Harry Reid’s Last Stand In Nevada

April 22, 2016 at 3:40 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard 18 Comments

Jon Ralston: “Nevada is a battleground state, with a significant role to play in the presidential race, a Senate seat that might determine whether Democrats regain control of that chamber and key congressional races that could make inroads in the GOP’s majority in the House. Reid, summoning all his considerable political muscle, is determined to erase the stain of 2014 and leave his stamp on his home state and the nation.”

“That no one who understands Nevada politics and who has studied Reid thinks this is impossible shows just how feared the minority leader remains, and just how determined he is. Reid will not be on the ballot in 2016, but he looms as large as ever over this election.”

Priebus Slams Never Trump Movement

April 22, 2016 at 1:38 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard 58 Comments

RNC Chairman Reince Priebus “called for Republicans to unite ahead of the presidential election, striking back against the Never Trump movement,” The Hill reports.

Said Priebus: “It is essential to victory in November that we all support our candidate. This goes for everyone, whether you’re a county party chairman, an RNC member, or a presidential candidate. Politics is a team sport, and we can’t win unless we rally around whoever becomes our nominee.”

Cruz Says Trump Is Just Another Washington Campaign

April 22, 2016 at 1:34 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard 27 Comments

Ted Cruz “intensified his rhetorical attacks on Donald Trump, attempting to tie the Republican front-runner’s recent campaign shake-up and hires to the Washington establishment that conservative voters oppose,” Politico reports.

Said Cruz: “His campaign manager is now a big-time Washington lobbyist. They’ve brought in tons of Washington lobbyists. This has become the Washington campaign.”

Why the ‘Stop Trump’ Effort Has Failed

April 22, 2016 at 9:03 am EDT By Taegan Goddard 25 Comments

This piece is only available to Political Wire members.

By almost any measure, Donald Trump should be an underdog in securing the 1,237 delegates necessary to win the Republican presidential nomination. But for some reason, the opposition to his candidacy is still bitterly divided, and in politics the side that is more divided almost always loses.

Indiana May Be Last Stand for Anti-Trump Forces

April 22, 2016 at 8:09 am EDT By Taegan Goddard 35 Comments

Washington Post: “With Trump poised to rack up more delegates in five Northeastern states on Tuesday, Indiana’s May 3 primary a week later is shaping up as a must-win for Texas Sen. Ted Cruz, who is attempting to win enough delegates to force a contested Republican convention. It also is one of the last, best chances for outside forces helping Cruz and Ohio Gov. John Kasich to slow the GOP front-runner.”

“As they have been in other states, the anti-Trump groups here are riven by divisions over strategy and tactics and limited in their financial resources. Indiana marks at least the fifth contest that opponents have declared as the moment to stop Trump, from the Iowa caucuses in February to the Wisconsin primary this month.”

Sanders Admits Tough Path to Nomination

April 22, 2016 at 8:05 am EDT By Taegan Goddard 279 Comments

Sen. Bernie Sanders told NBC News that his path to the Democratic nomination is “not unrealistic” but added: “It’s a hard path. I admit that.”

Said Sanders: “Look, if we do not have a majority, it’s going to be hard for us to win…. The only fact that I think remains uncertain is if we continue to be running significantly stronger than she is against Donald Trump, or whoever the Republican nominee will be. I think that’s a factor.”

GOP Delegates Get Threats from Trump Supporters

April 22, 2016 at 7:05 am EDT By Taegan Goddard 26 Comments

Politico: “The threats come months ahead of a possible contested convention, where Trump is all-but certain to enter with a plurality of delegates bound to him on the first ballot, but he could lose support on subsequent ballots as rules will allow delegates to vote however they choose. And although the harassers are typically anonymous, many party leaders on the receiving end of these threats hold Trump himself at least partly responsible, viewing the intimidation efforts as a natural and obvious outgrowth of the candidate’s incendiary rhetoric.”

Washington Examiner: “Delegates concede that social media harassment and an international media spotlight scrutinizing their every move — and vote — could impact decision making in Cleveland.”

GOP Candidates Already Vetting Running Mates

April 22, 2016 at 7:01 am EDT By Taegan Goddard 31 Comments

Washington Post: “Separate but simultaneous vetting processes are underway. Advisers to Sen. Ted Cruz of Texas and Ohio Gov. John Kasich said they are developing a list of prospects and researching their backgrounds. They are leaving open the possibility of announcing running mates as early as June, when primary voting concludes, or waiting until July at the Republican National Convention.”

“Front-runner Donald Trump said he is giving the choice of a running mate serious thought, but his campaign is holding off on vetting candidates until the nomination battle is over.”

