Intelligence Officials See Saudis Behind Killing

October 17, 2018 at 9:04 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“American intelligence officials are increasingly convinced that Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman of Saudi Arabia is culpable in the killing of the dissident journalist Jamal Khashoggi, an appraisal that poses challenges to a White House intent on maintaining a close relationship with the kingdom,” the New York Times reports.

“Intelligence agencies have not yet been able to collect direct evidence of the prince’s involvement, American and European officials said.”

“But intelligence agencies have growing circumstantial evidence of the prince’s involvement — including the presence of members of his security detail and intercepts of Saudi officials discussing a possible plan to detain Mr. Khashoggi.”

Another Trump Building Takes Down His Name

October 17, 2018 at 7:07 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

The residents of a Manhattan condominium called “Trump Place” have voted to remove the president’s name from the tower’s facade, the latest in a string of properties that have distanced themselves from the Trump brand since Election Day 2016, the Washington Post reports.

Mueller’s Quiet Period Hasn’t Been Very Quiet

October 17, 2018 at 7:04 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

CNN: “September and October at first glance appear to be quiet periods for the investigation, under the Justice Department’s guidelines to avoid public political acts before the midterm elections. But the quiet period has seen a persistent murmur of activity, based on near-daily sightings of Mueller’s prosecutors and sources involved in the investigation.”

“In addition to Manafort, Mueller’s team has kept interviewing witnesses, gathered a grand jury weekly to meet in Washington on most Fridays, and kicked up other still-secret court action. Plus, the discussions between the President’s legal team and the special counsel’s office have intensified in recent weeks, including after the special counsel sent questions about possible collusion between the Trump campaign and Russian government. The President’s attorneys are expected to reply to the questions in writing.”

“People around Trump and other witnesses believe more criminal indictments will come from Mueller.”

ABC News reports Mueller’s team has been asking cooperating witness Paul Manafort many questions about former Trump adviser Roger Stone.

Biden Says Trump Coddles Dictators

October 17, 2018 at 7:02 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Former Vice President Joe Biden told CBS News that President Trump “seems to have a love affair with autocrats.”

He added: “I just don’t know why this administration seems to feel the need to coddle autocrats and dictators from Putin to Kim Jong Un to you know Duterte. I don’t understand it.”

When asked to explain Trump’s behavior, Biden responded: “I don’t want to speculate on my worst fears. But, either he doesn’t know what he is doing or he has an absolutely convoluted notion of what allows America to lead the world.”

Democratic Candidates Have Raised Over $1 Billion

October 17, 2018 at 7:00 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Democratic candidates running for Congress this year collectively raised more than $1 billion for their campaigns — a record-shattering sum that highlights the party’s zeal to retake the House and Senate and underscores the enormous amount of money flowing into the midterm races,” the Washington Post reports.

“The $1.06 billion raised through the end of September surpasses the nearly $900 million collected by Republican candidates for Congress in 2012 — previously the largest haul registered by a single party by this point in the election cycle.”

Pompeo Learned Little From Quick Trip to Saudi Arabia

October 17, 2018 at 6:16 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Secretary of State Mike Pompeo has cast himself as a tough, straight-talking former Army tank commander with the moral clarity necessary to confront the world’s bad guys. But on his quick trip to Saudi Arabia, where he sat smiling with royal leaders suspected of involvement in the disappearance of a dissident Saudi journalist, he hardly seemed the image of principled diplomacy,” the New York Times reports.

“As he was leaving Riyadh, the Saudi capital, on Wednesday, Mr. Pompeo was asked if Saudi officials had told him whether the Washington Post columnist Jamal Khashoggi was alive or dead.”

Said Pompeo: “I don’t want to talk about any of the facts. They didn’t want to either.”

Politico: “Pompeo’s performance can be chalked up to any number of factors, including the inevitable trade-offs most U.S. administrations find they must make in dealing with unsavory allies who happen to be key to American interests. But it was also an example of Pompeo — a former Army tank commander who loves tough talk — toeing the Trump line, even if it risks tarnishing his image.”

