Trump’s Accomplishments Add Up

October 12, 2018 at 3:23 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Andrew Sullivan: “As I’ve noted before, Trump’s record as a force of destruction is profound, whether it be the sabotage of Obamacare, the devastation of democratic norms, or the rattling of NATO. But as the months tick by, there’s a decent case that Trump’s proactive accomplishments are beginning to add up as well: a huge tax cut, two Supreme Court justices, wholesale deregulation, renegotiation of NAFTA, isolation of Iran, and a broader reboot of bilateral nationalism on the world stage.”

“But I’m not talking merely about policy — he has also shifted the entire polity more decisively toward the authoritarian style of government. In this respect, yes, the Trump administration has indeed accomplished much more than many of us want to believe.”

Trump Weighs New Family Separation Effort at Border

October 12, 2018 at 2:58 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“The White House is actively considering plans that could again separate parents and children at the U.S.-Mexico border, hoping to reverse soaring numbers of families attempting to cross illegally into the United States,” the Washington Post reports.

“One option under consideration is for the government to detain asylum-seeking families together for up to 20 days, then give parents a choice: Stay in family detention with your child for months or years as your immigration case proceeds, or allow children to be taken to a government shelter so other relatives or guardians can seek custody.”

Democrats Have an Online Fundraising Machine

October 12, 2018 at 2:20 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Dallas Morning News: “ActBlue, the online Democratic fund-raising platform, makes it easier than ever for candidates to collect small sums from many people, and to prompt supporters for recurring donations. O’Rourke has brought in at least $25 million that way this year, and based on the latest tally, likely far more.”

Playbook: “Republicans have nothing like ActBlue, and it’s bludgeoning candidates across the country.”

Your Personal Data Is Already for Sale

A new report says a member of Elon Musk's DOGE task force may have taken sensitive Social Security data to a private-sector job. Troubling — but data brokers already collect and sell your social security number, birth date, home address and more to anyone willing to pay.

You can’t stop data brokers — but you can make them delete your information.

Incogni does the work for you — contacting brokers and demanding removal of your personal data, including from hard-to-clean People Search sites.

It’s a simple way to reduce identity-theft risk, cut spam calls and keep sensitive financial and health data private.

Kavanaugh Is a Net Negative for GOP In Midterms

October 12, 2018 at 1:51 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

A new Washington Post/ABC News poll finds that slightly more American voters say the debate over Brett Kavanaugh’s nomination to the Supreme Court makes them more inclined to support Democrats for Congress than Republicans, 33% to 27% with another 39% say it makes no difference.

Women say the episode draws them toward Democrats over Republicans by a 16-point margin, 40% to 24%, while men are more evenly split, 25% to 30%.

Wagner Says He’ll ‘Stomp’ on Wolf’s Face with Golf Spikes

October 12, 2018 at 1:40 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Pennsylvania gubernatorial candidate Scott Wagner (R) threatened his opponent, incumbent Gov. Tom Wolf (D) in a Facebook Live video criticizing the negative ads against him, CBS News reports.

Said Wagner: “Governor Wolf, let me tell you, between now and November 6th you’d better put a catcher’s mask on your face, because I’m going to stomp all over your face with golf spikes. I’m going to win this for the state of Pennsylvania, and we’re throwing you out of office.”

Possible Attorney General Pick Talked of Cutting Mueller

October 12, 2018 at 1:01 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“President Trump declined Thursday to deny that he was eyeing Matthew Whitaker as a replacement for Attorney General Jeff Sessions. And suddenly, Whitaker’s past skepticism of Russia investigation has taken on new significance,” the Washington Post reports.

“Appearing on CNN in July 2017 — before he was in his current position as Sessions’s chief of staff — Whitaker mused about a scenario in which Trump might fire Sessions and replace him with temporary attorney general. He noted that federal regulations still gave the attorney general power over the budget for a special counsel. That temporary replacement, he then said, could move to choke off Mueller’s funding.”

Democrats’ Chance of Taking the Senate Fading

October 12, 2018 at 12:58 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Stuart Rothenberg: “The Democrats’ chances of netting at least two Senate seats always seemed like a long shot. But a month ago, the stars looked to be aligning for Democrats. Today, those stars tell a different story.”

“With Republican challenger Kevin Cramer opening up a clear margin over incumbent Heidi Heitkamp, the North Dakota Senate race looks all but over now, according to multiple insiders. That means Democrats will need to swipe at least three GOP seats to take back the Senate — an outcome that currently appears somewhere between unlikely and impossible.”

FiveThirtyEight gives Democrats a 19% chance to take control of the Senate.

Sherrod Brown Sets Ohio Fundraising Record

October 12, 2018 at 12:22 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Sen. Sherrod Brown (D-OH) has raised $27.1 million for his re-election campaign, an Ohio record, the Dayton Daily News reports.

