical, even though he was only asked to do five before the doctor asked him if he wanted to keep going. ‘I said, “What do I have to prove?”’ he said. ‘I’m telling you, I could have gone much longer.’”

Most Top Jobs at State Department Are Vacant

February 2, 2018 at 7:11 am EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Bloomberg: “With Tom Shannon’s departure, seven of the top nine jobs at the department will be empty. Those vacant posts include positions overseeing the agency’s role in U.S. trade policy, stopping the spread of nuclear weapons, refugee issues and efforts to counter human trafficking.”

Quote of the Day

February 2, 2018 at 7:05 am EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“All should appreciate the FBI speaking up. I wish more of our leaders would. But take heart: American history shows that, in the long run, weasels and liars never hold the field, so long as good people stand up. Not a lot of schools or streets named for Joe McCarthy.”

— Former FBI Director James Comey, on Twitter.

FBI Memo Firestorm Engulfs GOP Retreat

February 2, 2018 at 7:03 am EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Politico: “Republican lawmakers often complain when President Trump’s controversial comments suck up the headlines and undercut their messaging. But this week, they tripped over their own feet. The firestorm over whether to release a classified, GOP-crafted memo alleging FBI misconduct has totally drowned out the House-Senate GOP retreat here in West Virginia. Republicans wanted to tout their tax bill and advocate for their 2018 priorities, from infrastructure to military spending.”

“But the controversial document of their own making seemed to be the only thing reporters wanted to talk about. The rank and file and leadership alike were peppered with questions about the memo drafted by aides to House Intelligence Chairman Devin Nunes.”

McConnell Urges Bryant to Consider Senate Seat

February 1, 2018 at 9:41 pm EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) has asked Mississippi Gov. Phil Bryant (R) to consider appointing himself to the Senate if ailing Sen. Thad Cochran (R-MS) resigns from office, the Washington Post reports.

“President Trump, a supporter of Bryant, backs the plan, according to a person familiar with the situation, though there are several other options that both McConnell and Trump have discussed if Bryant declines.”

Lawmaker Played Video Game During Trump Speech

February 1, 2018 at 9:35 pm EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Rep. Brenda Lawrence (D-MI) was caught by Fox News playing Candy Crush on her phone during the State of the Union address.

GOP Lawmaker Disputes Trump’s Claim of Unity

February 1, 2018 at 9:02 pm EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Retiring Rep. Charlie Dent (R-PA) likened the Republican party’s efforts to avoid discussing difficult issues to “a dysfunctional family. Dad’s drunk again but we don’t talk about it,” Politico reports.

Said Dent: “DACA, debt ceiling, budget, agreement, omnibus? There aren’t 218 votes on those. Are we united on issues? No. We never are. It’s not going to change now.”

Hannity Advising Trump on Nunes Memo

February 1, 2018 at 7:52 pm EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Daily Beast: “According to three sources with knowledge of their conversations, Trump has been in regular contact with Hannity over the phone in recent weeks, as the Fox News primetime star and Trump ally has encouraged the prompt release of a controversial four page memo crafted by Republicans on the House Intelligence Committee. Hannity has gone to the wall to push for the public release of the memo, which the Intelligence Committee and its chairman, Rep. Devin Nunes (R-CA), authorized this week in a party-line vote despite the classified information therein.”

“Sources say Hannity’s persistent advocacy reinforced Trump’s already growing determination to get that memo into the public realm—despite huge potential fallout within the law enforcement and intelligence arms of his own administration.”

GOP Nominee Spent $430K from Expense Account

February 1, 2018 at 7:50 pm EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Expense records show that Rick Saccone (R), who is running in the upcoming Pennsylvania special election for Congress, spent $435,172 in taxpayer money using his expense account in his first seven years as a state lawmaker, The Intercept reports.

“Pennsylvania provides state lawmakers with generous salaries and expense policies, allowing them to bill the government for activities they deem as necessary for their job… But Saccone’s profligate use of the legislative expense account may come as a surprise. He was elected in 2010 during the tea party wave on a pledge to cut government spending.”

The Education of Anthony Scaramucci

February 1, 2018 at 7:24 pm EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Anthony Scaramucci gave a must-read interview to Vanity Fair in which he elaborated about his 10 days working in the Trump White House.

Said Scaramucci: “I want you to imagine the worst person that you’ve met on Wall Street, the most ruthless and the most diabolical. That’s the best person in Washington. That’s the Eagle Scout of Washington.”

On how White House chief of staff Reince Priebus — who he called “Rancid Penis” — promise to help him land a job: “He did say this because he’s a Washingtonian. That’s what they do to you, they say, ‘golly gee’ to your face and they act like Richie Cunningham to your face. They’re Richie Cunningham and they’re Opie from The Andy Griffith Show, but they’re the fucking Sith Lord behind your back. They’re hitting you with a lightsaber behind your back.”