Republicans May Try to Repeal Obamacare Again

October 17, 2018 at 2:47 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) told Reuters that Republicans could try again to repeal Obamacare if they win enough seats in U.S. elections next month, calling a failed 2017 push to repeal the healthcare law a “disappointment.”

Said McConnell: “If we had the votes to completely start over, we’d do it. But that depends on what happens in a couple weeks… We’re not satisfied with the way Obamacare is working.”

Zinke Fires His Department’s Inspector General

October 17, 2018 at 2:44 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“At last count, Interior Secretary Ryan Zinke was the subject of 14 separate government investigations. (A new record!) But that number could soon be zero. That’s because Zinke just fired the Department of the Interior’s acting inspector general,” Outside reports.

“The news doesn’t stop there. Not only did Mary Kendall, the acting inspector general, not learn she was being replaced until The Hill broke the news this morning, but her replacement will likely be able to fill the role without needing to go through Senate confirmation.”

Record Number of Families Crossing Border

October 17, 2018 at 2:17 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“The number of migrant parents entering the United States with children has surged to record levels in the three months since President Trump ended family separations at the border, dealing the administration a deepening crisis three weeks before the midterm elections,” the Washington Post reports.

“Border Patrol agents arrested 16,658 family members in September, the highest one-month total on record and an 80 percent increase from July.”

“Having campaigned on a promise to stop illegal immigration and build a border wall, Trump now faces a spiraling enforcement challenge with no ready solutions.”

Elizabeth Warren Is Playing a Sucker’s Game

October 17, 2018 at 1:57 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Peter Hamby: “Elizabeth Warren’s maneuver stands as a warning sign for other Democrats on the path to challenging Trump in 2020. Getting into the mud pit with Trump—who doesn’t care about political decorum, rules, sexism, racism, name-calling, facts, or reason—has revealed itself as a sucker’s game for politicians and peacocking White House correspondents who try to joust with him. Talk to anyone in politics, and they’ll tell you the same thing: tangling with Trump is just really hard, and there’s no clear alternative playbook. Like a scientist trying to argue with a climate-change denier, you’ll just end up drowning in a tide of bad faith.”

“Even so, Warren has been punching at Trump ever since he took office. Rarely does she let one of Trump’s personal attacks go unchallenged, something that sets her apart from most every Democrat who might run in 2020, aside from Orange County attorney Michael Avenatti.”

Ellison Said Ex-Wife Abused Him

October 17, 2018 at 1:46 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Rep. Keith Ellison’s (D-MN) “divorce records unsealed Wednesday contain no allegations the Minnesota congressman physically abused his ex-wife, but he said in a 2015 filing that Kim Ellison repeatedly hit him throughout their 25-year marriage,” the St. Paul Pioneer Press reports.

“The Ellisons tried to block release of the file, with Kim Ellison arguing that it would expose personal and painful details about her depression and health, but the Minnesota Court of Appeals rejected that bid on Tuesday.”

President Trump “said he will ask all cabinet departments to cut their budgets by 5 percent next year, after the federal budget deficit swelled to its highest level since 2012 during the first full fiscal year of his presidency,” Bloomberg reports.

Judge Denies Manafort Request to Wear Suit In Court

October 17, 2018 at 12:29 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“The judge in Paul Manafort’s Virginia trial denied the former Trump campaign chairman’s request to wear a suit for his next hearing on Oct. 19, and ‘all subsequent hearings,’ arguing that Manafort should be treated no differently than other defendants who are in custody,” TPM reports.

Wrote Judge T.S. Ellis: “Defendants who are in custody post-conviction are, as a matter of course, not entitled to appear for sentencing or any other hearing in street clothing. This defendant should be treated no differently from other defendants who are in custody post-conviction.”

Treasury Official Charged In Leaks

October 17, 2018 at 12:29 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Washington Post: “Natalie Mayflower Sours Edwards, a senior adviser at the Treasury Department’s Financial Crimes Enforcement Network, is charged with providing to a reporter suspicious financial activity reports on several people and entities, including the Russian Embassy and President Trump’s former campaign advisers Paul Manafort and Richard Gates.”

“The charges reflect the latest move in the Trump administration’s effort to root out leakers within the government.”
