Obama’s Hands Tied by Russian Crisis

March 18, 2014 at 9:46 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

First Read: “The focus of a president’s second term usually turns more to foreign policy, especially once it seems like domestic priorities are totally stalled, you know, like it appears now. But for President Obama and his administration, the events in Ukraine and Russia probably aren’t what they had in mind on the foreign-policy front — especially with key midterm elections slightly more than seven months away. The president would prefer to be picking and choosing the foreign-policy focus he would like to have, say, like his event yesterday with the Palestinian leader on the ever-elusive Mideast peace deal.”

“Bottom line: Obama and his team are handcuffed dealing with this thorny issue when they have plenty of domestic work to do to help their party in November… And as we wrote yesterday, it’s highly unlikely that this foreign-policy standoff gets resolved in a triumphant way that helps Obama politically; this isn’t one of those crises where the public rallies around the commander-in-chief.”

Cruz Makes Another Trip to Iowa

March 18, 2014 at 8:24 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX) “is making his fourth trip to Iowa in eight months, logging serious face-time before most other potential 2016 White House hopefuls in the state that kicks off presidential voting,” the AP reports.

“That’s more Iowa trips than any of the other Republicans mentioned as possible presidential contenders, except for fellow tea party-backed U.S. Sen. Rand Paul of Kentucky. But Cruz’s brand of social conservatism may excite much of the party’s base more easily than Paul’s Libertarian ideals.”

Des Moines Register: “He’d never stepped foot in Iowa in his life until he came last summer to get acquainted with Iowa Christian conservative ministers at an event in Des Moines.”

Prison, Indictments Not Disqualifying in Illinois

March 18, 2014 at 8:10 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Reuters: “In the Illinois primary elections on Tuesday, candidates on Chicago’s Democratic ballot will include someone who served a prison term for bribery, another who is due to go on trial on bribery charges this spring and a third charged with bank fraud.”

“Political experts say all three candidates are either guaranteed victory or heavily favored to win.”

Quote of the Day

March 18, 2014 at 7:49 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Las Vegas takes advantage of every weakness that we have. That’s what power in Washington does. Power is a tool. And how you use it is a discerning attribute of your character.”

— Sen. Tom Coburn (R-OK), quoted by the New York Times.

Hiding the Money in Utah

March 18, 2014 at 7:40 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

New York Times: “It is the nightmare scenario for those who worry that the modern campaign finance system has opened up new frontiers of political corruption: A candidate colludes with wealthy corporate backers and promises to defend their interests if elected. The companies spend heavily to elect the candidate, but hide the money by funneling it through a nonprofit group. And the main purpose of the nonprofit appears to be getting the candidate elected.”

“But according to investigators, exactly such a plan is unfolding in an extraordinary case in Utah, a state with a cozy political establishment, where business holds great sway and there are no limits on campaign donations.”

McConnell Campaigns on His Power

March 18, 2014 at 7:24 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) “is building his re-election campaign around a concept that hasn’t been heard much recently: Vote for me–I’m powerful,” the Wall Street Journal reports.

“The 72-year-old Mr. McConnell is a veteran tactician skilled in pulling the levers of power. And despite historic levels of disdain among American voters for Washington and the deal-making that is the senator’s forte, he is running on his clout, in his campaign tactics and his pitch to voters.”

Emails Link Christie Political Aides to Bridge Scandal

March 17, 2014 at 6:56 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Newark Star Ledger: “New e-mails released today by the legislative panel investigating the George Washington Bridge lane closings link Gov. Chris Christie’s chief political strategist, Mike DuHaime, to discussions about the scandal and show his campaign manager, Bill Stepien, was kept more in the loop than previously known.”

Expect More Democratic Retirements

March 17, 2014 at 5:31 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

John King: “Watch in the week or so ahead for a few more retirements by veteran House Democrats. I’m told the Florida special election results were the last straw for at least two and perhaps more House Democrats facing tough 2014 races. Leadership will make a run at persuading these lawmakers otherwise – but with hope of regaining the majority all but lost, watch the Capitol exits.”

Russia Defies U.S. on Crimea

March 17, 2014 at 5:27 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Russian President Vladimir Putin “signed a decree late Monday night formally recognizing Ukraine’s Crimea region as a ‘sovereign and independent state,’ defying the United States and Europe just hours after they imposed their first financial sanctions since the crisis began and laying the groundwork for possible annexation,” the New York Times reports.

“The moves showed that Moscow had no intention of backing down in the face of Western sanctions over a dispute that has created a profound rift in East-West relations and threatens the security of borders created after the Soviet Union’s breakup in the early 1990s.”

Washington Post: “Popular at home but under fire abroad, Putin has little time to savor the rapid takeover of Crimea. The Russian president is scheduled to appear Tuesday before his country’s parliament to lay out a vision for what should happen next.”

Extra Bonus Quote of the Day

March 17, 2014 at 5:22 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“You think I’m not going to be on it? I would be honored to be on that list.”

— Sen. John McCain, quoted by the Daily Beast, hoping he’s on Russia’s list of banned U.S. officials.

March 17, 2014 at 3:28 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

March 17, 2014 at 2:21 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Wyoming state Rep. Troy Mader (R) told the Casper Tribune that he “stands by a book he wrote nearly 30 years ago that claims many gay people demand the right to have sex with children and people with AIDS should be quarantined if they continue having sex.”

Bonus Quote of the Day

March 17, 2014 at 2:02 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“If someone was a member of the Ku Klux Klan, and they were running a little bakery for instance, the majority of us would find it detestable that they refuse to serve blacks, and guess what? In a matter of weeks or so that business would shut down because no one is going to patronize them.”

— South Dakota Phil Jensen (R), quoted by the Rapid City Journal, arguing that private businesses should be allowed to discriminate.

Brown Won’t Limit Outside Money

March 17, 2014 at 2:00 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Scott Brown (R) on blasted Sen. Jeanne Shaheen’s (D-NH) challenge to limit outside spending in the New Hampshire Senate race as “self-serving and hypocritical.” The Hill reports.

Brown signed a similar pledge in his unsuccessful Massachusetts race against Elizabeth Warren (D) in 2012.

Gubernatorial Races Follow Presidential Results

March 17, 2014 at 12:41 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Dan Hopkins: “In recent years, gubernatorial elections have become increasingly nationalized, to the point where voting patterns in these races bear a striking resemblance to those in presidential races. If we look at all sitting governors, just 15 of the 50 lead states that were won by the other party in the last presidential election. That means just 30 percent of states split their votes. As recently as 1995, the figure was 44 percent, as Republicans were still competitive throughout the northeast.”
