Does Trump Want to Lose?

June 12, 2016 at 9:14 am EDT By Taegan Goddard 67 Comments

Carl Cannon: “I’ve only met the man once, and if one of my friends wrote this column, I’d tease him about going all Gail Sheehy — I don’t usually cotton to journalists who psychoanalyze their subjects. But I believe that Donald Trump, the man who famously disparages ‘losers,’ knows deep down he isn’t equipped to be president.”

“Let’s call this more reflective subconscious entity ‘Don Trump.'”

“Donald Trump loves winning and hates losing, while Don Trump knows that running a smart campaign and beating Hillary Clinton means he’d inherit a job he has neither the qualifications nor the temperament to perform successfully. Don Trump wants to lose. He wants this campaign to be over so Donald Trump can go back to doing what he’s good at: promoting his personal brand and counting his money.”

Extra Bonus Quote of the Day

June 11, 2016 at 7:00 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard 132 Comments

“With President Trump, I’m ready to get off defense and go on offense. Trump is going to slaughter some sacred cows, and I’m ready for the barbecue.”

— Rep. Brent Farenthold (R-TX), quoted by the Austin American-Statesman.

Plouffe Says Trump Is Lazy

June 11, 2016 at 5:04 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard 86 Comments

Former Obama campaign manager David Plouffe said that Donald Trump needs to stop being “lazy” if he wants to win, Politico reports.

Said Plouffe: “It’s so offensive as a practitioner. Get on your plane and go to Ohio. It’s not that complicated … I think he’s actually quite lazy. He’s lazy.”

GOP Senator Prays Obama’s Days Will Be Few

June 11, 2016 at 4:37 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard 123 Comments

Sen. David Perdue (R-GA) joked at a conservative Christian event that he prays President Obama’s days will be “few,” the Huffington Post reports.

Said Perdue: “We should pray like Psalms 109:8 says. It says: ‘Let his days be few and let another have his office.'”

Perdue did not continue, but Psalm 109 is a death wish for one of David’s enemies.

It continues: “Let his children be fatherless; and his wife a widow. Let his children wander about and beg; and let them seek sustenance far from their ruined homes. Let the creditor seize all that he has; and let strangers plunder the product of his labor. Let there be none to extend lovingkindness to him; nor any to be gracious to his fatherless children. Let his posterity be cut off; in a following generation let their name be blotted out.“

Bonus Quote of the Day

June 11, 2016 at 4:04 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard 62 Comments

“These things are personal. I love this country. I love the founders, I love what this country is built upon and its values, and seeing this is breaking my heart, for the party that means so much.”

— Mitt Romney, quoted by ABC News, “choking up and blinking back tears” explaining why he cannot back Donald Trump for president.

Trump Has a Very Unlikely Path to Win

June 11, 2016 at 3:04 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard 133 Comments

Associated Press: “In the dozen or so states most likely to determine the race, Trump has made little progress building a campaign operation to match Clinton’s sophisticated get-out-the-vote machine. At the same time, he’s created new problems in Florida, Colorado and Nevada with comments that Republican leaders decry as racist.”

“There is a path for the billionaire real estate mogul and reality TV star to find his way to 270. But it’s narrow, given the map’s opening tilt toward the Democratic Party, and hinges on Trump’s ability to continue to defy political norms.”

“Trump will need to turn out white voters in the Upper Midwest in numbers that far exceed those in past presidential elections. Even if that happens, he’s still likely to need to convince women in swing-voting suburbs that he has the temperament to be commander in chief. And he must stop his party from losing more ground among minorities, particularly Hispanics.”

Texas ‘Victory Chairman’ Won’t Back Trump

June 11, 2016 at 12:32 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard 40 Comments

Texas Land Commissioner George P. Bush (R) was named the party’s 2016 “victory chairman,” charged with raising money and running the statewide campaign to “annihilate the Democrats up-and-down the ballot this November,” the Austin American-Statesman reports.

“No matter that Donald Trump, who humiliated Bush’s father, Jeb, as ‘low energy,’ during the rough and tumble GOP presidential race, will presumably be topping the ticket, and that neither Jeb Bush, nor George P. Bush’s uncle, former President George W. Bush, nor his grandfather, former President George H.W. Bush, plan to back Trump.”

