Emails Show GOP Staff Stymied Kavanaugh Accuser

September 28, 2018 at 10:11 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

The New Yorker reports that email correspondence between Deborah Ramirez’s legal team and Republican and Democratic Senate staffers “shows that a Republican aide declined to proceed with telephone calls and instead repeatedly demanded that Ramirez produce additional evidence in written form. Only then could any conversation about her testimony proceed.”

“The exchange culminated in a breakdown of communication between the two sides, as Republican and Democratic staffers traded accusations of stonewalling.”

Unanswered Questions About Kavanaugh’s Calendars

September 28, 2018 at 10:03 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

First Read: “Another thing that struck us yesterday was just how empty questioning from the Democrats on the committee was. With some exceptions (Klobuchar comes to mind), they mostly lectured Kavanaugh and their Republican colleagues rather than trying to land a punch.”

“One obvious question not asked: Why do you think Dr. Ford is so certain that it was you? Another: Why couldn’t your July 1 calendar entry, which references some of the individuals Dr. Ford named, be the event in question? The GOP-hired attorney — who ironically did more damage to Kavanaugh than any Democratic senators — got close to addressing that July 1 question, but then Graham stole the show.”

Americans Politics Hits a New Low

September 28, 2018 at 8:35 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Washington Post: “A hearing that was supposed to bring clarity instead erupted in thunderclaps from the nation’s built-up tensions over how the sexes are supposed to behave with each other. Judge Brett Kavanaugh and the woman who accused him of sexually assaulting her came before the Senate Judiciary Committee in ‘the wrong town at the wrong time,’ as Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-SC) put it.”

“The result was affirmation that Washington is as broken as it has ever been. Based on what the senators in the room said, the result was, once again, people hearing mostly what they were inclined to believe. The result, far from clarity, was a complex rush of emotions adding up to two families left in wreckage and a political system without even a pathway to cooperation.”

“The day ended with discord bordering on dark visions of a hopeless future.”

Quote of the Day

September 28, 2018 at 8:31 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“What I was thinking is, if he was a judge in a courtroom and I had acted like that…he would have thrown me out. The point is, he did apologize later, publicly, to me, which I appreciate it. Still, the problem for me is, he really didn’t answer the question about if there have been incidences where he didn’t partially remember what happened.”

— Sen. Amy Klobuchar (D-MN), in an interview with NBC News, on questioning Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh about his drinking.

Black Lawmaker Resigns After Racial Threats

September 28, 2018 at 8:25 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Kiah Morris, the only African-American woman in the Vermont House of Representatives, announced her resignation, a month after she ended her re-election bid because of what she described as a yearslong campaign of racially motivated harassment and threats,” the New York Times reports.

As Morris told the Washington Post: “The sacrifices were becoming too great.”

Big Trump Donor Made Overture to Top Russian Official

September 28, 2018 at 8:04 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“A Russian-born American businessman who gave hundreds of thousands of dollars to support Donald Trump’s run for president in 2016 offered to brief a high-ranking Russian official during the final months of the campaign,” according to a series of emails reviewed by NBC News.

“The businessman, Simon Kukes, a Houston-based oil executive, sent an email to the official in Moscow in July 2016, boasting of his connections to the Trump campaign and requesting a face-to-face meeting.”

Top Catholic Magazine Pulls Kavanaugh Endorsement

September 28, 2018 at 7:14 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

America, an influential Jesuit magazine, has rescinded its endorsement Judge Brett Kavanaugh to be on the Supreme Court.

“We continue to support the nomination of judges according to such principles—but Judge Kavanaugh is not the only such nominee available. For the good of the country and the future credibility of the Supreme Court in a world that is finally learning to take reports of harassment, assault and abuse seriously, it is time to find a nominee whose confirmation will not repudiate that lesson.”

Whip Count on Kavanaugh Leans Confirmation

September 28, 2018 at 7:00 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell has 48 hard “yes” votes to confirm Brett Kavanaugh to the Supreme Court, and needs 50 for a win, with Vice President Pence breaking the tie, Axios reports.

“Republicans are increasingly optimistic about getting the vote of Sen. Joe Manchin of West Virginia, who’s in a tough reelection race in a state Trump won by 42 points (not a typo).”

“The uncommitted Republican senators are Susan Collins of Maine, Lisa Murkowski of Alaska and the retiring Jeff Flake of Arizona. GOP vote counters believe that to avoid future primary challenges fueled by the Trump machine, Collins and Murkowski will find their way to voting aye.”

