Schatz Wins Primary in Hawaii

August 16, 2014 at 9:04 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“In one of the most narrow, dramatic races in state history, Sen. Brian Schatz (D) edged Rep. Colleen Hanabusa (D) in their campaign for the Democratic nomination to the U.S. Senate and the inside track to succeed the late Sen. Daniel Inouye (D-HI),” the Honolulu Star Advertiser reports.

“Schatz finished 1,769 votes ahead of Hanabusa. He had a 1,635-vote lead following Saturday’s primary election that ended with two Hawaii island precincts unable to cast ballots because of surrounding damage from Tropical Storm Iselle.”

Perry Indicted for Abuse of Power

August 15, 2014 at 9:55 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

A grand jury indicted Texas Gov. Rick Perry (R) on two felony counts on Friday, “charging that he abused his power last year when he attempted to pressure the district attorney here, a Democrat, to step down by threatening to cut off state financing to her office,” the New York Times reports.

“The indictment left Mr. Perry, a Republican, the first Texas governor in nearly 100 years to face criminal charges and presented a major roadblock to his presidential ambitions at the very time that he had been showing signs of making a comeback.”

Dallas Morning News: “Abuse of official capacity is a first-degree felony with punishment ranging from five to 99 years in prison, and coercion of a public servant is a third-degree felony with a penalty of two to 10 years.”

Palin Endorses Miller for Senate

August 15, 2014 at 9:00 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Sarah Palin endorsed Alaska U.S. Senate candidate Joe Miller (R) on Friday, four days in advance of a hard-fought GOP primary election, the Alaska Dispatch reports.

Said Palin: “We said we’d send the good guys in Washington their reinforcements, so, Alaska, here we go! Vote for Joe Miller on Tuesday and shake off the liberal stronghold so we can get on the right track.”

Why Paul Ryan No Longer Watches ‘House of Cards’

August 15, 2014 at 4:10 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Rep. Paul Ryan (R-WI) told Parade that he doesn’t watch House of Cards anymore.

Said Ryan: “I watched the first couple of episodes until he cheated on his wife with that reporter. It turned my stomach so much that I just couldn’t watch it anymore. His behavior was so reprehensible, and it hit too close to home because he was a House member, that it just bothered me too much. And what I thought is, it makes us all look like we’re like that.”

Zell Miller Endorses Michelle Nunn

August 15, 2014 at 4:09 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Georgia Senate hopeful Michelle Nunn (D) scored a key endorsement in her effort to pitch herself as a moderate capable of representing a GOP-leaning state, garnering the backing of former Georgia Gov. Zell Miller (D), the AP reports.

Said Miller: “Michelle Nunn gives this old Georgian hope,” adding that Nunn is a “bridge builder, not a bridge burner.”

“A colorful Democrat who famously crossed party lines in 2004 to endorse President George W. Bush for re-election and delivered a scathing keynote address at the GOP convention that year, Miller has long been a popular figure across the state.”

Libertarian Streak Grows in GOP

August 15, 2014 at 4:06 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“The killing of 18-year-old Michael Brown by a police officer in Ferguson, Mo., has produced a rare and surprisingly unified response across the ideological spectrum, with Republicans and Democrats joining to decry the tactics of the city’s police force in the face of escalating protests,” the Washington Post reports.

“Most notably, the reactions reflect a shift away from the usual support and sympathy conservatives typically show for law enforcement in such situations. Although possibly unique to the circumstances of the events in Missouri this week, the changing reaction on the right is clear evidence of a rising and more vocal libertarian wing within the Republican Party.”

Florida May Not Be Able to Hold Valid Elections

August 15, 2014 at 4:00 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Florida Secretary of State Ken Detzner told a judge that the state “couldn’t organize special elections to fill seven newly drawn congressional seats until March 2015 at the earliest,” the Orlando Sentinel reports.

But even that schedule “in all likelihood violates federal law requiring that members of Congress be elected on November 4, 2014, and serve two-year terms.”

“Detzner wrote that March 17, 2015, was the earliest date the state and county election supervisors could hold a special primary election to fill the new congressional districts, with a May 26 general election to follow. But that would render this fall’s elections largely moot.”

Majority Favors Allowing Same-Sex Marriage

August 15, 2014 at 3:15 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Marist Poll: “A majority of Americans favor legalizing same-sex marriage, but there is little consensus about whether the decision should be made on the federal or state level. Supporters of legalizing same-sex marriage think the issue should be decided for the entire country by a federal law. Half of those who oppose it believe it should be determined by the states.”