George P. Bush said he doesn’t plan to endorse or even vote for Trump either.

Does Google Favor Hillary Clinton?

June 11, 2016 at 12:25 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard 87 Comments

“Google battled accusations that it manipulates its predicted-searches function to favor Hillary Clinton, the latest dust-up over the influence large tech companies exert in modern life,” the Wall Street Journal reports.

“Pop-culture news website SourceFed posted a video Thursday alleging that Google’s autocomplete service, which tries to predict queries as users type, is biased toward Mrs. Clinton, the presumptive Democratic presidential nominee.”

Donald Trump was quoted by Business Insider: “If this is true, it is a disgrace that Google would do that. Very, very dishonest.”

Trump Will Feature Sports Stars at Convention

June 11, 2016 at 9:39 am EDT By Taegan Goddard 145 Comments

Donald Trump “has some ideas for how to jazz up the Republican National Convention, and he previewed one at a rally on Friday evening: a ‘winner’s evening’ of sports celebrities and champions addressing the convention rather than politicians,” the New York Times reports.

He said he wanted to have them all address the convention as examples of “winners,” rather than “these people, these politicians who are going to get up and speak and speak and speak.”

RNC Website Doesn’t Mention Trump

June 11, 2016 at 9:30 am EDT By Taegan Goddard 80 Comments

Steven Benen: “The RNC’s homepage has two pictures of Hillary Clinton, but zero of Trump. Click on the ‘View All Articles’ link for the latest RNC blog posts and press releases, and you’ll find plenty of content, but of the top 20 items, 19 attacked Hillary Clinton, while one attacked President Obama. Here, too, there wasn’t a single Trump mention.”

“If you didn’t know anything about politics and you stumbled onto the RNC’s site, you might think the election were some kind of referendum on whether or not Clinton deserves support, rather than a choice between competing candidates.”

Texas County GOP Strips New Chairman of Power

June 11, 2016 at 9:12 am EDT By Taegan Goddard 49 Comments

The Travis County, TX Republican Party voted to move the party’s cash and social media accounts to a newly-formed political committee to keep them out of incoming chairman Robert Morrow’s hands during his two-year tenure, the Austin American-Statesman reports.

During the debate, Morrow tweeted a statement on what the party’s “top priority” will be when he is chairman: large female breasts.

June 11, 2016 at 8:22 am EDT By Taegan Goddard 112 Comments

Quote of the Day

June 11, 2016 at 8:03 am EDT By Taegan Goddard 54 Comments

“There’s no question in my mind, he will never release his tax returns. He will follow one excuse after another to say why he can’t.”

— Mitt Romney, quoted by The Hill, insisting there is a “bombshell” in Donald Trump’s tax returns.

Trump Took Clinton’s Twitter Bait

June 11, 2016 at 7:56 am EDT By Taegan Goddard 42 Comments

Politico: “Clinton’s team also prepared a Twitter trap for her rival last week, when she delivered a blistering speech in San Diego that denounced Trump’s worldview as a series of ‘bizarre rants, personal feuds, and outright lies.’ When Trump tweeted that she was telling tall tales — ‘She made up things that I said or believe but have no basis in fact. Not honest!’ — her account dryly responded, ‘You literally said all those things,’ linking to a page that listed dozens of Trump’s statements on topics like torture, terrorism, Mexico, Russia and the pope.”

“According to the Clinton campaign, her tweet was viewed more than 2 million times.”

Alabama Speaker Convicted of 12 Felony Counts

June 11, 2016 at 7:31 am EDT By Taegan Goddard 16 Comments

Alabama House Speaker Michael Hubbard (R), “whose sharp-elbowed approach to politics propelled the Republican Party to dominance in his state, was convicted Friday on 12 felony ethics charges, leaving him stripped of power and facing the possibility of decades in prison,” the New York Times reports.

“The verdict…deepened the political crisis in Alabama, where some of the most influential state officials are facing inquiries and threats of ouster.”
