How Jeb Bush Blew Through $100 Million

January 28, 2016 at 5:55 am EST By Taegan Goddard 10 Comments

“There were stays at boutique hotels featuring rooftop pools, private soirees at members-only, jacket-and-tie clubs and fundraisers at the Four Seasons, the St. Regis and the Mandarin Oriental,” Reuters reports.

“In the world of Jeb Bush, the campaign for the 2016 Republican presidential nomination has at times been a whirl of private planes and high-end affairs, according to the federal filings of Bush’s campaign and his Super PAC, Right to Rise, which can raise unlimited funds for Bush as long as it does not coordinate directly with him.”

Roger Ailes Sent Statement Taunting Trump

January 28, 2016 at 5:02 am EST By Taegan Goddard 12 Comments

“As the war between Fox News and Donald Trump ratchets up, Roger Ailes is fighting off criticism from his senior executives over his handling of the crisis. According to one highly placed source, last night, Ailes sent out the now-famous statement mocking Trump as being scared to meet with the ‘Ayatollah’ and ‘Putin’ if he became president,” New York Magazine reports.

Said a source: “That was Roger 100 percent. A lot of people on the second floor didn’t think it was a good idea.”

Los Angeles Times: “The statement was seen as unorthodox for a news executive and raised questions about the network’s impartiality in its Trump coverage going forward.”

What If Trump Wasn’t Running?

January 28, 2016 at 4:59 am EST By Taegan Goddard 4 Comments

Joe Klein: “In a Trumpless world, I realized, the Republican race would have been a fascinating thing, probably involving the two young Cuban-American Senators. It might even have involved a debate of real substance about really important things. Cruz favors a flat tax with a levy on business sales; Rubio favors a simpler version of the current graduated income tax system. Rubio is an aggressive neoconservative on foreign policy; Cruz is more cautious, wary of attempting regime change in the Middle East, but he camouflages that caution with incendiary rhetoric about carpet bombing and ripping up the Iran deal. Both are superior on the stump, effortlessly eloquent. Cruz has an ironic edge; Rubio is more substantive.”

“Ahh, Trump. There is a British expression that comes to mind: he is playing ‘silly buggers’ with us, taking us for fools. He has been all along. There was all sorts of speculation about why he would drop out of the Fox debate. He would dominate the news for days with his defiance, shutting out his opponents. He might even get Fox’s Roger Ailes to make a concession—fire the aide who sent out a nasty press release about Trump—but, knowing Ailes, I figured that was as likely as Mexico paying for the wall. Certainly, the substance of debates was a risk for Trump and this was a way to avoid a big one—one in which he might finally have been the target of his opponents.”

Cruz Allies Offer $1.5 Million for Debate with Trump

January 27, 2016 at 9:52 pm EST By Taegan Goddard 30 Comments

Super PACs supporting Ted Cruz say they will donate $1.5 million to charities committed to helping veterans if rival Donald Trump agrees to a one-on-one debate with Cruz, The Hill reports.

Christie Steps Up Attacks on Rubio

January 27, 2016 at 8:05 pm EST By Taegan Goddard 15 Comments

Gov. Chris Christie, “smarting from weeks of negative commercials against him in New Hampshire, has struck back at several Republican opponents in animated appearances on the campaign trail this week,” the New York Times reports.

“One rival has drawn especially biting attacks: Senator Marco Rubio of Florida. Mr. Christie has long criticized Mr. Rubio for lacking executive experience. But in recent days he has dialed up his attacks, repeatedly deriding Mr. Rubio as a political lightweight in a tone that verges on contempt.”

No More Undercard Debate

January 27, 2016 at 8:01 pm EST By Taegan Goddard 7 Comments

“ABC News will not include an undercard contest during its Republican presidential debate in February, according to new criteria released from the network,” The Hill reports.

“The decision threatens to cut the debate stage to as few as six candidates just three days before New Hampshire primary.”

Extra Bonus Quote of the Day

January 27, 2016 at 4:34 pm EST By Taegan Goddard 52 Comments

“Donald Trump knows that by not showing up, he’s owning the entire event.”

— Rush Limbaugh, quoted by the New York Times, on this week’s GOP presidential debate.

Trump Takes Lead in Iowa

January 27, 2016 at 4:19 pm EST By Taegan Goddard 10 Comments

A new Monmouth University Poll of likely Iowa Republican caucusgoers finds that Donald Trump leads the GOP field with 30%, followed by Ted Cruz at 23%, Marco Rubio at 16% and Ben Carson at 10%.

Key finding: “Cruz’s support has basically held steady since his 24% showing in December when he led the field, while Trump’s support has grown substantially from 19% last month. The current result is Trump’s
best showing in any Monmouth Iowa caucus poll since he entered the race.”

