California Lawmaker Arrested in FBI Probe

February 22, 2014 at 9:00 am EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

The businessmen California State Sen. Ronald Calderon (D) “expected to meet were actually FBI agents with an unsettling message: He was under investigation for public corruption, and he could either cooperate with authorities or face the consequences,” the Los Angeles Times reports.

“Calderon initially agreed to wear a wire in an effort to implicate other politicians, authorities said. That arrangement eventually fell apart, and on Friday prosecutors announced a sweeping indictment against Calderon charging him with bribery, fraud, money laundering and related offenses.”

The Incredible Power of Anthony Kennedy

February 22, 2014 at 8:48 am EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Stuart Taylor: “It’s no secret that Kennedy’s uniquely eclectic mix of views enables him to tip the balance to the left in 5-4 decisions on politically drenched issues including gay rights, abortion, and the death penalty, and to the right on issues including states’ rights, campaign spending, and guns.”

“But how aware are most Americans that taken together, these facts mean that a 77-year-old man whose name is recognized by only 41 percent of the public–fewer than all but one of his eight colleagues–has more power by far than any president (or justice) in history to decree the law of the land on all of the issues mentioned above? Plus other issues, including racial affirmative-action preferences, free speech, school discipline, school integration, school prayer, the death penalty, and much more.”

Protesters Take Control of Kiev

February 22, 2014 at 8:05 am EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Government authority appeared to melt away Saturday, leaving protesters to take control of the capital’s center. President Viktor Yanukovych left the capital for a city in the country’s Russian-speaking east but allies said he had no intention of giving up power,” the Wall Street Journal reports.

Transcripts Show Yellen Took Charge During Crisis

February 22, 2014 at 8:01 am EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“As the world’s financial system stood on the verge of collapse in October 2008, Janet L. Yellen was not even a full voting member of the Federal Reserve’s policy-making committee, but she was not shy about admonishing her colleagues for not acting faster,” the New York Times reports.

“What the transcripts show is a woman who was constantly pushing her peers — and also cleverly cajoling them — to do more to help ordinary households, not just financial institutions… In the end, during the most terrifying moments, Ms. Yellen helped persuade even the staunchest opponents of more aggressive actions to go along with the policies that the head of the Fed, Ben S. Bernanke, wanted.”

Shaheen Holds Solid Lead in New Hampshire

February 21, 2014 at 4:31 pm EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

A new Public Policy Polling survey in New Hampshire finds Sen. Jeanne Shaheen (D) leading possible challenger Scott Brown (R) by nine points, 47% to 38%.

Nixon Would Consider Run If Clinton Does Not

February 21, 2014 at 3:34 pm EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Missouri Gov. Jay Nixon (D) wouldn’t rule running for president in 2016 if Hillary Clinton does not, stressing the importance of a “voice” for the “heartland” of the country, Politico reports.

Said Nixon: “There’s still a wide avenue to run as a moderate, centrist, somebody-who-thinks-about-working-people-every-day Democrat in the heartland.”

Brown Calling Top New Hampshire Republicans

February 21, 2014 at 3:23 pm EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

John DiStaso has confirmed that former Sen. Scott Brown (R-MA) “has been making calls this week to prominent New Hampshire Republicans.”

“The two top New Hampshire GOP legislative leaders… told us this afternoon they were called by Brown this week. Neither would disclose details their private conversation, but we understand from others who were called that they were essentially courtesy, due diligence types of calls from Brown. And the takeaway was that Brown is serious about a potential run, but there remains no definitive word on when he will make a final decision.”

Who Gets Rich Off Campaigns?

February 21, 2014 at 2:51 pm EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Lee Aitken: “Did this torrent of money–raised and spent under the new rules of the Supreme Court’s Citizens United decision–make anyone rich? Did it create new financial incentives that changed the way the game is played or altered the political discourse? Has it, as some argue, bankrolled the polarization of America?”

“These legitimate questions are difficult to answer under current disclosure laws. And the U.S. press has been oddly complacent about that fact, continuing a tradition that puts the financial gains of political operatives–who are great sources and valued customers of the big media companies–off limits. The presumption seems to be that these men and women are motivated by ideology and personal loyalty, their payoff, if any, just a happy coincidence and a private matter.”

