A Big Tent, Without Democrats

August 6, 2016 at 8:02 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

The New York Times notes Donald Trump made his pitch for a “big tent” Republican party at a rally:

“I need a Republican Senate and a House to accomplish all of the change we have to make,” Mr. Trump said. He added, “I understand and embrace the wisdom of Ronald Reagan’s big tent within the party.”

“Big, big tent,” he said. “Remember?”

He paused to ask the Democrats in the crowd to raise their hands. Hardly anyone made a sound. Mr. Trump, looking unimpressed, offered that he did not need Democrats anyway.

August 6, 2016 at 7:55 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

New York Magazine: “Both Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton have options on their websites allowing supporters to set up recurring credit-card donations to their campaigns. But unlike Clinton’s, Trump’s website has no option to cancel those donations.”

Trump Says Clinton Is a ‘Monster’

August 6, 2016 at 7:33 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Donald Trump took his insults of Hillary Clinton to another level on Friday night, Politico reports.

Said Trump: “In one way, she’s a monster. In another way, she’s a weak person. She’s actually not strong enough to be president. So she’s got both.”

Trump also referred to Clinton as “unhinged” and “unbalanced.”

Ratf**ked

August 6, 2016 at 7:30 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Just out: Ratf**ked:The True Story Behind the Secret Plan to Steal America’s Democracy by David Daley.

Elizabeth Drew: “A sobering and convincing account of how the Republicans figured out the way to gain power in the state legislatures and, as a consequence, in the federal government through an unprecedented national effort of partisan redistricting… The thing to do, some Republican operatives concluded, was to focus on winning as many seats in state legislatures as possible in the 2010 midterm election and then press that advantage in the redistricting that would follow—picking up federal and state seats to offset Obama’s 2008 victory.”

How Trump Could Be Legally Replaced on the Ticket

August 5, 2016 at 4:00 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

The Daily Beast reports the Republican Party could dump Donald Trump “by declaring him unfit for office, reconvening, and nominating someone else. But it would get messier depending on how long they wait.”

“If Trump withdraws, there’s really no problem, legally speaking, even at the last minute. While his name would be on the ballot, electors would vote for the party’s actual nominee, or courts would declare Trump no longer the ‘candidate.’ All this, of course, is unprecedented. And obviously, the political upheaval would be far more significant than the legal provisions in play.”

Said Stanford law professor Nathaniel Persily: “It’s not likely. But who thought that Trump was likely?”

Bonus Quote of the Day

August 5, 2016 at 3:37 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Donald Trump is Todd Akin. He is Richard Mourdock and Sharron Angle. But that is really not fair to Akin, Mourdock and Angle. They weren’t nuts. They had political views and others that made them unelectable. With Donald Trump, it is instability. He is an absurd candidate for president. He is a neutron bomb that has gone off in the Republican Party that is destroying anyone near him.”

— GOP strategist Stuart Stevens, quoted by the Huffington Post.

Trump’s Economic Advisers Are All Wealthy Men

August 5, 2016 at 3:27 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Donald Trump “announced a new team of ultra-rich financiers and businessmen as his core economic advisers, a move that brings high-profile names to his inner circle but also may step on his populist claims to save America’s middle class,” the Washington Post reports.

The Fix: Trump’s economic team has six men named Steve, zero women

A Meaningful Shift In the Race

August 5, 2016 at 3:00 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

The Upshot: “Three national surveys — from Fox, NBC/WSJ and Marist/McClatchy — showed Mrs. Clinton ahead by big margins: 10, 9 and 15 percentage points. It’s the worst polling stretch for a presidential candidate at this stage since John McCain in mid-October of 2008.”

Can Trumpism Be Defeated Along with Trump?

August 5, 2016 at 2:00 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Peggy Noonan: “From what I’ve seen there has been zero reflection on the part of Republican leaders on how much the base’s views differ from theirs and what to do about it. The GOP is not at all refiguring its stands. The only signs of life I see are among young staffers on Capitol Hill, who understand their bosses’ stands have been rebuked and are quietly debating among themselves what policy paths will win the future.”

“Beyond that, anti-Trump Republicans treat his voters like immoral enablers of a malignant boob. Should Mr. Trump lose decisively in November they’ll lord it over everyone, say ‘I told you so,’ and accept what they imagine will be forelock-tugging apologies. Then they will get to work burying not only Mr. Trump but his issues.”

“That’s where the future of the GOP will be fought, and found: on whether Trumpism can be defeated along with Mr. Trump.”

Why Party Defections Matter

August 5, 2016 at 10:30 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Jonathan Bernstein: “In a normal election when both parties are united behind their nominee, voters will hear one message for months: that people like themselves, including the politicians they like, are supporting one candidate, while people they normally dislike or disagree with are backing the other one. Whether voters consider themselves partisans or not, that message pushes them in the ‘correct’ direction — to the candidate of the party they normally support.”

“Conventions are especially powerful in sending such signals because they dominate the news for a few days at least, drowning out the voices of the opposing party.   Even after the convention, that message can be strong — if the party is united, that is. The muddier things are, however, the less likely voters will be pushed in the ‘correct’ direction.”

“This is probably a big part of what has given Clinton a solid lead in the polls right now. The Democrats are united and sound united, while Republicans clearly are not.”
