Obama’s Views on Race Stay Steady

January 19, 2015 at 9:09 am EST By Taegan Goddard 9 Comments

“During racially tense moments that have beset the nation recently, many Americans have longed for President Obama to display some of the passion and soaring rhetoric that made the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr., who would have turned 86 last week, a civil rights legend,” the Washington Post reports.

“But the messages of restraint Obama has given in response to outcry over police violence are the same ones he has been dispensing for 20 to 30 years, echoes of thoughts he has had ever since he was a young community organizer in Chicago. His central tenets: Don’t give in to anger and violence; work to improve, not destroy, the legal system; and accept that change will come and things are getting better, albeit more slowly than many would like.”

“Though Obama’s views have evolved on issues such as gay marriage and national security during his six years in office, his views on race have remained remarkably consistent, and recent events appear to have affirmed rather than altered those views.”

Quote of the Day

“I can more than hold my own – and I have – on a debate stage with any Harvard law grad.”

–Mike Huckabee, in an interview with the Sunday Times.

Better Economy Boosts Obama Approval

January 19, 2015 at 7:23 am EST By Taegan Goddard 43 Comments

A new Washington Post-ABC News poll finds President Obama’s overall approval rating now stands at 50%, the highest since the spring of 2013.

“His standing is nine points higher than in December and seven points higher than in October, just before Republicans captured control of the Senate, increased their House majority to its highest level in eight decades and recorded advances in the states.”

Court Could Provide GOP With Cover on Gay Marriage

January 19, 2015 at 7:18 am EST By Taegan Goddard 53 Comments

New York Times: “If the high court resolves the issue as expected in June, it could deliver a decision that has the benefit of largely neutralizing a debate that a majority of Americans believe Republicans are on the wrong side of — and well ahead of the party’s 2016 presidential primaries.”

“To have the question disposed of and dispensed with, many Republicans say, could make their opinions on the matter largely moot, providing a political escape hatch that gives them an excuse to essentially say: ‘It’s been settled. Let’s move on.'”

Chris Christie Sinks to Sarah Palin Territory

January 18, 2015 at 12:22 pm EST By Taegan Goddard 62 Comments

A new CBS poll shows 29% of Republicans would like to see Christie run for the Republican nomination for president. But 44% say no. Only former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin’s numbers are more underwater: 30% of Republicans say they’d like to see her run, but 59% disagree.

In contrast, 59% of Republicans would like to see Mitt Romney jump into the 2016 race, while 26% believe he should stay out.

Bush Brothers Not Very Close

January 18, 2015 at 12:13 pm EST By Taegan Goddard 69 Comments

“As former Gov. Jeb Bush of Florida gears up for a possible campaign for the presidency, he is seen as the brother of the last Republican to live in the White House and therefore, in some ways, the second coming of George W. Bush. But the reality is the Bush brothers are not especially close,” the New York Times reports.

“While loving and supportive of each other, the two brothers do not talk that often, according to family intimates. Seven years apart in age, they travel in different circles and have distinct political networks. The older brother has been a vocal advocate of a Jeb Bush campaign but, like everyone else, reads tea leaves about whether he will run.”

Graham Says He’s Seriously Considering 2016 Bid

January 18, 2015 at 12:10 pm EST By Taegan Goddard 47 Comments

Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-SC) said that he’s seriously exploring a bid for the Republican presidential nomination, Politico reports.

Graham said he is not polling yet “but we set up a testing-the-waters committee under the IRS code that will allow me to look beyond South Carolina as to whether or not a guy like Lindsey Graham has a viable path.”

Candidates Trying E-Books Instead

January 18, 2015 at 10:14 am EST By Taegan Goddard 1 Comment

Politico: “The pre-presidential campaign book — that quadrennial rite in which anyone running for president, thinking about running or even denying they’re running releases a hardcover book with their name on it — has long been known as a stale, if obligatory, step on the path to the Oval Office. But this year, two prominent likely presidential contenders have decided that if they can’t quite ditch the genre, they can wrap it in a shiny new digital package.”

McCain Hopes New Post Will Refine Legacy

January 18, 2015 at 8:53 am EST By Taegan Goddard 22 Comments

Sen. John McCain (R-AZ) “is waging another national campaign — this time, to define his legacy,” the AP reports.

“After two unsuccessful presidential bids, the 78-year-old former Navy pilot and Vietnam prisoner of war has rebounded as the chairman of the powerful Senate Armed Services Committee. The post gives the Arizona Republican a significant say on national security — and a chance to ensure that his loss to Barack Obama in the 2008 White House race isn’t the final word in the colorful McCain chronicles.”

