Bonus Quote of the Day

April 29, 2013 at 2:15 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“No. I think it would have been a much closer race, but
I’ll tell you President Obama ran a great race and that campaigns
matter.”

— Sen. John McCain (R-AZ), quoted by the Huffington Post, on Vice President Joe Biden’s claim McCain would have won the 2008 presidential election if not for the economic crisis.

Branstad Suggests King Should Not Run for Senate

April 29, 2013 at 1:47 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Iowa Gov. Terry Branstad (R) appeared to suggest that Rep. Steve King (R-IA) “either is not running or should not run for the U.S. Senate,” Radio Iowa reports.

Said Branstad: “I really believe that Iowans want somebody that will serve in the Senate that will be an Iowa problem solver, not another congressman. You know congress is a mess. We’ve seen them spend a trillion dollars more than they take in every year and so the Democrats have decided, ‘Well, we’re going to send up another congressman.’ That’s the last thing we need is another congressman in the United States Senate.”

Conservatives are Winning in the States

April 29, 2013 at 1:43 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Jeb Bush: “The conventional wisdom coming from the 2012 election was the Republican Party is in decline. We lost on messaging, tone and policies that alienated growing minority communities. What that narrative misses is that conservative principles and Republican leadership are thriving in the states, providing the way forward for the GOP.”

“There now are 30 Republican governors, the highest number in 13 years. In 26 states, Republicans hold a majority of the seats in both the House and Senate chambers.”

Quote of the Day

April 29, 2013 at 1:00 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“The Boston bombing provided the opportunity for the government to turn what should have been a police investigation into a military-style occupation of an American city. This unprecedented move should frighten us as much or more than the attack itself.”

— Former Rep. Ron Paul (R-TX), quoted by Politico.

Peters Will Run for Senate in Michigan

April 29, 2013 at 12:30 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Rep. Gary Peters (D-MI) will announce his campaign for Senate later this week, giving Democrats a top candidate to run for the open seat in Michigan, Roll Call reports. He is not expected to face a primary.

The Cloakroom: Republicans struggle to find decent candidates.

Iowa Lawmakers Seek to Penalize Judges for Ruling

April 29, 2013 at 11:20 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

A group of Iowa Republican lawmakers have attached an amendment to a judicial branch budget bill that would reduce the salaries of the four remaining justices who were part of the groundbreaking case to legalize same-sex marriage in the state, the Sioux City Journal reports.

Their salaries would be reduced from about $163,000 annually to $25,000, the amount legislators are paid.

Said state Rep. Larry Sheets (R): “If the justices are going to behave like legislators, they ought to receive lawmakers’ pay.”

Markey Leads in Key Bellwethers

April 29, 2013 at 11:15 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

A new Suffolk Poll finds Rep. Edward Markey (D-MA) is crushing Rep. Stephen Lynch (D-MA) in three key Democratic bellwethers.

Said pollster David Paleologos: “Despite recent polling showing this race close and perceptions that the momentum has moved to Lynch following the last two debates, these findings point out the opposite – that Ed Markey has a distinct advantage as the primary approaches. Voter turnout ultimately will determine the outcome. However, given what we know now, Lynch would have to carry his home district by an unprecedented margin and also compete aggressively in Markey’s home district to offset Markey’s distinct advantage.”

Former Lawmakers Seek Evidence of Space Aliens

April 29, 2013 at 11:10 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Former Rep. Carolyn Cheeks Kilpatrick (D) told the Detroit News that she’s “excited about presiding over a week’s worth of testimony about the existence of extraterrestrials.”

Kilpatrick “signed up with five other former members of Congress to listen to testimony aimed at proving alien contact with Earth and a government effort to cover it up.”

Also on the panel are former Sen. Mike Gravel (D-AK), as well as former Reps. Lynn Woolsey (D-CA), Darlene
Hooley (D-OR), Roscoe Bartlett (R-MD) and Merrill Cook (R-UT).

Senators Facing Backlash Over Gun Vote

April 29, 2013 at 10:11 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

New polls from Public Policy Polling in Alaska, Arizona, Nevada, and Ohio find serious backlash
against the five senators who voted against background checks. Each has seen their approval numbers decline, and voters
say they’re less likely to support them the next time they’re up for
reelection.

The Week: Senate Democrats still clueless on gun control.

