Nearly Half Find Surveillance Acceptable

June 12, 2013 at 1:58 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

A new Reuters/Ipsos poll shows that nearly half of all Americans say the U.S. government’s broad surveillance tactics are acceptable within limits and also found widespread concern about the methods that were revealed last week.

The poll also found that “few were completely untroubled by the news that the National Security Agency has been secretly monitoring telephone and Internet activity of millions of Americans. More than one in three of those surveyed said the activity was completely unacceptable. Others sought a middle ground, saying the government needed to balance national security with personal privacy and explain why the activity was necessary.”

Should 2016 Democrats Break with Obama?

June 12, 2013 at 1:54 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Walter Shapiro makes the case that 2016 Democratic White House hopefuls — Hillary Clitnon and Joe Biden aside — should speak out against flawed Obama policies like NSA spying and the terribly mishandled sequester.

“Yes, it’s counter-intuitive to break–however gently–with a popular president of your own party. But, in case you haven’t noticed, it’s also counter-intuitive for you to think about going up in 2016 against someone like Hillary Clinton or Biden.”

“Running for president is not for the fainthearted. But there is a void in the Democratic Party waiting to be filled by a credible figure on Obama’s left flank. And if you don’t have the courage to fill it in 2016, trust me, someone else will.”

June 12, 2013 at 1:52 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker (R) said he “will sign a measure that’s quickly working its way through the Republican-controlled Legislature that would require women seeking an abortion to undergo an ultrasound,” the AP reports.

Bloomberg Seeks to Block Donations to Some Democrats

June 12, 2013 at 1:44 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg “is intensifying his pressure on Congress to enact stricter gun laws by asking some of his biggest supporters to withhold the one thing politicians love most about residents of the Big Apple: Their money,” the Washington Post reports.

“Bloomberg is sending a letter to more than 1,000 top New York-area campaign donors on Wednesday, urging them to withhold donations from four Senate Democrats who voted against a bipartisan gun bill that failed to advance in the Senate.”

Former Lawmaker Convicted on Corruption Charges

June 12, 2013 at 1:09 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

A federal jury convicted former Rep. Rick Renzi (R-AZ) “on more than a half dozen corruption charges accusing him of using his office for personal financial gain and looting a family insurance business to help pay for his 2002 campaign,” the Washington Post reports.

What Happened to Gun Control?

June 12, 2013 at 9:00 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

The Week: “This week marks the six-month anniversary of the Sandy Hook massacre that left 26 dead and served as a rallying cry for supporters of stricter gun laws. To mark that somber occasion, gun control groups are planning to fan out across the country in hopes of jump-starting a drive for new legislation…”

“Yet that renewed effort highlights the fact that Congress still hasn’t passed any new gun laws. And judging by Congress’ legislative agenda, as well as polls that have shown Americans returning to their past indifference on the issue, the prospect of gun control legislation getting a second wind seems unlikely.”

Memo Claims Cover Up of Prostitution at State Department

June 12, 2013 at 8:30 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

An Inspector General’s memo says senior State Department and Diplomatic Security officials “may have covered up or stopped investigations of inappropriate or even criminal misconduct by staff,” CNN reports.

Among the claims: “An active U.S. ambassador ‘routinely ditched his protective security detail in order to solicit sexual favors from both prostitutes and minor children’… The ambassador’s protective detail and others ‘were well aware of the behavior’ … When a diplomatic security officer tried to investigate, undersecretary of state for management Patrick Kennedy allegedly ordered the investigator ‘not to open a formal investigation.'”

— Former Rep. Ron Paul (R-TX), quoted by the Huffington Post, on the safety of NSA leaker Edward Snowden.

NSA Disclosures Put Awkward Light on Previous Denials

June 12, 2013 at 7:00 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

New York Times: “For years, intelligence officials have tried to debunk what they called a popular myth about the National Security Agency: that its electronic net routinely sweeps up information about millions of Americans…. But since the disclosures last week showing that the agency does indeed routinely collect data on the phone calls of millions of Americans, Obama administration officials have struggled to explain what now appear to have been misleading past statements.”

Meanwhile, the Huffington Post notes Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-NV) chastised lawmakers who claimed they were in the dark about the programs: “For senators to complain that ‘I didn’t know this was happening,’ we’ve had many, many meetings that have been both classified and unclassified that members have been invited to.”

Boehner Will Insist on Cuts to Raise Debt Limit

June 12, 2013 at 6:30 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Speaker John Boehner (R-OH) is “pushing back against White House demands for no-frills legislation on the federal borrowing cap, is calling for another round of spending cuts beyond the sequester as part of any agreement to raise the debt limit,” Roll Call reports.

Said Boehner: “I believe that if we’re going to increase the debt limit, there ought to be cuts and reforms in place that are greater than the increase in the debt limit.”

Wonk Wire: The fiscal policy debate is out of whack.

Jackson Misspelled Title of His Own Book

June 12, 2013 at 3:41 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Virginia Lt. Gov. nominee E.W. Jackson (R) misspelled the title of his 2008 book, Ten Commandments to an Extraordinary Life: Making Your Dreams Come True.

The book has a typo on its front cover, with one “m” missing in “commandments,” the Huffington Post reports.

Quote of the Day

June 12, 2013 at 3:39 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“This is not your father’s Republican Party. It really is a fundamentally different party. There’s never been as much distance, at least since I’ve been alive, distance between where the mainstream of the Republican congressional party is and the Democratic Party is. It’s a chasm. It’s a gigantic chasm.”

— Vice President Joe Biden, quoted by the Huffington Post.

North Carolina Bill Would Eliminate Handgun Permits

June 12, 2013 at 3:26 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

A major gun-rights bill in North Carolina “took an unexpected turn with a proposal to eliminate the law that requires people receive a permit from their county sheriff before they can buy a handgun,” the Raleigh News and Observer reports.

The bill “still requires a permit to carry concealed handguns but expands the places that those weapons can be taken: all educational property, not just public colleges and universities as an earlier version proposed; private schools, unless they prohibit weapons; parades and funeral processions, unless they’re expressly prohibited.”

Noem Decides Against Senate Bid in South Dakota

June 12, 2013 at 3:22 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Republicans are now on track to avoid a costly, high-profile primary in the South Dakota Senate race next year,” Roll Call reports.

Rep. Kristi Noem (R-SD) announced she will seek re-election rather than challenge former Gov. Mike Rounds (R) in the primary for the open seat. Her move clears a major hurdle in the GOP’s path to picking up the seat of retiring Sen. Tim Johnson (D-SD).

Issa Refuses to Release Full IRS Transcripts

June 12, 2013 at 2:35 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

A week after he released partial transcripts of interviews with IRS officials involved in the scandal surrounding the targeting of conservative groups, House Oversight and Government Reform Committee Chairman Darell Issa said releasing the full transcripts would be “reckless” and “irresponsible,” the Huffington Post reports.

U.S. Disrupts Al-Qaeda Site

June 12, 2013 at 2:18 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“U.S. intelligence operatives covertly sabotaged a prominent al-Qaeda online magazine last month in an apparent attempt to sow confusion among the group’s followers,” the Washington Post reports.

“The operation succeeded, at least temporarily, in thwarting publication of the latest issue of Inspire, the English-language magazine distributed by al-Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula. When it appeared online, the text on the second page was garbled and the following 20 pages were blank. The sabotaged version was quickly removed from the online forum that hosted it, said independent analysts who track Islamist militant Web sites.”