“And, while Americans’ position on legalizing same sex marriage is a driving factor in the debate, political party affiliation matters, too. Democrats are more likely to turn to the federal level, and Republicans look more to the states. Independents are closer to the Democrats on whether to seek federal or state action.”

Lawsuit Seeks to End Pay-to-Play Restrictions

August 15, 2014 at 3:10 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

A recent lawsuit says investment managers “should be able to donate money to whichever politicians they choose, even if those donations could present a conflict of interest down the line,” Pension 360 reports.

“The lawsuit, filed last week by Republican committees from New York and Tennessee against the SEC, wants the court to affirm that political donations are free speech–and, by extension, current SEC pay-to-play rules are unconstitutional. Under the SEC’s current rules, investment advisors can’t make donations to politicians that have any influence–direct or indirect–over the hiring of investment firms.”

How Clinton Will Try to Separate from Obama

August 15, 2014 at 3:02 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Hillary Clinton’s split with President Obama over a foreign policy “organizing principle” isn’t likely to be the last time differences emerge between the two, the AP reports.

“How she handles those breaks could be among her biggest challenges to a successful run for president in 2016… Clinton will likely seek some separation from Obama if she runs for president — especially if Obama’s approval ratings stay near 40 percent. But decoupling from a two-term president of your own party can be tricky.”

McDonnell Took $177K in Cash and Gifts

August 15, 2014 at 9:09 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“After hundreds of exhibits and 45 witnesses over the past three weeks, prosecutors rested their corruption case against former Gov. Bob McDonnell and his wife, Maureen,” the Richmond Times Dispatch reports.

“In a gripping display Thursday, prosecutors directed a parade of designer dresses, pumps and handbags across the courtroom, a series of expensive gifts from Williams that the McDonnells returned after an investigation into the largesse was made public… FBI agent David Hulser, the government’s last witness, testified Thursday that Williams’ spending on the McDonnells — including two loans for $50,000 and a third for $20,000 — topped $177,000.”

King Dismisses Racial Profiling in Ferguson

August 15, 2014 at 8:28 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Rep. Steve King (R-IA) said the African-American community in Ferguson, Mo., should “settle down” and “straighten up and fly right,” the Des Moines Register reports.

He was also dismissive that racial profiling lead to distrust between residents and police.

Said King: “I’ve seen the video. It looks to me like you don’t need to bother with that particular factor because they all appear of a single origin, I should say, a continental origin might be the way to phrase that.”

Ernst Suggest United Nations Could Take Iowa Farms

August 15, 2014 at 8:26 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Yahoo News has obtained video showing Iowa U.S. Senate candidate Joni Ernst (R) warning that the United Nations “could force Iowa farmers off their land, dictate what cities Iowans must live in, and control how Iowa citizens travel from place to place.”

Said Ernst: “The United Nations has imposed this upon us, and as a U.S. senator, I would say, ‘No more. No more Agenda 21.’ Community planning — to the effect that it is implementing eminent domain and taking away property rights away from individuals — I don’t agree with that.”

Agenda 21 is “a community planning provision in a decades-old United
Nations treaty that’s become an object of fear and conspiracy theories
on the right.”

August 15, 2014 at 8:22 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

A new Public Policy Polling survey in Kentucky finds Sen. Rand Paul (R-KY) is in a very strong position if he decided to run for reelection to the Senate in 2016.

Paul would lead even popular Gov. Steve Beshear (D) in a hypothetical match up by 50% to 41%.

Perdue Leads in Georgia

August 15, 2014 at 8:06 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

In the race for governor, Gov. Nathan Deal (R) is ahead of challenger Jason Carter (D), 43% to 39%.

Coakley Maintains Lead for Governor

August 15, 2014 at 8:06 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

A new Boston Globe poll in Massachusetts finds Martha Coakley (D) leading Charlie Baker (R) in the race for governor by double-digits, 40% to 32%.

Arkansas Lawmakers Seek to Abolish Lt. Governor’s Office

August 15, 2014 at 7:23 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Two Arkansas senators said Thursday that they plan to lead a “bipartisan effort” to get rid of the office of lieutenant governor when the legislature convenes in January,” the Arkansas Democrat Gazette reports.

The lawmakers called the lieutenant governor’s office a “vestige of the early 19th century,” and estimated that abolishing the office “would save Arkansas taxpayers about $450,000 a year.”