Is Mark Sanford Really the Favorite?

April 29, 2013 at 10:05 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Most South Carolina political observers still see former Gov. Mark Sanford (R) as the special election favorite over Elizabeth Colbert Busch, despite a poll showing the former governor trailing by nine points, The State reports.

Harry Enten: “Over the past ten years, there have been 30 non-candidate/party sponsored polls conducted in the final two weeks before 18 off-cycle special congressional elections… 27 out of 30 times, the candidate leading in the poll won most of the votes in the special election. In 26 of the 30 special election surveys, the polling error was less than 9pt – Colbert Busch’s lead. The polls’ average error was only 4pt, and the median even lower, at 3pt. These margins leave little room for Sanford. He would need an error of at least 9pt, which has happened only 13% of the time. He would also need that error to be in his favor, which means he’s looking at a 7% likelihood. That’s not outside the realm of possibility, but it’s a long shot.”

Where are the Black Governors and Senators?

April 29, 2013 at 10:00 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Jonathan Martin:
“More than five years after Barack Obama won the Iowa caucuses and
demolished the notion that white voters wouldn’t support a black
presidential candidate, progress for other African-American politicians
remains elusive. Even as the country elected and reelected Obama, making
it seem increasingly unremarkable to have a black family in the White
House, African-Americans are scarce and bordering on extinct in the U.S.
Senate and governorships. The president is indeed exceptional — but in
the wrong sense of the phrase as it applies to other black politicians.”

Paul Endorses Broun for Senate

April 29, 2013 at 9:45 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Former Rep. Ron Paul (R-TX) endorsed Rep. Paul Broun (R-GA) “in what
is shaping up to be Republicans’ widest and most unpredictable Senate
primary,” Roll Call reports.

Biden Wants Torture Report Released

April 29, 2013 at 9:18 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Vice President Joe Biden said that he “supports
making a classified Senate Intelligence Committee report on torture and
enhanced interrogation more available to the public,” Roll Call writes.

Colbert Busch Tweets Uncovered

April 29, 2013 at 9:01 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

While too much is possibly known about former South Carolina Gov. Mark Sanford (R), John Fund notes that’s not a problem for his special election challenger, Elizabeth Colbert Busch (D), who remains a mystery.

“The local and national media haven’t delved into Colbert Busch beyond her platitudes, and so far she’s avoided being tagged with any liberal labels. Her success at flying under the radar may serve as a model for other Democratic candidates in 2014. She plans to participate in only one debate during three months of campaigning. Some 500 of her pre-campaign tweets have been airbrushed away but thanks to the nonpartisan Sunlight Foundation have been returned to the public record.”

Christie Has No Regrets for Clashing with GOP

April 29, 2013 at 8:09 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie told MSNBC that “he didn’t regret his actions in the wake of Hurricane Sandy, even though they caused intra-party strife at a critical juncture in the 2012 presidential election.”

Said Christie: “I say the same thing to all my critics, no matter where they are in the spectrum, and that is that I’ve got a job to do. There was nothing else that ever crossed my mind in the days after.”

Cuomo Won’t Run if Clinton Does

April 29, 2013 at 7:55 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo (D) “has quietly told associates that he is resigned to the fact that he can’t run for president in 2016 if Hillary Rodham Clinton enters the race, as is widely expected,” the New York Post reports.

“While Cuomo has repeatedly claimed he has no interest in running for
president, his sharp turn to the political left this year after two
years governing as a moderate convinced many Democrats and Republicans
that he was laying the groundwork for a presidential campaign.”

Large Majority Wanted Gun Background Checks Bill

April 29, 2013 at 7:54 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

A new Gallup Poll finds 65% of Americans say the U.S. Senate should have passed the measure that would have expanded background checks for gun purchases, while 29% agree with the Senate’s failure to pass the measure.

Black Voter Turnout Surpassed Whites in 2012

April 29, 2013 at 7:22 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“America’s blacks voted at a higher rate than other minority groups in 2012 and by most measures surpassed the white turnout for the first time, reflecting a deeply polarized presidential election in which blacks strongly supported Barack Obama while many whites stayed home,” the AP reports.

“Had people voted last November at the same rates they did in 2004, when black turnout was below its current historic levels, Republican Mitt Romney would have won narrowly.”
