Clinton Has Huge Support Among Democrats

June 8, 2014 at 9:51 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

A new ABC News-Washington Post poll gives Hillary Clinton a commanding lead in the race for the Democratic presidential nomination – with 69% of Democrats and Democratic-leaning independents supporting her.

“Clinton also fares well in public perceptions in the new poll: 67% of Americans view her as a strong leader, 60% say she’s honest and trustworthy, and 59% say she has new ideas for the country’s future.”

Rove Stays in the Shadows This Time

June 8, 2014 at 9:45 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Los Angeles Times: “Not that long ago, Karl Rove emerged as a mastermind of a new type of campaign spending, leading a wave of outside groups whose ability to pour money into the 2010 midterm election helped Republicans gain control of the House and bolster GOP ranks in the Senate.”

“This midterm election cycle, though, is shaping up differently. Rove’s two funding groups, American Crossroads, a super PAC that discloses its spending, and Crossroads GPS, a nonprofit that does not, are playing more of a supporting role… The new stars of the dark money circuit are the billionaire Koch brothers, whose Americans for Prosperity has funneled a jaw-dropping $35 million so far into the midterm election cycle, much of it spent even before the first primary ballots were cast this spring.”

Clinton’s Book Paves the Way for Another Campaign

June 8, 2014 at 9:21 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Dan Balz writes that Hillary Clinton’s new memoir, Hard Choices, “is a methodical march through the challenges she encountered as the nation’s top diplomat. Beyond the diplomacy, it includes lighter moments and self-deprecating asides as she seeks to project both a deep understanding of the world and a warm, human side to her personality.”

“Compared with her book Living History, published in 2003, Hard Choices is a more interesting read, enriched not simply by her nearly million miles of international travel to 112 countries but more by her accounts of scores of conversations with world leaders as the administration grappled with one challenge after another. Through nearly 600 pages, she comes across less a visionary and more a practical-minded problem solver.”

New York Times: “The book itself, however, turns out to be a subtle, finely calibrated work that provides a portrait of the former secretary of state and former first lady as a heavy-duty policy wonk.”

Politico compiles “10 key passages” from Clinton’s book.

De Blasio Wants Democratic Convention in Brooklyn

June 7, 2014 at 6:59 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio (D) “does not think there are enough Democrats in Brooklyn. So come summer of 2016, he is hoping to import about 35,000 more,” the New York Times reports.

“The de Blasio administration on Friday proposed that when the Democratic Party gathers to crown its next presidential nominee, it do so in the mayor’s home borough, a cradle of the resurgent left that has morphed from a symbol of the working class into a gritty, global arbiter of cool.”

“A Democratic convention in Brooklyn, which has some of the most liberal pockets in one of the country’s most liberal cities, would be a stark departure from the recent tradition of political parties hosting their conventions in swing states like Florida and Colorado.”

June 6, 2014 at 5:03 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

A federal court has overturned Wisconsin’s ban on same sex marriage, the AP reports.

“The American Civil Liberties Union filed a lawsuit on behalf of eight gay couples in February challenging Wisconsin’s constitutional ban on gay marriage. The lawsuit contends the state’s ban denies gay couples the civil rights that other married couples enjoy.”

GOP Gives Up on Obamacare

Wonk Wire: Obamacare war ends with a whimper

Michelle Obama for Senate?

June 6, 2014 at 9:58 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Keith Koffler: “Sure, Obama cares strongly about the things she is doing. That she does care in fact begs another question: Is caring all that’s going on here? Does she have political ambitions that would allow her to pursue an agenda while working to cement her husband’s legacy? Speculation about a possible political future for Michelle Obama has naturally centered on the White House. But that’s the wrong place — at least for now. Illinois has a Republican senator, Mark Kirk, and he is up for reelection in 2016. He’ll be formidable, particularly given his brave recovery from a stroke. But Illinois is a heavily Democratic state, and the race could be close. No Illinois Democratic candidate would bring the star power and nationwide fundraising capacity that Obama would. … She could represent the Democrats’ best chance to pick up a desperately needed — and winnable — seat.”

Bonus Quote of the Day

“I wasn’t alone in getting it wrong. But I still got it wrong. Plain and simple.”

— Hillary Clinton, quoted in her forthcoming memoir, about voting to authorize the Iraq war.

Close Race for Massachusetts Governor

June 6, 2014 at 9:23 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

A new Boston Globe poll in Massachusetts finds Martha Coakley (D) leading Charlie Baker (R) in the race for governor by just five points, 37% to 32%.

Said pollster John Della Volpe: “We are now in a real horse race. Now it’s within the margin of error.”

What’s Missing from Clinton’s Book

June 6, 2014 at 9:19 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

First Read: “There’s an important thing missing from these highlights: direct criticism of President Obama or those in his team… Clinton’s book was always expected to be an important tell about her 2016 ambitions: If she aired dirty laundry, she probably isn’t going to run (because such criticisms wouldn’t help her with the Democratic base). But if she was 95% positive, she probably is going to run. Well, I think we have our answer here, right? This is someone who’s still involved in politics, rather than an ex-politician who’s ready to dish and tell.”

Quote of the Day

June 6, 2014 at 8:58 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“I’m a little bit disturbed by some of the Republicans out there who keep saying this has never happened before. That is not entirely true. If you look historically, at the end of any conflict, you have a swap of prisoners, and that happens. Usually our side will release people that are less than desirable in order to get some of our people back in these swaps. So I would suggest that anybody who’s being hyper-critical about this, they should look at the history. This has happened before.”

— Rep. Raul Labrador (R-ID), quoted by the Huffington Post, on President Obama securing the release of Sgt. Bowe Bergdahl.
