There’s No Way Out

January 12, 2018 at 12:51 pm EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

David Graham: “Here is the paradox: Everyone, from the president to his staff to the Congress to the pundits to the people, knows that the current situation is a disaster, and yet there is no apparent way to end the situation.”

“That means until at least the end of 2020, the situation will remain much as it is, with a president widely acknowledged to be dysfunctional and no way to change that. It is as though the United States is stumbling, never quite falling on its face but never fully righting itself, either, caught perpetually mid-stumble. The only certainty is more weeks like this one. There is no exit.”

Ambassador to Panama Quits Over Trump

January 12, 2018 at 12:41 pm EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

U.S. Ambassador to Panama John Feeley has resigned, telling the State Department he no longer feels able to serve President Trump, the Telegraph reports.

Said Feeley: “As a junior foreign service officer, I signed an oath to serve faithfully the president and his administration in an apolitical fashion, even when I might not agree with certain policies. My instructors made clear that if I believed I could not do that, I would be honor bound to resign. That time has come.”

Russian Women Flock to the U.S. to Give Birth

January 12, 2018 at 12:08 pm EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“A growing number of pregnant Russian women have been traveling to Miami to give birth, with the wealthier ones buying birth tourism packages and those of more modest means putting together DIY packages. Giving birth in the U.S., and Miami in particular, is a status symbol in Moscow, NBC News reports, and the big draw is birthright citizenship. All children born in the U.S. are U.S. citizens.”

“The child gets a lifelong right to live and work and collect benefits in the U.S. And when they turn 21 they can sponsor their parents’ application for an American green card.”

Four States to Watch In 2018

January 12, 2018 at 11:46 am EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

NBC News has identified  the four most important states to watch in 2018:

Arizona: Competitive Senate contest that could decide control of the chamber; emerging presidential battleground state; a couple of competitive House races (AZ-1, AZ-2); large Latino population.

Florida: Competitive gubernatorial race (both in the primaries and general) and whoever wins could be a national star; likely competitive Senate race; huge 2020 battleground; and a handful of must-watch House races (FL-27, FL-26, FL-18).

Ohio: Competitive gubernatorial race (both in the primaries and general) and whoever wins could be a national star; likely competitive Senate; huge 2020 battleground.

California: As many as NINE competitive House races (CA-7, CA-39, CA-49, CA-25, CA-48, CA-10, CA-45, CA-21, CA-50). If Democrats win six or more of these districts, they’re likely going to win back control of the House.

Is Trump Laundering Money thru Condo Sales?

January 12, 2018 at 10:31 am EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“More than one-fifth of Donald Trump’s U.S. condominiums have been purchased since the 1980s in secretive, all-cash transactions that enable buyers to avoid legal scrutiny by shielding their finances and identities,” BuzzFeed News reports.

“Records show that more than 1,300 Trump condominiums were bought not by people but by shell companies, and that the purchases were made without a mortgage, avoiding inquiries from lenders.”

“Those two characteristics signal that a buyer may be laundering money, the Treasury Department has said in a series of statements since 2016.”

Administration Vacancies Pile Up

January 12, 2018 at 10:26 am EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

James Hohmann: “The White House likes to blame Congress for dragging its feet, but that’s only part of the story: As of this morning, there is no pending nominee for 245 of the 626 jobs we’re tracking. Among them: deputy secretary at Treasury and Commerce, director of the Census, director of ATF, director of the Office on Violence Against Women at Justice and commissioner of the Social Security Administration.”

“Many of these jobs have ‘acting’ directors, but these people aren’t fully empowered and cannot indefinitely stay in these roles without being confirmed by the Senate because of laws related to vacancies. The lack of permanence creates uncertainty and makes strategic planning difficult. It also makes it harder to manage career staff, who are less likely to follow orders they disagree with when they realize that their boss is a short-timer.”

Brooks Column Did Not Age Well

January 12, 2018 at 10:22 am EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Jonathan Chait: “Four days ago, David Brooks broke the news in the New York Times that President Trump is actually a sober-minded and competent public servant.”

Wrote Brooks: “People who go into the White House to have a meeting with President Trump usually leave pleasantly surprised. They find that Trump is not the raving madman they expected from his tweetstorms or the media coverage. They generally say that he is affable, if repetitive. He runs a normal, good meeting and seems well-informed enough to get by.”

“It is safe to say that this column has not aged well in the short time since its publication.”

Durbin Says Trump Is Lying

January 12, 2018 at 9:54 am EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Sen. Dick Durbin (D-IL), who was in the Oval Office meeting with President Trump on Thursday, told reporters today that media reports surrounding Trump’s “shithole countries” comments yesterday were accurate, according to Axios.

Said Durbin: “The president started tweeting this morning, denying that he used those words. It is not true. He said these hate-filled things, and he said them repeatedly… I cannot believe that in the history of the White House — in that Oval Office — any president has spoken the words that I personally heard our president speak yesterday.”

Trump Cancels London Trip

January 12, 2018 at 7:09 am EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

President Trump said he has “called off a planned ceremonial visit to Britain because he didn’t want to be associated with what he called a bad real estate deal in which the U.S. Embassy is being relocated from central London to ‘an off location,'” the Washington Post reports.

In a tweet, Trump “implicitly rejected reports that the trip — never announced but widely assumed to be in February — was being scrapped over concerns that the U.S. leader would be met with widespread protests.”

Said Trump: “Reason I canceled my trip to London is that I am not a big fan of the Obama Administration having sold perhaps the best located and finest embassy in London for ‘peanuts,’ only to build a new one in an off location for 1.2 billion dollars. Bad deal. Wanted me to cut ribbon — NO.”

Trump-Branded Condo Tower Sues to Erase His Name

January 12, 2018 at 7:06 am EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“There was a time when brassy letters spelling ‘Trump’ had money-making allure. But now the board of a 376-unit luxury condominium tower on Manhattan’s West Side is asking a court to declare that it has the right to yank President Trump’s name off the building if enough residents decide they don’t like his politics,” the AP reports.

Lewandowski to Testify Before House Intelligence

January 12, 2018 at 7:04 am EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Corey Lewandowski is scheduled to take questions next week from congressional investigators looking into possible collusion between the Trump campaign and the Kremlin,” the Daily Beast reports.

“Lewandowski is one of several witnesses the House intelligence committee plans to interview as part of its Trump-Russia investigation. Reached for comment, Lewandowski indicated he will take questions, rather than pleading the fifth as other witnesses have done.”
