The Brilliance of Clinton’s ‘Deplorables’ Comment

September 13, 2016 at 7:35 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Byron York: “Could there be a clunkier phrase than ‘basket of deplorables’? Hillary Clinton’s assertion that half — or maybe something less than half — of Donald Trump’s supporters are ‘racist, sexist, homophobic, xenophobic, Islamophobic, you name it’ struck a lot of observers as not just an odd turn of phrase but politically unwise. You attack your opponent, the idea was, but you don’t attack the voters.”

“But now, a few days later, the brilliance of Clinton’s remark is becoming clearer. Yes, she got a few liberal commentators to take her side and defend the substance of it. But the far bigger benefit is that in the wake of her comment, some media figures decided to devise a ‘deplorables’ quiz for Trump supporters. Is Person X deplorable? How about Person Y? The effect was to pressure Trump supporters not only to agree with Clinton’s larger point but with her precise terminology.”

Clinton’s Narrow Lead Is Bigger Than It Looks

September 13, 2016 at 7:32 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Stuart Rothenberg: “So, the next time you see media reports that Florida or Ohio is ‘close’ or that Pennsylvania is ‘tightening,’ you should not be surprised. They are narrowly divided states where it is difficult for one party to blow out the other in a competitive federal election.”

“But being ‘close’ isn’t the same thing as saying a state is a ‘toss up’ or both candidates have the same chance of winning it.”

“And because of that, the Clinton-Trump race can be both ‘competitive’ and even ‘close’ in a state and nationally, but at the same time clearly favor one nominee – in this case Clinton.”

Bevin Says Clinton Election Might Require Shedding Blood

September 13, 2016 at 7:28 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Kentucky Gov. Matt Bevin (R) says patriots might have to shed blood to “reclaim” America if Hillary Clinton is elected:

Whose blood will be shed? It may be that of those in this room. It might be that of our children and grandchildren. I have nine children. It breaks my heart to think that it might be their blood that is needed to redeem something, to reclaim something, that we through our apathy and our indifference have given away.

Gingrich Says More Clinton Medical Reports Don’t Count

September 13, 2016 at 7:11 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Newt Gingrich is already discrediting Hillary Clinton’s promised released of additional medical documents, Politico reports.

Said Gingrich: “I don’t think us getting a doctor’s report is going to count because the doctors have not been forthcoming and haven’t been open to the press asking questions.”

Clinton’s National Lead Narrows

September 13, 2016 at 7:05 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

A new NBC News-SurveyMonkey poll finds Hillary Clinton leading Donald Trump by four points nationally, 48% to 44%.

In a four-way race, Clinton leads Trump by just two points, 42% to 40%, followed by Gary Johnson at 11% and Jill Stein at 4%.

Were Debate Moderators Chosen to Appease Trump?

September 12, 2016 at 10:45 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Politico: “Although that executive said Trump asks for specific anchors or moderators less than others, the GOP nominee is clear about which ones he prefers. It’s hard to envision Trump agreeing to last week’s NBC forum were Rachel Maddow or Chuck Todd asking the questions. And there is wide speculation among media executives that NBC’s Lester Holt, who Trump is comfortable with, was chosen to moderate the first debate with Clinton later this month in order to appease the GOP nominee. Similarly, some also believe that Fox News’ Chris Wallace was tapped to moderate the third and final debate to lessen the chance that Trump would skip it.”

Trump Campaign Can’t Prove Claims of Charity

September 12, 2016 at 10:37 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“A spokeswoman for Donald Trump’s presidential campaign, seeking to rebut criticism of the GOP nominee’s history of charitable giving, said that Trump has given away ‘tens of millions of dollars’ over his life,” the Washington Post reports.

“But spokeswoman Hope Hicks offered no details about that number, beyond saying that it included donations from the Donald Trump Foundation — a charity that, despite its name, has been filled almost entirely with other people’s money in recent years.”

Clinton Kept Illness from All But a Few

September 12, 2016 at 10:33 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Washington Post: “The Democratic nominee’s decision to not widely disclose her illness and ignore her doctor’s advice to get rest set in motion perhaps the most damaging cascade of events for her in the general-election campaign — giving fresh ammunition to Republican nominee Donald Trump before their first debate.”

New York Times: “Mrs. Clinton’s inner circle was mindful of both her guardedness and her expectation of loyalty once her mind is made up. And she was optimistic that she could recover over the weekend, when she had only two brief events on her schedule, said the advisers and allies, who insisted on anonymity to disclose private conversations.”

“But Mrs. Clinton’s penchant for privacy backfired. On Monday, her campaign scrambled to reassure voters about her health, a day after she grew visibly weak and was filmed being helped into a van: unsettling images that circulated widely and led her aides to disclose the pneumonia diagnosis two days after the fact.”

