It’s Trump’s Republican Party Now

June 3, 2016 at 8:53 am EDT By Taegan Goddard 55 Comments

First Read: “On March 3, Mitt Romney delivered his own blistering speech on Donald Trump, which used some of the same lines of attack that Hillary Clinton included in her anti-Trump address yesterday… But today — exactly three months ago since that speech — Trump’s takeover of the Republican Party is now complete, especially after House Speaker Paul Ryan (Romney’s 2012 running mate) endorsed the real-estate mogul. Ryan tried to give himself distance by withholding his endorsement for 29 days after Trump became the GOP’s presumptive nominee, particularly given their differences over immigration, entitlements, trade, and Trump’s Muslim ban.”

“But it’s hard to disagree with this take from the Cook Political Report‘s David Wasserman: ‘Speaker Paul Ryan endorses nominee who wants to ban Muslims from the country. The hostile takeover of the GOP is now complete.'”

Hiring Suddenly Slows Down

June 3, 2016 at 8:49 am EDT By Taegan Goddard 68 Comments

Wall Street Journal: “U.S. companies slowed their hiring drastically in May and unemployment fell as people dropped out of the labor force, a bleak picture for Federal Reserve officials as they prepare to debate increasing short-term interest rates at a policy meeting this month.”

“Nonfarm payrolls rose by a seasonally adjusted 38,000 in May, the weakest performance since September 2010… Revisions showed employers added a combined 59,000 fewer jobs in April and March than previously estimated.”

Trump Will Meet with Scott Amid Veep Speculation

June 3, 2016 at 8:35 am EDT By Taegan Goddard 70 Comments

Florida Gov. Rick Scott (R) “will travel to New York to meet with presumptive Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump on Monday as Trump begins plotting his general election campaign in Florida,” the Washington Post reports.

“While the meeting is about strategy, according to a Scott aide, it could also stoke speculation about Trump’s vice presidential selection process. Scott, who endorsed Trump in March, has said he is not interested in being the mogul’s running mate. Nevertheless, their warm relationship makes him a name to watch.”

Quote of the Day

“Donald Trump will peel her skin off in a debate setting. And actually he’ll peel it off this evening.”

— Former Texas Gov. Rick Perry (R), on Fox News, reacting to Hillary Clinton’s speech eviscerating Trump’s foreign policy.

June 3, 2016 at 7:20 am EDT By Taegan Goddard 125 Comments

Trump Now Tries Wooing Martinez

June 3, 2016 at 7:09 am EDT By Taegan Goddard 92 Comments

“In a stunning reversal of rhetoric and tone, Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump said he respects New Mexico Gov. Susana Martinez (R) and wants her endorsement. Trump’s comments in a phone interview with the New Mexican came just days after he castigated Martinez in front of 8,000 people in Albuquerque, saying her job performance was so poor that he might have to run for governor of New Mexico.”

Said Trump: “I’d like to have it. I respect her. I have always liked her.”

Protesters Clash Outside Trump Event

June 3, 2016 at 7:05 am EDT By Taegan Goddard 47 Comments

“With escalating vitriol, Donald Trump unleashed an attack on Hillary Clinton on Thursday in response to her speech earlier in the day criticizing his foreign policy positions,” the New York Times reports.

“Outside the event, protesters, some brandishing Mexican flags, clashed violently with Mr. Trump’s supporters. Videos taken at the scene showed a number of physical confrontations. In one, a supporter wearing a football jersey emblazoned with Mr. Trump’s name was pelted with eggs. Another showed an unsuspecting man being surrounded by protesters and punched in the face.”

GOP Groups Not Spending on Kirk

June 3, 2016 at 7:01 am EDT By Taegan Goddard 13 Comments

RealClearPolitics: “Republican outside groups have spent tens of millions of dollars in competitive Senate races this year, eager to protect GOP incumbents in a difficult cycle with the chamber’s majority up for grabs. But as that spending has ramped up in recent weeks, next to none has gone to bolster Illinois Sen. Mark Kirk, widely viewed as the most vulnerable of them all.”

