Christie Doesn’t Remember Getting Text on Bridge Traffic

August 2, 2014 at 3:14 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie (R) said “he doesn’t recall receiving a text message from a top aide in December as talk of the controversial lane closings at the George Washington Bridge intensified,” the Newark Star Ledger reports.

“Regina Ega, whom the Republican governor has named his next chief of staff, testified last month before a state legislative committee that she texted Christie about testimony given by Port Authority officials concerning the lane closings but later deleted the message.”

Said Christie: “I have no recollection of her ever sending me a text. So I can’t remember what it was over.”

The GOP’s Border Spectacle

August 2, 2014 at 10:30 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Wall Street Journal editorial: “Republicans should be heading toward a November election victory, perhaps even a big one, adding to their House majority and maybe picking up the six or more seats necessary to control the Senate. Yet never underestimate their ability to save the day for Democrats, not least by showcasing the GOP’s immigration neuralgia… the GOP again gave the country the impression that its highest policy
priority is to deport as many children as rapidly as possible back from
wherever they came.”

“House Republicans may have scrambled enough on Friday to save themselves from a total meltdown. But this latest immigration debacle won’t help the party’s image, which is still recovering from the government shutdown debacle of 2011. A party whose preoccupation is deporting children is going to alienate many conservatives, never mind minority voters.”

Obama Readies Executive Action on Immigration

August 2, 2014 at 9:59 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“President Obama is preparing to announce new measures that would potentially allow millions of illegal immigrants to remain in the United States without fear of deportation, a politically explosive decision that could jolt Washington just weeks before the midterm elections,” the Washington Post reports.

“Administration officials have told allies in private meetings that both the current surge of Central American children crossing the border and Congress’s failure this year to pass a broader immigration overhaul have propelled the president toward taking action on his own by summer’s end.”

The Coming Democratic Collapse

August 2, 2014 at 9:45 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Jeff Greenfield: “If you’re looking for a truism that remains true, then reach out and grasp this one: the “six year curse.” With one (highly instructive) exception, the party that holds the White House will lose Congressional seats in the six-year midterms. It happened to Teddy Roosevelt and Franklin Roosevelt; it happened to Ike and LBJ and Reagan. It will almost surely happen to Barack Obama this November.”

“Why? There is no single reason; there are, rather, different forces, any one of which can afflict the party that’s held the White House for six years. What makes this November so daunting for Democrats is that almost all of them are at work this time.”

Netanyahu Tells U.S. Not to Second Guess Him Again

August 2, 2014 at 9:21 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Following the quick collapse of the cease-fire in Gaza, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu told the White House not to force a truce with Palestinian militants on Israel,” the AP reports.

“Sources familiar with conversations between Netanyahu and senior U.S. officials, including Secretary of State John Kerry, say the Israeli leader advised the Obama administration ‘not to ever second guess me again’ on the matter. The officials also said Netanyahu said he should be ‘trusted’ on the issue and about the unwillingness of Hamas to enter into and follow through on cease-fire talks.”

Least Productive, Most Divided Congress Ever

August 2, 2014 at 9:09 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“House and Senate lawmakers scrambled to leave town on Friday night for a five-week recess, with a failure to address the refugee crisis at the southern border only the latest indignity in a year that may redefine congressional dysfunction,” the New York Times reports.

“The 113th Congress this week took another step toward ignominy as one of the least productive, most divided in history. Vocal Republicans were empowered, virtually dictating terms of two House border security bills even after party leaders had spent much of the year trying to marginalize them.”

GOP Requested Police Records on FitzGerald

August 2, 2014 at 9:06 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“The Republican Governors Association, which is providing campaign support to Gov. John Kasich’s re-election bid, requested information from the Westlake Police Department about a report of a suspicious car that led officers to FitzGerald and a woman who was not his wife in a parked car before dawn in October 2012,” the Cleveland Plain Dealer reports.

