Demographic Shifts for Clinton Are Overrated

September 14, 2016 at 9:28 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Nate Cohn: “So here’s a simple question: Why haven’t these demographics swept Hillary Clinton to a big polling lead and a smooth glide to victory? Donald J. Trump, after all, has alienated just about every growing demographic group and every category that helped push Mr. Obama to victory.”

“The biggest reason is that demographic change was an overrated contribution to Mr. Obama’s victory, and it will help Mrs. Clinton only at the margins this year. Analysts have conflated all of the effect of higher turnout and percentage of support among nonwhite voters with demographic shifts. In truth, the turnout and support were far more powerful components.”

Bonus Quote of the Day

September 14, 2016 at 9:26 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“I don’t know folks, do you think Hillary Clinton would be able to stand up here for an hour? I don’t know.”

— Donald Trump, quoted by the Daily Beast, finally breaking four days of near silence about Hillary Clinton’s health.

Is Trump Just Campaigning Better?

September 14, 2016 at 9:24 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Josh Barro: “Obviously, it’s been a rough few weeks for Hillary Clinton, and most of the poll analysis has focused on how she has hurt herself and what she can do to improve her position.”

“But here’s the thought that’s making me nervous: What if the shift in the polls is more about Donald Trump campaigning better?”

“Specifically, what if it’s about the fact that he brought in a reasonably competent campaign manager, Kellyanne Conway, on August 17, started listening to her advice, and became somewhat less self-destructive and more on-message?”

Even Trump’s Charity Is a Scam

September 14, 2016 at 9:15 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

A Washington Post editorial:

“Mr. Trump has cultivated the persona of a generous man, repeatedly claiming on television he would donate to charity “out of my wallet” and accepting honors from groups he appeared to support. In fact, an exhaustive investigation by Post reporter David A. Fahrenthold shows that Mr. Trump retooled his foundation about a decade ago to act as an intermediary for other people’s charitable giving, a racket from which Mr. Trump gained in reputation and from which he may even have occasionally profited.”

“Mr. Trump does not appear to have given his own money to the Trump Foundation since 2008, and by then Trump funds had become a tiny slice of the organization’s revenue. Since then, the available records suggest, a charitable group that bears the billionaire’s name has been funded by others. That has not stopped Mr. Trump from claiming credit for doling out other people’s cash.”

Trump Checkup Said to Reveal He Is Overweight

September 14, 2016 at 6:32 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“After a whiplash-inducing morning of mixed messages, Donald Trump on Wednesday opened a small window into some of the results from his most recent physical examination, revealing that he is overweight and takes a statin, a type of drug that lowers cholesterol,” the New York Times reports.

“Mr. Trump gave the quick synopsis on Dr. Mehmet Oz’s television show after the Republican presidential nominee’s aides had said that he would, then that he would not, broach the topic with the doctor on the show.”

“A Trump aide said that Dr. Oz, who focuses heavily on obesity, declared Mr. Trump ‘slightly overweight’ with a weight of 236 pounds (although earlier reports put his weight at 267 pounds.)”

Quote of the Day

September 14, 2016 at 2:33 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Political probabilities are not like blackjack. There is only one roll of the dice, and 35% probability events happen frequently in real life.”

— Citigroup’s chief global political analyst Tina Fordham, quoted by Fox Business, warning that a “35% probability for a Trump victory is more meaningful than investors may be appreciating.”

Powell Called Cheney an Idiot

September 14, 2016 at 2:03 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Former Secretary of State Colin Powell slammed Dick Cheney in private emails seen by BuzzFeed News.

Said Powell, about the former vice president’s book written with his daughter, Liz: “They are idiots and spent force peddling a book that ain’t going nowhere.”

“The email, to Kenneth Duberstein — the former White House chief of staff to President Ronald Regan — was about the Cheneys’ September 2015 book, Exceptional: Why the World Needs a Powerful America.”

In another story, Powell slammed Donald Trump’s closest military adviser, retired Gen. Michael Flynn, in an email as “right-wing nutty” and “a jerl.”

