Trump Makes Money By Running for President

May 18, 2016 at 8:49 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard 17 Comments

“Business has boomed in Donald Trump’s financial empire during the time he has run for president, according to an analysis of his federal disclosure forms,” the Washington Post reports.

“The documents, including a lengthy filing released Wednesday and one from last July, show that revenue has increased by almost $190 million, with gains coming from golf courses to branded merchandise to book royalties.”

“The flood of cash highlights one of the most unusual aspects of Trump’s candidacy — the potential that a private businessman can benefit financially from a run for the White House. And it shows how his fortunes have evolved since last year, when his controversial comments about immigration and Muslims threatened to tarnish his business brand even if they boosted his political campaign.”

Whistlestop

This looks good: Whistlestop: My Favorite Stories from Presidential Campaign History by John Dickerson.

“These are human stories full of drama and switchbacks, nervous gambits hatched in first floor hotel rooms, failures of will before the microphone and the crack up of long-planned stratagems.”

Former Massachusetts Gov. William Weld (R) will announce plans to seek the Libertarian Party’s vice presidential nomination.

Weld met with former New Mexico Gov. Gary Johnson (R), the party’s candidate for president, over the weekend.

Said Johnson: “We got together and shook hands on it. It brings an enormous amount of credibility to what it is I’m doing. I’m unbelievably flattered by this and humbled.”

Why Trump Uses Twitter

May 18, 2016 at 2:35 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard 53 Comments

Donald Trump told the New York Times he often checks his Twitter feed when he feels the passing urge to “knock the crap out of” somebody.

Romney No Longer Searching for Trump Alternative

May 18, 2016 at 2:10 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard 43 Comments

Mitt Romney is no longer engaged in an effort to recruit a third-party candidate to run against Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton, Yahoo News reports.

Rendell Says ‘Ugly Women’ Will Have Last Word

May 18, 2016 at 1:46 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard 136 Comments

Former Pennsylvania Gov. Ed Rendell (D) says Donald Trump’s past comments on women will likely come back to haunt him because Rendell says “there are probably more ugly women in America than attractive women,” the AP reports.

Trump Unveils List of Supreme Court Nominees

May 18, 2016 at 1:11 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard 40 Comments

Donald Trump has released a list of 11 potential Supreme Court justices he plans to vet to fill the seat of late Justice Antonin Scalia, the AP reports.

“Trump’s picks include Steven Colloton of Iowa, Allison Eid of Colorado and Raymond Gruender of Missouri. Also on the list are: Thomas Hardiman of Pennsylvania, Raymond Kethledge of Michigan, Joan Larsen of Michigan, Thomas Lee of Utah, William Pryor of Alabama, David Stras of Minnesota, Diane Sykes of Wisconsin and Don Willett of Texas.”

In Defense of a Bad Forecast

May 18, 2016 at 11:24 am EDT By Taegan Goddard 86 Comments

Nate Silver: “Trump is one of the most astonishing stories in American political history. If you really expected the Republican front-runner to be bragging about the size of his anatomy in a debate, or to be spending his first week as the presumptive nominee feuding with the Republican speaker of the House and embroiled in a controversy over a tweet about a taco salad, then more power to you.”

“Since relatively few people predicted Trump’s rise, however, I want to think through his nomination while trying to avoid the seduction of hindsight bias. What should we have known about Trump and when should we have known it?”

Which Party Will Have a Contested Convention?

May 18, 2016 at 10:16 am EDT By Taegan Goddard 444 Comments

Rick Klein: “The one that has a second candidate vowing to fight to the end, to change the minds of delegates? The one that includes a campaign that sued the national party – not a threat, an actual lawsuit – claiming favoritism for a rival? The one that witnessed violent disruptions at a state party gathering, so bad that the state party is warning the national party about national convention violence? It is now overwhelmingly clear that the Democratic side of the race will not wind itself down into peace and togetherness. It is now conceivable, and perhaps probable, that the scene in Philadelphia is more raucous – and less glamorous – than the scene in Cleveland this summer.”

“Bernie Sanders shouldn’t be blamed for all that his supporters do and say, though neither is he blameless. His talk of a political revolution continues, and the strong suggestion he leaves voters with is less about Hillary Clinton’s qualifications than about the legitimacy of the Democratic Party’s nominating process.”

Trump’s Late Start

May 18, 2016 at 10:12 am EDT By Taegan Goddard 24 Comments

First Read: “Donald Trump last night reached a joint fundraising agreement with the Republican National Committee, allowing him to collect checks as large as $449,000 to benefit his campaign and party. But consider this: Hillary Clinton reached her own joint fundraising agreement with the DNC in August of 2015 — so almost a year ago. And when you throw in the fact that Trump just hired a pollster and that there still isn’t a designated pro-Trump Super PAC, you see how late of a general-election start Trump is getting, all less than six months before Election Day 2016.”

Roughly One In Five Would Vote for an Independent

May 18, 2016 at 8:55 am EDT By Taegan Goddard 47 Comments

A new Data Targeting poll finds that in a race against Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump, a generic independent candidate starts off with 21% of the vote.

This number increases to 29% in the “Big Sky” region, 30% in “New England” and 28% in the “West” region.

Bonus Quote of the Day

“Tighter than a Speedo on Chris Christie.”

— Paul Begala, quoted by the Daily Beast, describing the results of the Kentucky Democratic primary.

Just a Coincidence?

May 18, 2016 at 8:00 am EDT By Taegan Goddard 10 Comments

Donald Trump’s sister is judge whose court could rule on release of the Bridgegate “conspirator list” — the names of people who allegedly were involved, but not charged in the politically motivated George Washington Bridge lane closures of 2013 — in a possibly secret hearing the day before the New Jersey primary, according to reporter Matt Katz.

The Asbury Park Press reports “the disclosures, originally scheduled for Friday, were delayed after an unnamed person filed a last-ditch motion to prevent the release.”

Sanders Is Now Hurting Democrats

May 18, 2016 at 7:54 am EDT By Taegan Goddard 308 Comments

Josh Marshall: “Sanders is telling his supporters that he can still win, which he can’t. He’s suggesting that the win is being stolen by a corrupt establishment, an impression which will be validated when his phony prediction turns out not to be true. Lying like this sets you up for stuff like happened over the weekend in Nevada.”

Kevin Drum: “Before this campaign, he was a gadfly, he was a critic of the system, and he was a man of strong principles. He still is, but he’s also obviously very, very bitter… By all objective measures he did way better than anyone expected and had far more influence than anyone thought he would, and he should feel good about that. Instead, he seems more angry and resentful with every passing day.”

Tight Race In New Hampshire

May 18, 2016 at 6:53 am EDT By Taegan Goddard 37 Comments

A new WBUR poll in New Hampshire shows Hillary Clinton barely leading Donald Trump in the presidential race, 44% to 42%.

Key finding: Just 35% of New Hampshire voters have a positive view of Clinton; only 33% feel that way about Trump.

Quote of the Day

May 18, 2016 at 6:07 am EDT By Taegan Goddard 52 Comments

“I look so forward to debating Crooked Hillary Clinton! Democrat primaries are rigged, e-mail investigation is rigged — so time to get it on!”

— Donald Trump, in a tweet looking forward to the general election.
