Ex-Manafort Associate Charged with Illegal Lobbying

August 31, 2018 at 10:56 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Samuel Patten, an associate of former Trump campaign chairman Paul Manafort, was charged Friday with failing to register as a foreign agent for a pro-Russian Ukrainian political party,” Politico reports.

“The case, being handled by the U.S. attorney for Washington, was referred by special counsel Robert Mueller. The matter was scheduled for an 11 a.m. hearing in a D.C. federal court before Judge Amy Berman Jackson, who is also expected to preside over Manafort’s upcoming trial on money laundering charges.”

Earlier this year, The Alantic explained Patten’s connection to Cambridge Analytica and the suspected Russian intelligence agent Konstantin Kilimnik.

Inside Kavanaugh’s Hearing Prep

August 31, 2018 at 9:54 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“On Monday, Kavanaugh participated in his last full moot court session, which lasted nearly the entire day. Sitting in a large office in the Eisenhower Executive Office Building, he took questions from aides who played key members of the committee, mimicking their style of questioning,” Politico reports.

“The mock hearing room has been outfitted with a dais, nametags, microphones and a clock with red and green lights meant to keep his answers within the allotted time limit. The sessions, which are often referred to as ‘murder boards,’ have also featured faux protesters to make sure Kavanaugh stays cool in the event of a mid-hearing outburst.”

The Fight for Trump’s Tax Returns Heats Up

August 31, 2018 at 8:54 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

ABC News: “From Congress to the courts, Democrats are engaged in a quiet but sprawling push to obtain a copy of President Donald Trump’s tax returns, which they say could shed fresh light on possible conflicts of interest, foreign business deals and even the Russian efforts to interfere in the 2016 election.”

“Questions about Trump’s refusal to release his tax returns have followed the president from the campaign trail to the Oval Office and reemerged in force last week as a pair of Trump’s closest former aides -– his former campaign chairman Paul Manafort and his former personal attorney Michael Cohen –- confronted serious tax fraud charges that will likely land both of them behind bars.”

Two Prosecutors Leave Mueller’s Office

August 31, 2018 at 8:28 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Prosecutors Ryan Dickey and Brian Richardson are no longer working for the office of special counsel Robert Mueller,” the Justice Department confirmed to CNN.

“Both lawyers were relatively junior but frequently spotted members of Mueller’s corps. Both have worked on court cases that Mueller opened as part of his investigation into Russian interference and coordination with the Trump campaign in the 2016 presidential election.”

Nearly Half of Americans Favor Impeaching Trump

August 31, 2018 at 8:24 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

August 31, 2018 at 8:06 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Trump claimed Mueller’s investigation was “illegal” in an interview with Bloomberg.

Trump Asserts Only He Can Be Trusted

August 31, 2018 at 7:25 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Over roughly the past day, President Trump has decried the ‘totally dishonest’ media, with its ‘fake news’ and ‘fake books.’ He has argued that Google is biased against conservatives. And he has accused NBC News of ‘fudging’ the tape of an interview with him that has been available online for more than a year,” the Washington Post reports.

“The president has even declared there is no chaos in his White House, which he claimed is a ‘smooth running machine’ with changing parts,’ despite the tumult that emanates almost daily from within its walls.”

“Trump’s assertions — all on Twitter, some false, some without clear evidence — come just over nine weeks before the midterm elections that could help determine his fate, and they are bound by one unifying theme: All of his perceived opponents are peddling false facts and only Trump can be trusted.”

Trump Disapproval Hits New High

August 31, 2018 at 7:16 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

A new ABC News-Washington Post poll finds 60% of voters disapprove of President Trump’s performance in office, numerically the highest of his presidency, albeit by a single point; that includes 53% who disapprove strongly, more than half for the first time.

Meanwhile, just 36% approve, matching his low.

House Republicans Have Tough Decisions Ahead

August 31, 2018 at 7:14 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“With a massive field of vulnerable House incumbents to defend and limited resources to go around, Republicans are readying for a painful round of political triage — deciding which lawmakers are worth trying to rescue, and which ones need to be cut loose to fend for themselves in November,” Politico reports.

“GOP officials say as many as 45 Republican-held seats are at serious risk, making it impossible to salvage each one in the costly scramble to protect the party’s 23-seat majority – especially those members who have waged sluggish campaigns and posted lackluster fundraising totals.”

“Behind the scenes, senior party strategists have begun polling to determine which incumbents may be beyond saving.”

August 30, 2018 at 9:41 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

President Trump, speaking to a raucous, campaign-style rally in Indiana, warned that the Justice Department and the FBI must “start doing their job and doing it right” or “I will get involved,” Reuters reports.

Said Trump: “I wanted to stay out, but at some point if it doesn’t straighten out properly … I will get involved and I’ll get in there if I have to.”

August 30, 2018 at 9:37 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

A new Spectrum News/Siena College poll in New York’s 19th congressional district finds Rep. John Faso holds a five-point lead over his challenger Antonio Delgado (D), 45% to 40%.

Said pollster Steven Greenberg: “In a district, closely divided between Republicans and Democrats, freshman incumbent Faso has a real race on his hands as he holds a narrow five-point lead over first-time candidate Delgado.”

Trump Won’t Say If McCain Would Have Been Better

August 30, 2018 at 9:07 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

When asked by Bloomberg if the late Sen. John McCain (R-AZ) would have been a better president than Barack Obama, President Trump “declined to say, even as his press secretary, Sarah Huckabee Sanders, stared at him.”

Said Trump: “I don’t want to comment on it. I have a very strong opinion, all right.”

He then joked that Sanders was “having a nervous breakdown” over his response. “Maybe I’ll give you that answer some day later.”

Bonus Quote of the Day

August 30, 2018 at 9:02 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“If you look at the definition of impeachment, that’s a high bar and that would take a long time to fight that if you’re doing a good job. And I’m doing a great job.”

— President Trump, in an interview with Bloomberg.

Mueller Anticipation Builds as 60-Day Window Nears

August 30, 2018 at 8:14 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“The window closes next week for special counsel Robert Mueller to take any more bombshell actions before midterm season officially kicks off, and people in the president’s orbit and across Washington are watching with heightened anticipation that his final pre-election surprise could come soon,” Politico reports.

“The increased attention stems from Justice Department guidelines that recommend against law enforcement taking major investigative or prosecutorial actions close to an election, so as not to unduly influence voters. Although primaries have been underway for months, Giuliani and others have said the 60-day period before the election should be free of any big activity by Mueller’s team.”

Meanwhile, Chuck Todd issued a warning to the press regarding the Russia investigation: “Don’t miss work tomorrow.”

Trump May Have Another Reason to Shut Government

August 30, 2018 at 8:12 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Stan Collender: “Donald Trump has added another reason he might cause a government shutdown a month from now: no pay raise for federal employees of domestic federal agencies and departments.”

“Congress can, and in my estimation probably will, reject this. The House and Senate will likely put language that mandates the civilian pay raise in the continuing resolution that will be needed by October 1 to keep the government open.”

“The question then will be what will Trump with a CR that very openly defies him.”

GOP Candidate Holds Event for ‘Above Average People’

August 30, 2018 at 8:00 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

An invite that appeared to have been sent from the campaign of Wisconsin state Sen. Leah Vukmir (R), who’s running against Sen. Tammy Baldwin (D-WI), promoted a fundraising event for “above average people,” The Hill reports.

For $500, attendees are invited to “relax amongst other above average people while enjoying hors d’oeuvres and refreshments” on Sept. 5.