Quote of the Day

April 22, 2016 at 6:58 am EDT By Taegan Goddard 32 Comments

“Fixing personality negatives is a lot easier than fixing character negatives. You can’t change somebody’s character, but you can change the way a person presents himself.”

— Paul Manafort, quoted by the Washington Post, on why Donald Trump can be a viable GOP nominee.

Cruz Struggles to Explain Rationale for Nomination

April 22, 2016 at 6:55 am EDT By Taegan Goddard 19 Comments

New York Times: “As he slogs through a merciless stretch of the primary calendar, straining to pick off delegates from Northeastern voters who seem disinclined to embrace his hard-line conservatism, Mr. Cruz, of Texas, has appeared increasingly frustrated amid questions about his path.”

“Mr. Cruz has struggled to formulate a concise argument rebutting Mr. Trump’s claim that the top vote-getter deserves the nomination, alternately citing the number of former Republican presidential hopefuls now supporting him, general election polls and Mr. Trump’s ‘hard ceiling’ of support.”

Trump Aide Pledges Toned Down Campaign

April 22, 2016 at 6:51 am EDT By Taegan Goddard 26 Comments

“Donald Trump’s newly installed campaign chief sought to assure members of the Republican National Committee on Thursday night that Mr. Trump recognized the need to reshape his persona and that his campaign would begin working with the political establishment that he has scorned to great effect,” the New York Times reports.

In fact, Paul Manafort bluntly suggested the candidate’s incendiary style amounted to an act.

Said Manafort: “That’s what’s important for you to understand: That he gets it, and that the part he’s been playing is evolving. The negatives are going to come down, the image is going to change, but Clinton is still going to be crooked Hillary.”

Republicans Begin Tangling Over Convention Rules

April 22, 2016 at 6:06 am EDT By Taegan Goddard 3 Comments

“The Republican Party has seen nearly all of its traditions and expectations upended by this year’s presidential campaign. Now, the party is under pressure to change even the most basic rules of the game,” the Wall Street Journal reports.

“Case in point: The spring meeting of the Republican National Committee, which wrangled over a proposal to make it harder for party elders at the July convention to anoint a ‘white knight’ candidate should delegates deadlock over businessman Donald Trump and Sen. Ted Cruz of Texas.”

“Thursday’s spat, tamped down by a voice vote, could be just the first in a string of disputes over usually arcane procedures and rules as the divided party heads into the final months of battle over choosing the GOP’s nominee. Already, party veterans are warning that the convention in July could end up entangled in legalistic skirmishes over who can serve as a delegate and how business will be conducted—details that could shape the battle for the nomination.”

Bonus Quote of the Day

April 21, 2016 at 5:14 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard 37 Comments

“We can’t take a chance that we’re accused of any monkey-business. Tricks. Stunts. Anything.”

— Florida Gov. Rick Scott (R), quoted by Politico, talking to RNC members about this summer’s convention.

Dead Heat In Indiana

April 21, 2016 at 4:36 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard 43 Comments

Politico has seen three different private polls of the Republican presidential race in Indiana.

One survey shows Ted Cruz and Donald Trump in a statistical tie, 32% to 32%, with John Kasich at 14%.

A second survey also had Trump and Cruz tied, a change from three weeks earlier when Cruz had led outside the margin of error.

A third survey had Trump ahead of Cruz, outside the margin of error.

April 21, 2016 at 4:31 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard 2 Comments

Fred Armisen and his former “Saturday Night Live” colleagues Bill Hader and Seth Meyers are planning a parody of the classic political documentary The War Room, called “The Bunker,” for cable channel IFC this fall, Politico reports.

Trump Vows to Include Abortion Exceptions In Platform

April 21, 2016 at 4:18 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard 60 Comments

Donald Trump would “absolutely” change the Republican Party’s platform on abortion to include exceptions for rape, incest and life of the mother, Politico reports.

Said Trump: “Yes, I would. Yes, I would. Absolutely. For the three exceptions, I would.”

Long Primary Comes at Big Cost to Clinton

April 21, 2016 at 4:14 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard 101 Comments

“Hillary Clinton has burned through tens of millions of dollars to counter Senator Bernie Sanders of Vermont in states that are unlikely to be general election battlegrounds, delaying any pivot to the general election and shrinking her potential financial advantage over the eventual Republican nominee,” the New York Times reports.

“While Mrs. Clinton has built a significant advantage in pledged delegates over Mr. Sanders in the Democratic nominating contest, her lead has come at a significant cost. She spent more than she raised in each of the first three months of the year, according to Federal Election Commission data, including more than $12 million on ads in March alone… Mrs. Clinton has spent at least $20 million on advertising in states like New York, Illinois and Massachusetts, money that could otherwise have been saved for the general election.”