Christie Rewarded Donors to Mansion Fund

February 21, 2014 at 2:47 pm EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

The Huffington Post looks at how Gov. Chris Christie (R) used the governor’s mansion to reward political favor seekers.

“A review of IRS records and Drumthwacket donor lists, however, suggest that prospective donors saw the mansion as something more than just an altruistic investment. Contributions to Drumthwacket often coincided with the donors’ attempts to win tax breaks, political appointments or other support from Christie and his appointees. In many cases, the donors, like the Strangfelds, got what they wanted.”

Don’t Expect Anything to Get Done This Year

February 21, 2014 at 2:46 pm EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

First Read: “Both Democrats and Republicans have cleared the decks of anything that could divide their parties before the 2014 midterms. Republicans have essentially taken immigration off the table, as well as the threat of default or a government shutdown. Meanwhile, the White House has now removed chained CPI from its budget and slowed its push for fast-track authority. So both sides are deploying a do-no-harm strategy — all with less than nine months before Election Day 2014. It’s just the latest reminder that Washington is not going to get anything major done this year. It’s not even March 1, and both parties are waving the policy white flags.”

Too Early for 2016 Polls

February 21, 2014 at 1:58 pm EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Brendan Nyhan: “We’re still almost three years away from November 2016, but political journalists seem to want to fast-forward past the ongoing Washington stalemate to the next presidential election. How else can we explain the recent flurry of coverage for trial heat polls, which pit possible presidential contenders against each other in hypothetical general election matchups?”

“There’s just one problem: These polls–which exist mainly to generate press coverage for pollsters and fill space in the media–have zero predictive power at this point in the election cycle, don’t tell us anything we can’t learn from other metrics, and distract attention from the real action at this stage of the campaign.”

Transcripts Show Fed Caught Off Guard in 2008

February 21, 2014 at 12:57 pm EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

The Federal Reserve “released transcripts of 14 scheduled and emergency policy meetings it held in 2008, providing the most complete view yet into developments inside the nation’s central bank as the financial crisis worsened and threatened to plunge the U.S. into another Great Depression,” the Wall Street Journal reports.

“Two days after U.S. officials decided to let Lehman Brothers collapse in September 2008, and just before the Federal Reserve was about to unleash a torrent of new support programs to bolster a crumbling financial system, central-bank officials were still struggling to grasp the magnitude of the calamity that had hit the U.S. economy.

Lawmakers Cut School Funds Over Gay-Themed Books

February 21, 2014 at 9:11 am EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

South Carolina lawmakers voted to cut $70,000 in funding from two public colleges that assigned books about same-sex relationships, The State reports.

Said state Rep. Gary Smith (R): “One of the things I learned over the years is that if you want to make a point, you have to make it hurt. I understand academic freedom, but this is not academic freedom… This was about promoting one side with no academic debate involved.”

Candidate Gets Lecture After Cursing

February 21, 2014 at 8:35 am EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

California gubernatorial candidate Neel Kashkari (R) dropped a four-letter word on radio and was scolded by the producer, the Sacramento Bee reports.

Kashkari described himself as “the guy you send in when, pardon me, the shit is hitting the fan.”

Said producer Julie Kingsley: “We don’t cuss on the air… I wouldn’t expect it from a gubernatorial candidate. You should know better than that.”

Cruz read from the book in September while on the U.S. Senate floor during a 21-hour speech.

McCain Says Clinton Would Win Election Today

February 21, 2014 at 8:00 am EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Sen. John McCain (R-AZ) “predicted if voters headed to the polls for the 2016 elections tomorrow, Hillary Clinton would be most likely be elected president,” CNN reports.

Said McCain: “I would bet, my friend, as much as I hate to admit it, that right now – this is why we have campaigns – but right now, if the election were tomorrow, Hillary Clinton would most likely be the president of the United States.”

A new Gallup Poll finds Clinton with a 59% favorable rating.
