Rush for Campaign Cash Begins After Court Ruling

April 5, 2014 at 7:00 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

As constitutional scholars digest this week’s Supreme Court decision on campaign finance, “it has already set off a bipartisan scramble for campaign cash, thrusting party leaders, lawmakers with leadership PACs, and candidates into a fierce competition,” the New York Times reports.

“The ruling allows donors to make the maximum contribution to an unlimited number of campaigns, freeing donors from caps that required them to pick and prioritize from among each party’s candidates and national committees. And while the decision could inject tens of millions of additional dollars into the 2014 races, it has also left some candidates and party leaders with a new concern: that the biggest donors will get tired of writing new checks.”

Politicians Release Wierd B-Roll Video

April 5, 2014 at 6:28 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Huffington Post: “Political campaigns are not allowed to coordinate their efforts with the super PACs that nominally support them — or so they would have us believe, which we do not. So when a super PAC needs choice, clean, professional footage of the candidates they support but aren’t allowed to talk to, what’s it to do?”

“Well, in recent months, candidates have found an end-run around campaign finance law by posting strange videos of B-roll footage to the internet for super PACs to use. Of course, that means we can use it too, to make fun of the candidates, as we’ve done here with Sen. Mark Udall (D-Colo.), who has a weird thing for standing alone in fields.”

Bush Family Returns to the Spotlight

April 5, 2014 at 6:24 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Washington Post: “The Bushes, one of America’s most prominent political dynasties, have spent the better part of the past few years under the radar after George W. Bush left office amid dismal approval ratings and as his father battled health problems. The family’s surge back into the spotlight comes at an opportune time.”

April 4, 2014 at 6:20 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“I think the American people should know that the members of Congress are underpaid. I understand that it’s widely felt that they underperform, but the fact is that this is the board of directors for the largest economic entity in the world.”

— Rep. Jim Moran (D-VA), quoted by Roll Call.

Court May Soon Lift All Campaign Donor Limits

April 4, 2014 at 5:31 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“The sweeping language and logic of Wednesday’s Supreme Court decision on campaign finance may imperil other legal restrictions on money in politics,” the New York Times reports.

“The 5-to-4 decision, which struck down overall limits on contributions by individuals to candidates and parties, was the latest in a series of campaign finance decisions from the court led by Chief Justice John G. Roberts Jr. that took an expansive view of First Amendment rights and a narrow one of political corruption. According to experts in election law, there is no reason to think that the march toward deregulating election spending will stop with the ruling in McCutcheon v. Federal Election Commission.”

Wall Street Journal: “Republican officials and their allies, reviewing Wednesday’s Supreme Court ruling on campaign finance, say they now have ammunition for additional challenges to restrictions on political contributions and may press to strike down all limits on donations to candidates and political parties.”

April 4, 2014 at 5:30 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Democrats struggling to combat a flood of outside money pouring in to defeat their candidates have found at least a temporary solution: If you can’t beat them, brand them,” the Los Angeles Times reports.

“The latest strategy of Democratic messaging is tying Republican candidates and policies to the party’s most prominent — and at times vilified — financial patrons, billionaire industrialists Charles and David Koch.”

Alabama House Passes Anti-Gay Resolution

April 4, 2014 at 5:06 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“One Alabama lawmaker is crying foul after the Alabama House today approved a resolution calling for the United States Congress to convene an Article V constitutional convention to ban same-sex marriage,” the Birmingham News reports.

“Resolutions are frequently passed en masse, and lawmakers rarely pay them much attention. The description of the resolution on the House Rules Committee report did not specify what the convention would address. Rep. Patricia Todd (D) said that was deceptive, and she accused House Speaker Mike Hubbard (R) of misleading her about it.”

“Todd is the first openly gay lawmaker elected to the Alabama Legislature.”

Coats Asked Questions at Wrong Hearing

April 3, 2014 at 4:38 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Sen. Dan Coats (R-IN) “was prepped for an appropriations hearing on the defense budget when he took his turn Wednesday afternoon, flipping papers on his lap, reading from them and commending the witness for his department’s prompt response to a letter Coats had sent about a military accounting office in his home state,” the Washington Post reports.

“It was all fairly innocuous except for one problem: Coats was in the completely wrong hearing complimenting the wrong witness.”

Mississippi Will Ban Abortion at 20 Weeks

April 3, 2014 at 11:49 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Mississippi Governor Phil Bryant (R) said that he looks forward to signing the state’s bill banning abortions after 20 weeks of pregnancy, the Christian Post reports.