Trump Seizes on Clinton’s Absence

September 12, 2016 at 10:31 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Donald Trump “hurled himself into a new effort to reshape the presidential race on Monday, scrambling to allay voters’ concerns about his temperament and put Hillary Clinton on the defensive over her critical comments about many of Mr. Trump’s supporters,” the New York Times reports.

“Though Mr. Trump, the Republican nominee, has largely withheld comment about Mrs. Clinton’s health, showing uncharacteristic restraint after her campaign announced she had pneumonia, he took Mrs. Clinton’s unexpected absence from public view as an opportunity to press his case with ferocity.”

“Among Mr. Trump’s advisers, there is a sense of urgency. With eight weeks left in the race — and just two before his first debate with Mrs. Clinton, the Democratic nominee — Mr. Trump may never again have such a window to make his argument to voters more or less uninterrupted.”

North Carolina Loses NCAA Tournament

September 12, 2016 at 10:00 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Since the North Carolina legislature last March passed House Bill 2, a controversial law restricting transgender bathroom access and limiting the civil rights and bathroom usage of the LGBT community, the state has lost the NBA All-Star Game, Bruce Springsteen and other concerts and conventions and an untold amount of revenue,” the Raleigh News & Observer reports.

“Now North Carolina is losing the NCAA tournament. The NCAA announced on Monday that the seven championships scheduled in the state during this academic year, including NCAA men’s basketball tournament games in Greensboro, would be relocated because of House Bill 2, better known as HB2.”

Electoral Map Has a Growing Democratic Bias

September 12, 2016 at 5:29 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“The presidential election map is undergoing a fundamental change, with shifts that will make it easier for Democrats to win not only in 2016 but also for years to come,” McClatchy reports.

“Driving the change are two demographic trends: The share of Hispanic and under-30 voters, who favor Democrats in big numbers, is growing significantly in states that in the last decade were decent bets to vote Republican.”

“Colorado, Nevada and Pennsylvania illustrate how the demographic changes are giving Hillary Clinton an electoral advantage Democrats are unlikely to lose anytime soon. Clinton leads in Pennsylvania and Colorado, which for years were regarded as swing states, and she has a polling edge in Nevada.”

Trump Says Fed Is Part of a Partisan Conspiracy

September 12, 2016 at 4:39 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

In May, Donald Trump thought the Federal Reserve handled interest rates exactly right, NBC News reports.

Said Trump: “Right now I am for low interest rates, and I think we keep them low.”

Today, he said Fed chair Janet Yellen’s interest rate decisions proved she was “obviously not independent” and is out to help Democrats: “It’s staying at zero because she’s obviously political and she’s doing what Obama wants her to do. And I know that’s not supposed to be the way it is, but that’s why it’s low.”

Nate Silver Gave Paid Presentation to GOP Donors

September 12, 2016 at 3:14 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Nate Silver gave a presentation on the 2016 battleground map to a group of powerful Republican donors in Manhattan last week, The Hill reports.

“Silver was paid to give the presentation by the American Opportunity Alliance, a group led by some of the biggest Republican donors in the country, including hedge fund billionaire Paul Singer and the Ricketts family, which owns the Chicago Cubs.”

Trump Foundation Made Phantom Donations

September 12, 2016 at 2:34 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Five times, the Trump Foundation’s tax filings described giving a specific amount of money to a specific charity — in some cases, even including the recipient’s address. But when the Washington Post called, the charities listed said the tax filings appeared wrong. They’d never received anything from Trump or his foundation.”

Clinton CIA Chief Backs Trump

September 12, 2016 at 1:52 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Bill Clinton’s former CIA chief, James Woolsey, will act as an adviser to Donald Trump’s campaign, The Hill reports.

Said Woolsey: “She demonstrated a complete lack of understanding and an inability to lead the agency she headed in such a way as to maintain its mission and security. Based on the emails thus far released we know that Secretary Clinton also lacks the ability to lead her senior managers while complying with and maintaining the basic protocols designed to protect our government’s sensitive and classified information.”

GOP Lawmaker Doubts Clinton Has Pneumonia

September 12, 2016 at 1:49 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Rep. Gary Palmer (R-AL) told WAPI that he doubts whether Hillary Clinton’s campaign is being honest when they revealed on Sunday that the Democratic nominee has pneumonia.

Said Palmer: “They’ve tried to attribute the cough to bronchitis, they’ve tried to attribute it to pneumonia, but I sat in the Benghazi hearing for three hours. And she sat there and coughed her way through that. You know, again, you just look at the pattern and it just begs the question, are we being lied to again?”