On Steve Bannon: “I helped Bannon through the three months that he was on the campaign, and we had a good relationship. But Bannon turns on me, because Bannon is ultimately railing against the swamp, but he’s actually a cock of the swamp. He’s the creature from the Black Lagoon, Bannon. He acts more swamp-like than any person that’s ever become a Washingtonian. So for all of his railing on the swamp, he is literally the pig in George Orwell’s Animal Farm that stands on his two legs the minute he gets power.”

His final takeaway: “I learned that the swamp is probably a gold-plated cesspool with no drain. You understand what I’m saying? You can’t drain the fucking thing. It’s a gold-plated cesspool, and you got cesspool operators in there that know how to slow down disruptors like Donald Trump.”

Florida Rules for Felons’ Voting Rights Struck Down

February 1, 2018 at 7:18 pm EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

A federal judge ruled that the state of Florida “routinely violates the constitutional rights of its citizens by permanently revoking the ‘fundamental right’ to vote for anyone convicted of a felony,” the Tampa Bay Times reports.

U.S. District Judge Mark Walker said the Florida “scheme” unfairly relies on the personal support of the governor for citizens to regain the right to vote.

Gates’ Lawyers Withdraw from Case

February 1, 2018 at 5:32 pm EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

The lawyers for former Trump aide Rick Gates, who was indicted alongside Paul Manafort, have asked for permission to withdraw from the case “effective immediately,” USA Today reports.

The reasons aren’t stated in the public filing but are included in an exhibit “which is the subject of a motion to be filed under seal.”

[alert type=”general” dismiss=”no”]This suggests Gates may have flipped and is now cooperating with the special counsel. If true, that’s very bad news for Manafort.[/alert]

Extra Bonus Quote of the Day

February 1, 2018 at 5:26 pm EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“That was one of the greatest years in the history of politics. I’ve kept one promise after another and we’re just getting started… Now we’ve fulfilled far more promises than we promised… I call it promises plus.”

— President Trump, quoted by Axios, speaking to Republican lawmakers.

Pawlenty Signals Interest in Governor’s Race

February 1, 2018 at 4:58 pm EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Former Minnesota Gov. Tim Pawlenty (R) is actively considering a political comeback, Minnesota Public Radio reports.

“Pawlenty is weighing a campaign for his old job and is convening a group of Republican donors and political movers this month as he seeks advice about entering a governor’s race without a clear favorite.”

Will the Nunes Memo Prove Underwhelming?

February 1, 2018 at 3:56 pm EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Jonathan Swan: “Inside the Trump administration, sources who’ve been briefed on the Nunes memo expect it will be underwhelming and not the ‘slam dunk’ document it’s been hyped up to be.”

“Trump still wants to release the memo. But there are a number of people in the White House who are fairly underwhelmed, and there’s internal anxiety about whether it’s worth angering the FBI director and intelligence community by releasing this information.”

Republicans Finally Give Up on Obamacare Repeal

February 1, 2018 at 3:35 pm EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Politico: “Though the GOP still controls both chambers of Congress and maintains the ability to jam through a repeal-and-replace bill via a simple majority, there are no discussions of doing so here at House and Senate Republicans’ joint retreat at The Greenbrier resort. Republicans doubt they can even pass a budget providing for the powerful party-line ‘reconciliation’ procedure used to pass tax reform last year, much less take on the politically perilous task of rewriting health care laws in an election year.”

“Republicans’ decision to abstain from another attempt at gutting Barack Obama’s health law — at least this year — goes back on a pledge the party has made to voters since 2010. And it underscores how Republicans overpromised in their ability to reform the nation’s health care and never fully recognized how divided the party is over key Obamacare planks like protecting pre-existing conditions and preserving the law’s Medicaid expansion.”

The Brink

February 1, 2018 at 3:25 pm EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Out this summer: The Brink: President Reagan and the Nuclear War Scare of 1983 by Marc Ambinder.

“The incredible story of the 1983 war game that triggered a tense, brittle period of nuclear brinkmanship between the United States and the former Soviet Union.”

Trump Will Allow Release of Memo

February 1, 2018 at 3:01 pm EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

President Trump “cleared the way for the release of a secret memo written by Republican congressional staffers and said to accuse federal law enforcement officials of abusing their surveillance authorities,” the New York Times reports.

“The president’s decision came despite a growing chorus of warnings from national security officials who say that releasing the document would jeopardize sensitive government information, including how intelligence is gathered, and from Democrats who say it is politically motivated and distorts the actions of the Justice Department and the F.B.I. by omitting crucial context.”