Quote of the Day

January 18, 2015 at 8:42 am EST By Taegan Goddard 12 Comments

“Romney’s problem has always been really about believability and connection with the challenges of average Americans. It’s simply never going to be believable to go from car elevators, off-shore accounts and his famous 47 percent comment to the populist income equality warrior.”

— Obama 2012 campaign manager Jim Messina, quoted by Politico, on Mitt Romney’s new focus on poverty.

Obama Will Propose Middle Class Tax Cut

January 18, 2015 at 8:40 am EST By Taegan Goddard 37 Comments

President Obama will call on Congress “to raise taxes and fees on the wealthiest taxpayers and the largest financial firms to finance an array of tax cuts for the middle class, pressing to reshape the tax code to help working families,” the New York Times reports.

“The proposal faces long odds in the Republican-controlled Congress, led by lawmakers who have long opposed raising taxes and who argue that doing so would hamper economic growth at a time the country cannot afford it. And it was quickly dismissed by leading Republicans as a nonstarter. But the decision to present the plan during Tuesday’s speech marks the start of a debate over taxes and the economy that will shape both Mr. Obama’s legacy and the 2016 presidential campaign.”

Warren Explains Her Influence

January 17, 2015 at 4:43 pm EST By Taegan Goddard 17 Comments

Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-MA) “has an explanation for the singular nature of her power,” the Washington Post reports.

Said Warren: “I’ll always be an outsider. That’s how I understand the world. There’s a real benefit to being clear about this. I know why I’m here. I think about this every morning before I open my eyes, and I’m still thinking about it every night when I go to sleep.”

Republicans Snub Univision on Debates

January 17, 2015 at 4:30 pm EST By Taegan Goddard 37 Comments

“The Republican National Committee announced Friday which networks landed 2016 presidential debates — and Univision, the most-watched Spanish-language network, didn’t make the cut,” the Huffington Post reports.

“How Republicans engage with Univision this election cycle is being closely watched given that the network reaches 96 percent of Hispanic households, a key demographic for either party hoping to win the White House.”

Watch Scott Walker in Iowa

January 17, 2015 at 4:26 pm EST By Taegan Goddard 21 Comments

The Economist: “Mr Walker is almost tailor-made to prevail in the first-in-the-nation Iowa caucuses. A credibly conservative evangelical Christian (he’s over there on the right with Messrs Paul and Cruz), Mr Walker has proved his capacity to vanquish Democrats first by laying low Wisconsin’s public-sector unions in a noisy battle, and then by facing a recall and winning re-election in the face of an organized national campaign to avenge the union defeat. Though he is not exactly an electrifying presence, Mr Walker is a well-tested, articulate, union-slaying, budget-cutting exponent of conservative ideals that could appeal to both the pro-business party establishment and the Christian conservative grassroots. This race could get interesting.”

Obama Will Try a Shorter Speech

January 17, 2015 at 3:25 pm EST By Taegan Goddard 3 Comments

“One of the White House’s goals as President Obama puts the final touches on his upcoming State of the Union address is shortening the speech, people familiar with the process say,” the Wall Street Journal reports.

Extra Bonus Quote of the Day

January 17, 2015 at 3:14 pm EST By Taegan Goddard 9 Comments

“Romney’s case is different than Reagan’s. He lost the nomination decisively to John McCain in 2008, and in 2012 he defeated a historically weak field (well, aside from my dad) – and that was mainly thanks to his ability to raise more money and pound his competitors with negative ads.”

— Abby Huntsman, writing for MSNBC, on Mitt Romney thinking of running for president a third time.

Romney Leads the GOP Pack

January 17, 2015 at 3:06 pm EST By Taegan Goddard 26 Comments

A new Economist/YouGov poll shows Mitt Romney leading the GOP pack of presidential hopefuls with 28%, followed by Jeb Bush at 12%, Ben Carson at 10%, Ted Cruz at 9%, Mike Huckabee at 8%, Rand Paul at 8% and Scott Walker at 6%.

Feinstein’s Husband Stands to Profit from Deal

January 17, 2015 at 2:54 pm EST By Taegan Goddard 18 Comments

“Ever wonder how lowly paid lawmakers leave office filthy rich? Sen. Dianne Feinstein is showing how it’s done.,” the New York Post reports.

“The US Postal Service plans to sell 56 buildings — so it can lease space more expensively — and the real estate company of the California senator’s husband, Richard Blum, is set to pocket about $1 billion in commissions.”