Carson Slams His Top Adviser as Dishonest

January 27, 2016 at 4:17 pm EST By Taegan Goddard 19 Comments

“Ben Carson said his top outside adviser and longtime friend Armstrong Williams is dishonest – a failing he also attributed to political opponents and the media that has covered his campaign,” the Wall Street Journal reports.

Said Carson: “Armstrong is not necessarily the epitome of truth. He doesn’t speak all things that are correct. He often speaks without thinking. He has no official capacity in the campaign whatsoever. His influence has been vastly overrated.”

Bonus Quote of the Day

January 27, 2016 at 4:16 pm EST By Taegan Goddard 24 Comments

“Look we’ve gotten along fine. With that bunch of people running, I’m kind of pulling for him.”

— Sen. Harry Reid, quoted by The Hill, on Donald Trump’s campaign for president.

Another Sign the GOP Is Failing as a Party

January 27, 2016 at 4:05 pm EST By Taegan Goddard 28 Comments

Julia Azari: “Donald Trump has announced that he ‘won’t bother’ with Thursday’s Republican debate — the last one before Monday’s Iowa caucuses. It’s certainly not the norm for a leading candidate to bail out on a party event just as primary season is about to begin. But Trump’s decision not to participate Thursday is especially weird because the debate is hosted by Fox News.”

“In the school of thought that defines parties as networks of actors who have a common purpose, Fox News is easily included as part of the GOP — not just as a sympathetic news outlet, but as a member of the party coalition. So we have a situation where the Republican Party’s polling front-runner is openly feuding with its biggest media outlet. This is not how parties are supposed to work according to many political scientists.”

Americans Don’t Want an Atheist President

January 27, 2016 at 2:39 pm EST By Taegan Goddard 134 Comments

A new Pew Research Center survey finds that “being an atheist remains one of the biggest liabilities that a presidential candidate can have; fully half of American adults say they would be less likely to vote for a hypothetical presidential candidate who does not believe in God, while just 6% say they would be more likely to vote for a nonbeliever.”

That said, many Republicans think Donald Trump would be a good president despite his perceived lack of religiousness among GOP voters.

Rand Paul Predicts Best Debate Yet

January 27, 2016 at 2:35 pm EST By Taegan Goddard 13 Comments

Sen. Rand Paul argued that Republicans are in for their best presidential debate of the cycle with front-runner Donald Trump absent from the stage after refusing to participate, The Hill reports.

Said Paul: “It’s sort of a double-win for me: not only am I on the main stage, but we don’t have to put up with a lot of empty blather and boastfulness and calling people names.”

Trump Quote of the Day

January 27, 2016 at 2:00 pm EST By Taegan Goddard 53 Comments

“I refuse to call Megyn Kelly a bimbo, because that would not be politically correct. Instead I will only call her a lightweight reporter!”

— Donald Trump, quoted by Reuters, escalating his fight with Fox News.

GOP Campaign Against Planned Parenthood Fails

January 27, 2016 at 10:56 am EST By Taegan Goddard 106 Comments

“A grand jury’s indictment of two abortion opponents who covertly recorded Planned Parenthood officials is the latest, most startling sign that a Republican campaign against the group has run into trouble,” the New York Times reports.

“In a dozen states including Texas, where the grand jury in Houston examined Planned Parenthood at the request of Republican officials but ended up indicting the opponents, various investigations have concluded without finding any wrongdoing by affiliates of the group. Eight states have declined to investigate since videos began surfacing in June alleging that Planned Parenthood illegally sells tissue from aborted fetuses.”

“In the presidential race, Republican candidates are competing to condemn Planned Parenthood in an effort to appeal to conservative voters… Party strategists worry that such attacks will backfire with the general electorate in November, especially among women, younger voters and political independents.”

Clinton Would Consider Appointing Obama to Court

January 27, 2016 at 9:44 am EST By Taegan Goddard 98 Comments

At a campaign event in Iowa, Hillary Clinton “lit up when a voter asked her if she would consider appointing the president to the Supreme Court should she win the White House,” ABC News reports.

Said Clinton: “Wow, what a great idea. No one has ever suggested that to me, I love that, wow. He may have a few other things to do but I tell you that’s a great idea.”

Trump’s Debate Decision Really Hurts Cruz

January 27, 2016 at 9:36 am EST By Taegan Goddard 6 Comments

This piece is only available to Political Wire members.

Donald Trump’s decision to skip Thursday’s debate was a smart move for many reasons. It allows Trump to dominate another week of media coverage. It demonstrates that a tough negotiator will walk away from a deal rather than be made to look like a fool. And it freezes the presidential race after a string of Iowa polls shows Trump leading the GOP race.