Rove Privately Meets with Trump

June 3, 2016 at 7:00 am EDT By Taegan Goddard 12 Comments

New York Times: “Karl Rove, the architect of George W. Bush’s victorious presidential campaigns and founder of a constellation of political fund-raising groups, has called Donald Trump ‘a complete idiot.’ He has described him as ‘graceless and divisive.’ He has said Mr. Trump’s boasts about beating Hillary Clinton in the polls are false.”

“Mr. Trump has reacted with anger to such insults, calling Mr. Rove ‘sad’ and questioning his record of success.”

“But two weeks ago, Mr. Trump and Mr. Rove held a private meeting just as the presumptive Republican nominee was courting major party figures.”

Democrats Mull How to Push Sanders Out

June 3, 2016 at 6:59 am EDT By Taegan Goddard 41 Comments

CNN: “In private conversations on Capitol Hill, senior Democrats are weighing how to persuade Sanders to step aside without appearing as if they are trying to strong-arm him out of the race. In a phone call last month, Senate Minority Leader Harry Reid made the case to Sanders why it would make sense for him to leave the race after New Jersey and California vote on June 7, according to sources familiar with the conversation.”
“Senators and aides say they’ve felt reassured after recent discussions with Sanders and his advisers that he won’t be a destructive force once voting concludes in mid-June. But Sanders has publicly vowed to take his fight to Philadelphia, something that could deprive the party of a critical month of healing and has spawned fears of unrest at the July nominating convention.”
Los Angeles Times: Who gives money to Bernie Sanders?

Clinton Eviscerates Trump In Speech

June 2, 2016 at 4:20 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard 329 Comments

Hillary Clinton lambasted Donald Trump’s foreign policy platform as “dangerously incoherent,” Reuters reports.

She attacked Trump for both his policies and his character, suggesting Trump might start a nuclear war simply because “someone got under his very thin skin.”

Vox: “This wasn’t the restrained, diplomatic Clinton we’ve seen for most of the campaign. This was full-on firebrand, full of righteous rage at the idea that someone like Donald Trump could possibly be president of the United States.”

Chuck Todd: “This speech and overall performance by Clinton is going to quiet the DC-based bed wetters for a bit. Her best campaign moment in months.”

— Former Secretary of State James Baker, in an interview with the Financial Times, about her tenure at the State Department.

Paul Ryan Endorses Trump

June 2, 2016 at 3:23 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard 91 Comments

Writing in the Janesville Gazette, Speaker Paul Ryan declared his support for Donald Trump as president.

Donald Trump and I have talked at great length… But the House policy agenda has been the main focus of our dialogue. We’ve talked about the common ground this agenda can represent. We’ve discussed how the House can be a driver of policy ideas. We’ve talked about how important these reforms are to saving our country. And we’ve talked about how, by focusing on issues that unite Republicans, we can work together to heal the fissures developed through the primary.

Through these conversations, I feel confident he would help us turn the ideas in this agenda into laws to help improve people’s lives. That’s why I’ll be voting for him this fall.

Trump Thinks He Can Win California

June 2, 2016 at 2:10 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard 84 Comments

Donald Trump “is the only candidate left in the Republican primary, yet his campaign schedule is adhering fairly closely to the primary calendar, with him spending the second part of last week and the rest of this week holding rallies across California, which votes on Tuesday,” the New York Times reports.

Said Trump: “Sacramento, we’re going to do something. Because I’m going to make a real run in California, all right? We’re going to work California hard.”

Why ‘Missing’ White Voters Won’t Help Trump

June 2, 2016 at 12:55 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard 39 Comments

David Wasserman: “The good news for Trump is that nationally, there’s plenty of room for white turnout to improve. If non-Hispanic whites had turned out at the same rate in 2012 that they did in 1992, there would have been 8.8 million additional white voters — far more than Obama’s 5 million-vote margin of victory. But before Democrats panic, here’s the catch, and it’s a doozy for Trump: These ‘missing’ white voters disproportionately live in states that won’t matter in a close presidential race.”