Politico: “Donnelly, Manchin, Murkowski and Collins are all expected to vote the same way, per senators and aides.”

A Legitimacy Crisis Looms

September 28, 2018 at 6:25 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Mike Allen: “If Kavanaugh is confirmed, Democrats could be expected to question the legitimacy of his swing Supreme Court vote. Congress degraded itself yesterday. And the Trump White House of course has serious credibility issues.”

“So the United States of America will be three-for-three in diminished trust in its branches of government.”

David Wasserman: “To Dems who can’t believe what they’re watching, remember: a majority of the Senate now represents 18% of the population and answers to a subset of voters that is considerably whiter, redder and more rural than the nation as a whole. That’s the reality of our times.”

Bar Association Calls for FBI Investigation

September 28, 2018 at 6:19 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

CBS News: “The American Bar Association has urged the Senate Judiciary Committee and the full Senate to slow down the confirmation process for President Trump’s Supreme Court pick, Judge Brett Kavanaugh, until the FBI has time to do a full background check on the claims made by Dr. Christine Blasey Ford and other women.”

The Kavanaugh Votes Begin

September 28, 2018 at 6:17 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Roll Call: “Well, that was a day. The lengthy hearing featuring testimony and questioning of Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh and Christine Blasey Ford, the woman who has accused him of sexual assault, has resulted in Republicans’ decision to go ahead with a confirmation vote in the Senate Judiciary Committee on Friday. “

“One important thing to note: Even if Kavanaugh does not secure majority support in the committee vote, his nomination can still make it to the floor. So even if the judge does not secure that 11th vote (the partisan breakdown is 11 Republicans and 10 Democrats), the majority leader can still get the nomination on the executive calendar. The committee could report it to the floor unfavorably, for instance, and still get it from that Dirksen Building hearing room to the Capitol.”

“Bottom line? Regardless of what happens in committee, we could still be in for a series of tough votes, starting Saturday, on the nomination.”

Inside the Plan to Move Julian Assange to Russia

September 28, 2018 at 6:12 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Documents reviewed and authenticated by ABC News in Quito show that the Ecuadorian government gave Assange diplomatic credentials and diplomatic immunity in order to allow him to leave their London embassy without fear of arrest by British police and take up a post in Russia.”

Corker Will Vote for Kavanaugh

September 27, 2018 at 10:34 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Sen. Bob Corker (R-TN) announced that he will vote for Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh, after the judge testified in response to allegations of sexual assault, The Hill reports.

Flake Still Undecided on Kavanaugh

September 27, 2018 at 10:15 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Sen. Jeff Flake, seen as a key swing vote who could either put Brett Kavanaugh on the Supreme Court or kill his chances, is not committing to voting for the nominee at a Friday morning Judiciary Committee markup,” Roll Call reports.

“The Arizona Republican sounded very conflicted Thursday evening following a meeting of the Senate Republican Conference after the Judiciary panel spent nearly nine hours Thursday hearing from Kavanaugh and Christine Blasey Ford, who has accused him of sexually assaulting her at a party decades ago when they were both in high school.”

USA Today: “Flake spoke for only one minute and said little. His brief, but likely vital appearance, near the end of the daylong hearing lent a cliffhanger quality to a nomination still hurtling toward a dramatic finish.”

A Stark Choice for Senators

September 27, 2018 at 10:10 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

New York Times: “With millions of Americans alternately riveted and horrified by the televised drama, Dr. Blasey and Judge Kavanaugh left no room for compromise, no possibility of confusion, no chance that they remembered something differently. In effect, they asked senators to choose which one they believed. And in that moment, these two 100 percent realities came to embody a society divided into broader realities so disparate and so incompatible that it feels as if two countries are living in the borders of one.”

“It has become something of a cliché to say that the United States has become increasingly tribal in the era of President Trump, with each side in its own corner, believing what it chooses to believe and looking for reinforcement in the media and politics. But the battle over Judge Kavanaugh’s Supreme Court nomination has reinforced those divisions at the intersection of sex, politics, power and the law.”

Republicans to Move Forward on Kavanaugh Vote

September 27, 2018 at 8:28 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Emerging from a closed-door meeting late Thursday, GOP senators said the Senate Judiciary Committee would meet Friday morning to consider the nomination and a procedural vote by the full Senate would occur on Saturday, the Washington Post reports.