Suddenly, Trump Has Several Paths to Victory

September 14, 2016 at 1:58 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Ed Kilgore: “But it is clear that if he can move Pennsylvania — a ‘blue’ state that has been trending ‘red’ and where the demographics offer him some strategic avenues — into the hypercompetitive category, then all things are possible for him.”

“It is possible, in fact, that Trump is opening up multiple paths to victory. Recent polling in both New Hampshire and Colorado — two states generally conceded earlier to be in Clinton’s pocket — is showing a decided tightening of the race. There’s also fresh evidence Trump could win in the second congressional district of Maine, which independently awards a single electoral vote. There is one scenario where even if Trump loses Pennsylvania he could get to 270 votes via New Hampshire and that 1 vote from Maine.”

The Obama Coalition Isn’t Coming Together — Yet

Following up on my earlier note on young voters, David Plouffe — the key architect of the “Obama coalition” that included young voters — had some similar thoughts in a really interesting MSNBC interview last night.

Keeping Trump Quiet May Be Key to Closing Gap

September 14, 2016 at 11:34 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Republicans have may finally hit on the one easy trick to making their presidential nominee palatable: Minimize the words emerging from Donald Trump’s mouth that aren’t written ahead of time by somebody else,” the Huffington Post reports.

“Since his most recent campaign shakeup last month, Trump has not held a news conference, has cut back on in-depth Sunday show appearances and has almost completely eliminated speeches that aren’t scripted and displayed on his teleprompter screens.”

“Nevertheless, if recent polls are accurate, the plan does seem to be working: Voters are responding better to Trump talking more like a generic Republican than they did to Trump talking like Trump.”

Clinton Has Huge Swing State Lead with Latinos

September 14, 2016 at 11:31 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

A new Univision poll of Latino voters in Arizona, Colorado, Florida and Nevada shows Hillary Clinton trouncing Donald Trump among this critical voting bloc.

In Florida, Trump trails Clinton by 24 percentage points — the closest margin out of the four states. Clinton leads Trump 68% to 18% in Arizona, 65% to 19% in Nevada and 62% to 17% in Colorado.

Florida, Colorado and Nevada are three battleground states where Latinos are likely to make up more than 10% of the electorate this year.

Johnson Will Be On Ballot In Every State

September 14, 2016 at 10:01 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Gary Johnson’s campaign said “that he will be on the ballot in all 50 states plus the District of Columbia, marking the first time in two decades a third-party presidential ticket has appeared on every state ballot,” the Wall Street Journal reports.

Trump Won’t Release Health Info on Dr. Oz Show

September 14, 2016 at 9:59 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“If viewers of Donald Trump’s appearance on ‘The Dr. Oz Show’ are expecting a big reveal about Trump’s physical fitness, they are going to be disappointed. Oz will not be reviewing the results of Trump’s recent physical,” campaign spokeswoman Hope Hicks told CNN.

“That contradicts a claim made on Fox News Tuesday. The Trump campaign now says it will likely release later this week information based on a physical exam Trump underwent last week.”

Washington Post: “Trump’s appearance on Oz’s TV show now sounds like a pure PR stunt designed to hype the candidate’s fitness, regardless of what his physician might have found. It sounds like a total joke.”

Pressure Grows on Trump to Release His Taxes

September 14, 2016 at 9:55 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

First Read: “With less than eight until Election Day, it looks like Donald Trump will be successful in not releasing his tax returns, becoming the first presidential nominee we can remember not doing so. But it’s becoming harder and harder for him to avoid releasing them.”

“First is the news that New York’s Democratic attorney general has launched an inquiry into the Trump Foundation… Second was the Washington Post’s investigative piece noting that most of the Trump Foundation money comes from other people’s money; that Trump passes the money to other charities and takes credit for it; and that he has used that money to buy himself a gift. (“One candidate’s family foundation has saved countless lives around the world,” President Obama said on the campaign trail yesterday. “The other candidate’s foundation took money other people gave to his charity and then bought a six-foot-tall painting of himself.”) And third is a new Newsweek article detailing how Trump’s international business ties could become a significant conflict of interest if he becomes president.”

“Any conventional politician would be feeling the heat here; of course, Trump isn’t your conventional politician. But every day that goes by with Trump not releasing his taxes suggests that these is something to all of these stories.”
