Why One GOP Lawmaker Dismisses Tax Bill Projections

December 16, 2017 at 8:46 am EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Rep. Tom Cole (R-OK) admitted to CNBC that he’s not “a deep economic thinker,” so he relies for advice on colleagues from the tax-writing Ways and Means Committee.

“Though mainstream forecasters like the Joint Committee on Taxation and University of Pennsylvania have issued unflattering analyses of GOP proposals, Cole says his tax-committee colleagues tell him other models offer sunnier results in line with his core belief that lower taxes boost the economy. He doesn’t know what those models are, but doesn’t worry about that. He distrusts economic forecasts across the board because, he says, they’re so often wrong.”

Said Cole: “I don’t find any of that persuasive. There are about as many economists as there are opinions.”

Worst Piece of Legislation In Modern History

December 16, 2017 at 8:32 am EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Fareed Zakaria: “If the Republican tax plan passes Congress, it will mark a watershed for the United States. The medium- and long-term effects of the plan will be a massive drop in public investment, which will come on the heels of decades of declining spending (as a percentage of gross domestic product) on infrastructure, scientific research, skills training and core government agencies. The United States can’t coast on past investments forever, and with this legislation, we are ushering in a bleak future.”

“There are genuine problems beyond underfunding. The costs of building American infrastructure are astronomical. But during the Depression, World War II and much of the Cold War, a sense of crisis and competition focused America’s attention and created a bipartisan urgency to get things done. Ironically, at a time when competition is far more fierce, when other countries have surpassed the United States in many of these areas, America has fallen into extreme partisanship and embraced a know-nothing libertarianism that is starving the country of the essential investments it needs for growth. Those who vote for this tax bill — possibly the worst piece of major legislation in a generation — will live in infamy, as the country slowly breaks down.”

How ‘Trump’ Became a Racial Jeer

December 16, 2017 at 8:23 am EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

New York Times: “Last year’s contentious presidential election gave oxygen to hate. An analysis of F.B.I. crime data by the Center for the Study of Hate & Extremism at California State University, San Bernardino, found a 26 percent increase in bias incidents in the last quarter of 2016 — the heart of the election season — compared with the same period the previous year. The trend has continued into 2017, with the latest partial data for the nation’s five most populous cities showing a 12 percent increase.”

“Peppered among these incidents is a phenomenon distinct from the routine racism so familiar in this country: the provocative use of ‘Trump,’ after the man whose comments about Mexicans, Muslims and undocumented immigrants — coupled with his muted responses to white nationalist activity — have proved so inflammatory.”

Why Democrats Failed to Stop the GOP Tax Bill

December 16, 2017 at 8:20 am EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Politico: “Democrats haven’t given up hope of stopping the Republican tax plan on the 1-yard line — relentlessly flogging the substance and process of the bill — but the reasons for their likely failure are becoming clear.”

“While stripping people of health insurance strikes at a visceral human need, a debate over taxes tends to bog voters down in wonky details. Meanwhile, Democrats struggled to break through a media environment crowded with an intensifying Russia investigation, a wave of sexual harassment scandals and a fight over young undocumented immigrants. And while liberal grassroots activists sought to bring pressure to bear on GOP swing votes, the Republican Party held together this time, desperate for a major legislative victory after a year in total control of Washington.”

Trump Deported Fewer Than Obama In First Year

December 16, 2017 at 8:15 am EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Despite President Trump’s tough-on-immigration rhetoric, there have been fewer deportations in his first year as president than there were in any year of Barack Obama’s presidency,” Axios reports.

“There were 177,000 fewer deportations this year than in 2009, Obama’s first year in office.”

Nine More Women Accuse Judge of Sexual Misconduct

December 16, 2017 at 8:09 am EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Nine more women say that Alex Kozinski — a high-profile judge who sits on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 9th Circuit — subjected them to sexual comments or other conduct, including four who say he touched them inappropriately,” the Washington Post reports.

“Kozinski, known for his libertarian views and colorful written opinions, already had been accused of subjecting several women to a range of inappropriate sexual conduct or comments… The new allegations — which span decades and include not just those who worked for Kozinski but also those who encountered him at events — bring the total number of women accusing the judge of inappropriate behavior to at least 15.”

Virginia Lawmaker Denies Sexual Misconduct Claim

December 16, 2017 at 8:02 am EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Rep. Bobby Scott (D-VA) denied an allegation that he sexually harassed a staffer in 2013, Politico reports.

“M. Reese Everson, a former Congressional Black Caucus Foundation fellow, alleged earlier Friday that Scott touched her inappropriately, propositioned her for sex and wrongfully terminated her in 2013.”

McCain Described as Increasingly Frail

December 15, 2017 at 11:38 pm EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Sources in the Senate tell CNN they have been worried about Sen. John McCain recently.

“The sources described McCain as looking increasingly frail and said he has not spoken up in recent GOP meetings the way he had before, in addition to his absence this week for treatment at Walter Reed Medical Center.”

”One source said that McCain always used to speak up in these meetings, and that he hasn’t at all recently. The source was not commenting on McCain’s mental acuity, but on his energy level, and pointing out that his lack of participation was not normal.”

