How Trump Manipulates TV Coverage

June 7, 2016 at 1:00 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard 27 Comments

BuzzFeed: “Conversations with more than a dozen reporters, producers, and executives across the major networks reveal internal tensions about the wall-to-wall coverage Trump has received and the degree to which the Republican frontrunner has — or hasn’t — been challenged on their air.”

“Two network sources also confirmed the unprecedented control the television networks have surrendered to Trump in a series of private negotiations, allowing him to dictate specific details about placement of cameras at his event, to ensure coverage consists primarily of a single shot of his face.”

June 7, 2016 at 12:36 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard 97 Comments

In attempting to defend Donald Trump in the wake of his racist statements, Rep. Lee Zeldin (R-NY) shows the tremendous difficulties Republicans will have for the next five months.

Can Republicans Stick with Trump for 5 More Months?

June 7, 2016 at 11:44 am EDT By Taegan Goddard 111 Comments

Chris Cillizza: “For party leaders who’ve lined up with Trump amid polling that suggested he was running surprisingly competitively against Democrat Hillary Clinton, the time is rapidly approaching to either hop off the Trump train or decide you are riding it all the way to Nov. 8.”

“At the moment, it appears as though most party leaders are trying to dangle a leg off the train while still holding on.”

Quote of the Day

June 7, 2016 at 11:38 am EDT By Taegan Goddard 36 Comments

“This is a choice that many Americans are not happy with. But it is the choice.”

— Sen. Mitch McConnell (R-KY), in an interview with KSKY, saying the presidential election is a choice between the “lesser of two evils.”

Ryan Says Trump Was Racist But Still Backs Him

June 7, 2016 at 11:03 am EDT By Taegan Goddard 109 Comments

Speaker Paul Ryan called Donald Trump’s criticism of a Hispanic-American judge “the textbook definition of a racist comment” and said he “regrets” the remark, the New York Times reports.

But Ryan also reiterated his support for Trump, the presumptive Republican presidential nominee, against Hillary Clinton.

Clinton Didn’t Concede Immediately Either

June 7, 2016 at 9:57 am EDT By Taegan Goddard 56 Comments

It actually took Hillary Clinton four days to concede the Democratic nomination after Barack Obama secured the necessary delegates in 2008.

As NBC News reported at the time:

“Advisers indicated earlier Tuesday that the former first lady would publicly acknowledge in her speech that Obama had crossed the delegate threshold. But she changed her mind and refused to do so … Her advisers said they considered the delegate numbers to be unreliable, even as the AP estimated Obama had several more than the 2,118 needed to nominate.”

It’s Over Bernie

June 7, 2016 at 9:30 am EDT By Taegan Goddard 90 Comments

Rick Klein: “If delegates didn’t exist, and the popular vote alone counted, Hillary Clinton would be the Democratic nominee. If superdelegates didn’t exist, and only pledged delegates determined the outcome, Clinton would be the Democratic nominee. If only superdelegates mattered, and party insiders alone chose the presidential candidate, Hillary Clinton would be the Democratic nominee. As it is, under the set of rules all candidates knew were in place when they entered the race, Hillary Clinton will be the Democratic nominee.”

“Bernie Sanders has railed against a ‘rigged’ system and a closed process he says disenfranchises his supporters. But the fact is that, where the world now stands, the only way Sanders can become the Democratic nominee is if party insiders rig the process for him.”

First Read: “But you also have to give credit to Sanders. It’s really not fair to say he lost this contest; instead, he gave Clinton a race that no one saw coming, especially over the last three months.”

The GOP Resumes Its Unraveling

This piece is only available to Political Wire members.

Since the end of the Bush administration, I’ve thought the Republican party was breaking apart. For much of this year, I thought the flashpoint would be a contested convention where establishment forces would attempt to steal the nomination away from Donald Trump.

Graham Urges Republicans to Take Back Endorsements

June 7, 2016 at 8:19 am EDT By Taegan Goddard 131 Comments

Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-SC) urged Republicans who have backed Donald Trump to rescind their endorsements, the New York Times reports, “citing the remarks about Judge Curiel and Mr. Trump’s expression of doubt on Sunday that a Muslim judge could remain neutral in the same lawsuit, given Mr. Trump’s proposed ban on Muslim noncitizens entering the country.”