House GOP Rallies to Pass Border Bill

August 1, 2014 at 8:58 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“House Republicans found the votes late Friday night to pass a $694 million appropriations bill aimed at stemming the tide of the child migrant surge at the U.S-Mexico border,” Roll Call reports.

“It passed largely along party lines, 223-189, freeing Republicans to go home for the August recess able to tell constituents they took action to address the crisis — unlike the Senate, which was unable to pass its own border funding bill Thursday but left town anyway.”

Police Found Fitzgerald in Car with Another Woman

August 1, 2014 at 4:42 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

The Cleveland Plain Dealer reports that police officers in 2012 responded to a call about suspicious behavior and found Ohio gubernatorial candidate Ed FitzGerald (D) and a woman who was not his wife in a parked car at 4:30 am.

Said the witness in an audio recording: “I don’t know if they’re having sex in the parking lot or what they’re doing here. I don’t know if they don’t notice all my lights inside and they’re just [inaudible] something, but all I keep seeing is like something going back and forth, and I’m like, eh, you know what, this is a little fishy.”

Fitzgerald says nothing inappropriate happened in the car and he was not charged with a crime.

Florida Elections Could Be Delayed as Judge Orders New Map

August 1, 2014 at 4:23 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

A Florida judge ordered the state legislature to submit a redrawn congressional map within two weeks to replace ones for two districts that were ruled illegal, the New York Times reports.

The ruling held open the possibility of delaying the November elections.

Greer Will Stay Quiet For Now

August 1, 2014 at 4:22 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Tampa Bay Times: “Here’s some good news for Charlie Crist: Jim Greer, his former close friend and former state GOP Chairman, has decided against doing interviews since leaving prison a month ago. In a recently published tell-all book written by St. Petersburg author Peter Gollenbock, The Chairman: The Rise and Betrayal of Jim Greer, Greer castigates Crist as a self-absorbed liar and lightweight.”

How Lamar Alexander Fended Off His Primary Challenge

August 1, 2014 at 3:25 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Conservatives have poured millions into primary challenges to senators this cycle, even in races where chances of success were slim. But Sen. Lamar Alexander (R-TN) has proved one of the greatest exceptions, and now he’s poised to defeated state Rep. Joe Carr and several lesser-known challengers in the Aug. 7 GOP primary,” Roll Call reports.

“So how did Alexander avoid the fate of many of his colleagues?”

Is Rivera Running a Stealth Campaign?

August 1, 2014 at 2:42 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Former Rep. David Rivera (R-FL) “supposedly put off his campaign last month for Florida’s 26th congressional district. But now, some voters say he’s back,” the Miami Herald reports.

“Several older Hispanics have told other Republican candidates in the race that they received automated phone calls this week urging them to vote for Rivera. Because Rivera never formally withdrew his candidacy, his name still appears on the Aug. 26 GOP primary ballot.”

Kevin Spacey Stole Kevin McCarthy Line

August 1, 2014 at 1:00 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard 1 Comment

“When Kevin Spacey was preparing to play ruthless House majority whip Frank Underwood on House of Cards, he turned to then-actual House majority whip Kevin McCarthy (R-CA),” People reports.

“The actor said he was interested in the mechanics of the job, but also in knowing: ‘How much do you twist arms?'”

Says McCarthy: “I told him I say to members, ‘You vote your district, you vote your conscience, you just don’t surprise me.’ And he stole that line for the show.”

House GOP Hopeful on Revised Border Bill

August 1, 2014 at 12:33 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“House Republicans moved closer to consensus Friday on legislation that would do little to immediately solve the crisis along the U.S.-Mexico border but would allow them to go home and tell voters that they did what they could before the start of a five-week recess,” the Washington Post reports.

“GOP leaders cautioned that they still have not locked down the votes needed to pass border security legislation, which was dramatically pulled from the House floor Thursday because of a lack of support from conservatives.”

The Hill: “Timing remains fluid on votes Friday, which was supposed to be the first day of the five-week August recess. In any case, approval of a House package would be going nowhere fast.”
