Cuccinelli Donates Value of Gifts to Charity

September 10, 2013 at 3:10 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Ken Cuccinelli (R) “took steps to shed any remaining ties with Star Scientific CEO Jonnie Williams Sr. by donating to charity the cash equivalent of the $18,000 in gifts he’s taken from the troubled dietary supplement maker,” the Richmond Times-Dispatch reports.

“The move is a significant strategy shift for Cuccinelli, trailing Democrat Terry McAuliffe in the polls in a bitter and contentious election in which the ethics of both men have been challenged by the other.”

An explanatory video from Cuccinelli shows how damaging he thinks this has been to his campaign.

Majority Think Obama’s Foreign Policy No Better Than Bush’s

September 10, 2013 at 2:01 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

A new Reason-Rupe poll finds President Obama’s standing on foreign policy “has taken such a hit” that 64% of Americans — including 68% of independents and 41% of Democrats — believe his handling of foreign policy is worse than, or the same as, former President George W. Bush’s handling of foreign policy.

Just 32% of Americans say President Obama is handling foreign policy better than Bush did.

Hagan Looks Strong as GOP Can’t Settle on a Challenger

September 10, 2013 at 1:27 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

A new Public Policy Polling survey suggests that it doesn’t matter who the Republicans put forward to challenge Sen. Kay Hagan (D-NC) because she has a wide lead over all of them.

However, “there’s still strong reason to think this will be a close race. Voters continue to be pretty closely divided on her job performance, with 43% approving and 39% disapproving. And the Republicans are being hurt by low name recognition at this point, with none of the potential candidates known to even half of the electorate. The race is likely to tighten up a good bit once the GOP settles on a candidate and that person becomes better known, but for now Hagan looks like she’s in good shape.”

New York City Faces Massive Voting Glitches

September 10, 2013 at 12:49 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“As voters headed to the polls on Tuesday morning, problems with decades-old voting machines were reported in polling stations across the city,” the New York Times reports.

“From Wall Street to Grand Army Plaza in Brooklyn, voters arrived at polling stations to find that none of the lever machines were working. Even with small crowds, voters described delays as workers struggled with jammed and broken equipment. In many cases, voters resorted to an even older technology: pen and paper.”

Hopefully someone is saying the Election Administrator’s Prayer.

Missouri Governor Turns Tax Debate Against GOP

September 10, 2013 at 12:47 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“As a Democrat facing a State Legislature with veto-proof Republican majorities, Gov. Jay Nixon of Missouri has not claimed big victories lately. So when he began stumping the state against a deep Republican tax cut that he had vetoed, he might have seemed to be on a political fool’s errand,” the New York Times reports.

” But over the summer, Mr. Nixon has turned the debate away from the Republican argument that lower taxes bring jobs and recast the tax cut as one that would hurt education and mental health services. The state’s school boards have rallied to his side. More than 100 of them have passed resolutions supporting the veto. And with a veto session set to begin on Wednesday, it is the supporters of the tax cut who are now pessimistic.”

September 10, 2013 at 11:44 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

A new Harper Polling survey in South Dakota finds former Gov. Mike Rounds (R) starts the U.S. Senate race with a sizable 52% to 38% lead over Rick Weiland (D), a former aide to Senator Tom Daschle (D-SD).

McConnell Opposes Syria Strike

September 10, 2013 at 11:33 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) “announced his opposition to authorizing strikes on Syria at the same time that it was becoming clearer that the Senate may not proceed with an outright authorization resolution,” Roll Call reports.

“McConnell, who is up for re-election in 2014 and facing a conservative challenger, is the only one of the “big four” congressional leaders to oppose striking Syria in response to intelligence suggesting that Syrian President Bashar al-Assad used chemical weapons against his own people.”

How Would You Vote?

Support Fades for Syria Attack

September 10, 2013 at 5:22 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

A new Wall Street Journal/NBC News poll finds President Obama’s push for Congress to authorize military action in Syria “faces headwinds from an American public that increasingly is wary of overseas entanglements and doubtful that an attack would benefit the U.S.”

Key findings: “Just 33% of those polled said Congress should approve Mr. Obama’s request to attack Syria, while less than a quarter thinks military action is in the national interest.”

Obama Push to Attack Syria Takes Detour

September 10, 2013 at 5:17 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

President Obama’s campaign for an attack on Syria “took an unexpected turn as his administration inadvertently gave the Assad regime a potential way out that spawned second thoughts on Capitol Hill and enthusiasm among international opponents of a military strike,” the Wall Street Journal reports.

“After Secretary of State John Kerry suggested in off-the-cuff comments that President Bashar al-Assad could avert an attack by promptly handing his chemical weapons to the international community, Russia declared its support and quickly got Damascus on board.”

The New York Times reports Obama’s statements “about the haphazardly constructed plan appeared to offer him an exit strategy for a military strike he had been reluctant to order, and it came as support on Capitol Hill for a resolution authorizing force was slipping.”

Politico: “Obama’s unsteady handling of the Syria crisis has been an avert-your-gaze moment in the history of the modern presidency — highlighting his unsettled views and unattractive options in a way that has caused his enemies to cackle and supporters to cringe.”

New York City Mayoral Primary Hurtles to Finish

September 10, 2013 at 4:39 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

New York City voters “will take the first big step toward choosing a successor to Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg, in a contest that has increasingly turned on crucial elements of his legacy on public safety and income inequality,” the New York Times reports.

“But despite a widely publicized free-for-all among multiple candidates, fewer than one in four Democrats and Republicans are expected to vote in the party primaries.”

Colorado Voters Test Power of Gun Lobby

September 10, 2013 at 4:36 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Two Colorado state lawmakers who supported tougher gun control laws following the shooting massacre at a movie theater last year face recall elections on Tuesday, with legislators across the country on both sides of the debate awaiting the outcome,” Reuters reports.

“The recall races, the first in Colorado history, are part of a national debate over gun control that so far has resulted in few new laws being passed. If the recalls succeed, they could have a chilling effect on lawmakers throughout the country the next time they vote on gun control measures.”

Denver Post: “A final, frantic effort is underway to get voters to the polls Tuesday in two state Senate districts where Democratic lawmakers face ouster for stricter gun laws passed in the 2013 legislative session.”

Kasich’s Next Act

September 10, 2013 at 4:29 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Ohio Gov. John Kasich (R) “looked like a political defeat waiting to happen in November 2011, after a state ballot measure that he pushed limiting union rights went down to a crushing 62 percent to 38 percent defeat,” Stu Rothenberg reports.

“But Kasich’s poll numbers have been rising ever since, and Buckeye State insiders believe that the former boy wonder of the Ohio GOP has bigger plans for himself if he wins a second term next year. They believe that the governor — and former nine-term House member — will mount another presidential run.”

Most Question Obama’s Leadership on Syria

September 9, 2013 at 9:00 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

When President Obama addresses the nation Tuesday night about Syria, a new McClatchy-Marist poll finds “he will confront the most unfriendly political landscape of his presidency, one where opposition knows no boundaries and Democrats, Republicans, whites, blacks, Hispanics, old, young, men and women all are deeply skeptical of the mission.”

“A solid majority of voters opposes airstrikes and wants Congress to reject Obama’s request for approval… A majority thinks he does not have a clear idea of what he’s doing with Syria. The ranks of Americans who approve of the way he’s handling foreign policy has dropped to the lowest level since he assumed office. And an overwhelming majority insists he stand down should Congress vote no.”