Said Graham: “This is the most un-American thing from a politician since Joe McCarthy. If anybody was looking for an off-ramp, this is probably it. There’ll come a time when the love of country will trump hatred of Hillary.”

Bondi Asked for Trump Donation Before Nixing Case

June 7, 2016 at 7:33 am EDT By Taegan Goddard 100 Comments

Florida Attorney General Pam Bondi (R) “personally solicited a political contribution from Donald Trump around the same time her office deliberated joining an investigation of alleged fraud at Trump University and its affiliates,” the AP reports.

“The money came from a Trump family foundation in apparent violation of rules surrounding political activities by charities. A political group backing Bondi’s re-election, called And Justice for All, reported receiving the check Sept. 17, 2013 — four days after Bondi’s office publicly announced she was considering joining a New York state probe of Trump University’s activities… After the check came in, Bondi’s office nixed suing Trump, citing insufficient grounds to proceed.”

Another Effort Made to Keep Bridgegate List Secret

June 7, 2016 at 7:24 am EDT By Taegan Goddard 10 Comments

“New Jersey’s top prosecutor made a personal plea to a federal appeals court Monday, asking judges to block the release of a list of people suspected of — but not charged with — involvement in the politically motivated closure of access lanes to the George Washington Bridge,” the Bergen County Record reports.

“A group of media companies, including North Jersey Media Group, the publisher of The Record, is seeking the list of so-called unindicted co-conspirators after intervening in the forthcoming trial of two former allies of Governor Christie who are accused of conspiring to close the lanes and then of covering it up. The list is believed to include public employees and elected and appointed officials who could have acted to further the conspiracy.”

Most Think Primaries Were Fair

June 7, 2016 at 7:21 am EDT By Taegan Goddard 15 Comments

NBC News/SurveyMonkey: “While some of the 2016 candidates questioned the fairness of the presidential nominating process, a majority of American voters have a different opinion. Although each party employs different nomination rules, an identical 59 percent majority of Democrats and 59 percent of Republicans think that the process for selecting their presidential nominee is fair.”

June 7, 2016 at 7:05 am EDT By Taegan Goddard 48 Comments

June 7, 2016 at 6:55 am EDT By Taegan Goddard 23 Comments

Trump Tells Surrogates to Attack Reporters as Racist

June 7, 2016 at 6:53 am EDT By Taegan Goddard 59 Comments

“An embattled Donald Trump urgently rallied his most visible supporters to defend his attacks on a federal judge’s Mexican ancestry during a conference call on Monday in which he ordered them to question the judge’s credibility and impugn reporters as racists,” Bloomberg reports.

Said Trump: “We will overcome. And I’ve always won and I’m going to continue to win. And that’s the way it is.”

Democrats Pounce on Trump Allies

June 6, 2016 at 10:33 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard 103 Comments

New York Times: “In an unusually coordinated series of attacks leveled from congressional offices and the Senate floor, in state capitols and sidewalk protests, Democrats excoriated Mr. Trump as racist and demanded that Republicans either stand behind his comments or condemn him and even rescind their endorsements of his candidacy.”

“Democrats received unexpected ammunition from Mr. Trump himself, who, in an extraordinary conference call with allies on Monday, urged them to defend his criticisms of a federal judge’s Mexican heritage — and then rebuked his campaign staff for having suggested otherwise.”

Clinton Has Delegates for the Nomination

June 6, 2016 at 10:31 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard 267 Comments

“Hillary Clinton has reached the number of delegates needed to clinch the Democratic nomination for president, an achievement that would make her the first female nominee of a major party for the presidency,” the New York Times reports.

“Mrs. Clinton had been expected to clinch the nomination on Tuesday after polls closed in New Jersey. But The Associated Press surveyed superdelegates on Monday night, and their reporting showed that Mrs. Clinton had secured the overall support of the required 2,383 delegates, according to a news release.”

Politico: Sanders condemns “rush to judgement” on Clinton nomination.