That total eclipses Sen. Rob Portman’s historic $25.8 million haul in 2016.

Candidate Quits After Comments on Shooting Survivors

October 12, 2018 at 11:06 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Steven Baleshiski (R), a legislative candidate in Connecticut who made harsh comments about Parkland High shooting victims, quit his race after losing town committee backing, the Hartford Courant reports.

Said Baleshiski: “I’m not supposed to speak ill of David Hogg because he is a ‘survivor.’ Apparently if you survive horrific events, that makes the stupidity spewing out of your mouth above reproach. I disagree. Hogg can burn in hell, I don’t care what he survived. Survivors who wage war on my country are my enemies.”

Republicans hope to find a new candidate.

Trump Won’t Pick Daughter as U.N. Envoy

October 12, 2018 at 10:39 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

President Trump signaled that he will not nominate his daughter, Ivanka Trump, to be the new U.S. ambassador to the United Nations.

Parties Motivated by Completely Different Issues

October 12, 2018 at 10:35 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

A new Politico/Harvard poll finds that more than half of Democrats likely to vote in House races rank health care as “extremely important” in determining their vote, the new survey found. That’s more than any other factor in an election cycle that Democratic candidates have cast as a referendum on Republican attempts to dismantle the Affordable Care Act.

Yet the focus on health care appears confined to the Democratic side of the aisle. Republican respondents are primarily influenced by terrorism, jobs and gun policy — a sign of deepening partisan divisions in the Trump era.

New Forecast Sees Democrats Winning 229 House Seats

October 12, 2018 at 10:31 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Harry Enten: “My best estimate gives the Democrats a 23-seat majority in the House. That means they win 229 seats. However, the margin of error is wide enough that they could end up with 205 seats, short of a majority, or 262 seats, well more than needed for a majority.”

Republicans Narrow Focus to Two Dozen Races

October 12, 2018 at 10:09 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

New York Times: “Republican Party leaders are racing to reinforce their candidates in about two-dozen districts, trying to create a barricade around their imperiled majority. They are pouring money and effort mainly into moderate suburban areas… that they see as critical to holding the chamber by even a one-seat margin. And they have begun to pull millions of dollars away from Republican candidates who have fallen substantially behind in once-competitive races.”

“Republicans steering the House effort believe that by intensifying their efforts in a smaller number of districts, they can limit Democratic gains to perhaps 20 seats on Nov. 6 — just short of the 23 seats Democrats need to take over the House.”

Flashback Quote of the Day

October 12, 2018 at 9:47 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“The states are the laboratories of democracy. And my state, Arizona, is clearly the meth lab of democracy.”

— Rep. Kyrsten Sinema (D-AZ), speaking at Netroots Nation in 2010.

O’Rourke Raised $38.1 Million In Three Months

October 12, 2018 at 9:36 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Rep. Beto O’Rourke raised an astonishing $38.1 million in three months, as Democrats in Texas and nationwide showered him with donations for his bid to oust Sen. Ted Cruz,” the Dallas Morning News reports.

“The haul smashed previous records for a U.S. Senate contest, and assures that the hard fought race, already the nation’s costliest, remains on top of the 2018 list.”

“O’Rourke’s haul is more than triple the $12 million that Cruz said he raised from July through September.”

The Fixer

October 12, 2018 at 9:21 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Just published: The Fixer: My Adventures Saving Startups from Death by Politics by Bradley Tusk.

James Hohmann: “As crazy as it sounds a decade later, Michael Bloomberg considered Anthony Weiner his most formidable potential challenger as he prepared to seek a third term as mayor of New York City in 2009. Sparing no expense, the billionaire’s political team used a grab bag of tricks to successfully dissuade the then-congressman from running. Bloomberg’s campaign manager, Bradley Tusk, offers an entertaining window into the dark arts of opposition research and tips on getting inside a rival’s head in a chapter of his new book, The Fixer.”

It’s a must-read book.

Trump Is Making America Anxious

October 12, 2018 at 9:12 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Politico: “During normal times, therapists say, their sessions deal with familiar themes: relationships, self-esteem, everyday coping. Current events don’t usually invade. But numerous counselors said Trump and his convulsive effect on America’s national conversation is giving politics a prominence on the psychologist’s couch not seen since the months after 9/11—another moment in which events were frightening in a way that had widespread emotional consequences.”

“Empirical data bolsters the anecdotal reports from practitioners. The American Psychiatric Association in a May survey found that 39% of people said their anxiety level had risen over the previous year—and 56 percent were either ‘extremely anxious’ or ‘somewhat anxious’ about the impact of politics on daily life. A 2017 study found two-thirds of Americans’ see the nation’s future as a ‘very or somewhat significant source of stress.'”