Trump Administration Issues List of Forbidden Words

December 15, 2017 at 10:45 pm EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Washington Post: “The Trump administration is prohibiting officials at the nation’s top public health agency from using a list of seven words or phrases — including ‘fetus’ and ‘transgender’ — in any official documents being prepared for next year’s budget.”

“Policy analysts at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in Atlanta were told of the list of forbidden words at a meeting Thursday with senior CDC officials who oversee the budget, according to an analyst who took part in the 90-minute briefing. The forbidden words are ‘vulnerable,’ ‘entitlement,’ ‘diversity,’ ‘transgender,’ ‘fetus,’ ‘evidence-based’ and ‘science-based.’”

“In some instances, the analysts were given alternative phrases. Instead of ‘science-based’ or ‘evidence-based,’ the suggested phrase is ‘CDC bases its recommendations on science in consideration with community standards and wishes,’ the person said. In other cases, no replacement words were immediately offered.”

Kushner Looking for Help with Crisis Public Relations

December 15, 2017 at 3:51 pm EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Jared Kushner and his legal team are searching for a crisis public relations firm, the Washington Post reports.

“Crisis PR firms are often retained to handle a negative development or an avalanche of media inquiries. Kushner has been in the headlines almost daily and he has complained to friends about the nonstop negative attention from the news media. White House officials have speculated for months that Kushner and his wife, Ivanka Trump, would return to New York, but he has told associates over the last month that he plans to stay.”

Corker Flips to Support Tax Bill

December 15, 2017 at 3:44 pm EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Sen. Bob Corker (R-TN) said that he will support the GOP tax plan, saying the legislation represents a “once-in-a-generation opportunity,” The Hill reports.

Said Corker: “I know every bill we consider is imperfect and the question becomes is our country better off with or without this piece of legislation. I think we are better off with it. I realize this is a bet on our country’s enterprising spirit, and that is a bet I am willing to make.”

Axios: “Corker’s vote essentially cements the tax bill’s passage before the Christmas deadline.”

Americans Pessimistic About Trump

December 15, 2017 at 11:47 am EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

A new AP-NORC poll finds President Trump’s job approval rating at just 32%, making him the least popular first-year president on record.

“As 2017 comes to a close, the majority of Americans painted a broadly pessimistic view of Trump’s presidency, the nation’s politics and the overall direction of the country. Just three in 10 Americans said the United States is heading in the right direction, and 52 percent said the country is worse off since Trump became president — worrisome signs both for the White House and Republicans heading into a midterm election year where control of Congress will be at stake.”

GOP Adjusts Tax Plan In Bid to Win Over Rubio

December 15, 2017 at 11:23 am EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Congressional Republicans finished rewriting their massive plan to overhaul the tax code on Friday, adding in a significant expansion of the Child Tax Credit aimed at boosting benefits for low-income families,” the Washington Post reports.

“The change was added to meet demands from Sen. Marco Rubio (R-FL), who threatened on Thursday to vote against the bill unless the credit was expanded, injecting last-minute chaos into a process.”

New York Times: “Even if he were to oppose the final bill, Mr. Rubio would not by himself stop the legislation from making its way to Mr. Trump’s desk, as Republicans hope to do next week; the bill passed the Senate with one Republican vote to spare, and if Mr. Rubio were to defect, Vice President Mike Pence could still break a tie in the bill’s favor.”

Axios: “It now seems likely Rubio will vote for the bill and, sparing any other last-minute issues, the bill will cruise to passage next week.”

Female Candidate Accused of Harassment Drops Bid

December 15, 2017 at 10:17 am EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Andrea Ramsey (D) will drop out of her congressional race after the Kansas City Star asked her “about accusations in a 2005 lawsuit that she sexually harassed and retaliated against a male subordinate who said he had rejected her advances.”

“Multiple sources with knowledge of the case told The Star that the man reached a settlement with LabOne, the company where Ramsey was executive vice president of human resources.”

Bonus Quote of the Day

“I don’t want to talk about pardons for Michael Flynn yet. We will see what happens.”

Trump’s Lies vs. Obama’s Lies

December 15, 2017 at 9:37 am EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

New York Times: “After we published a list of President Trump’s lies this summer, we heard a common response from his supporters. They said, in effect: Yes, but if you made a similar list for previous presidents, it would be just as bad.”

“We’ve set out to make that list… We applied the same conservative standard to Obama and Trump, counting only demonstrably and substantially false statements. The result: Trump is unlike any other modern president. He seems virtually indifferent to reality, often saying whatever helps him make the case he’s trying to make.”

Roy Moore Has Still Not Conceded

December 15, 2017 at 9:16 am EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Washington Post: “Moore, who lost by 20,715 votes, is not in a position to ask for a recount. Alabama law does not trigger a recount unless the margin between two candidates is less than 0.5 percent; according to the latest count by the Associated Press, the margin between Jones and Moore is 1.5 percent.”

“Alabama Secretary of State John Merrill, who sided with Moore’s campaign during several election controversies, has said that the election will be certified Dec. 28. But at the same time, Merrill’s office has had to brush off conspiracy theories promoted by pro-Moore websites, which have suggested that the results were tainted by fraud.”

“One theory, which went viral before being debunked by Snopes.com, was that multiple black voters were caught trying to vote with fake IDs. (More than 95 percent of black voters supported Jones, giving him his winning margin.) Another, also debunked quickly, was that vans of illegal voters were seen somewhere in the state.”
