The Guardian: “Residents at Trump Plaza, a 40-story high-rise in the suburban New York city of New Rochelle, are pushing for the building to be renamed and to escape a near-two decade association with the legally-troubled ex-president and real estate mogul.”
Netanyahu Condemns U.S. Plan to Blacklist Military Unit
“Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu condemned a reported U.S. plan to sanction an ultra-Orthodox army battalion over human rights abuses in the West Bank, a move which could fuel tensions over Israel’s war against Hamas in Gaza,” Bloomberg reports.
Johnson Draws Praise for Defying His Party
“The accolades directed at Speaker Mike Johnson in recent days for finally defying the right wing of his party and allowing an aid bill for Ukraine to move through the House might have seemed a tad excessive,” the New York Times reports.
“After all, a speaker’s entire job is to move legislation through the House, and as Saturday’s vote to pass the bill demonstrated, the Ukraine measure had overwhelming support. But Mr. Johnson’s feat was not so different from that of another embattled Republican who faced a difficult choice under immense pressure from hard-right Republicans and was saluted as a hero for simply doing his job: former Vice President Mike Pence.”
Trump’s Legal Bills Drain Millions
“Donald Trump is picking up his fundraising pace even as he fights criminal charges in four cases and appeals a nearly half-billion dollar civil fraud judgment against him in New York,” the Washington Post reports.
“But his legal expenses continue to be a tremendous burden on his campaign and its allied groups, the latest campaign finance records show, accounting for 26 percent of the spending in March by his political committees.”
Trump Rally Is Called Off Because of Storms
“After former President Donald Trump sat in a courtroom in New York for much of the last week, Saturday night was supposed to herald a return to the campaign trail and the large rallies where he often gives long, freewheeling speeches,” the New York Times reports.
“With hundreds gathered on the tarmac at an airport in Wilmington, N.C., Mr. Trump’s campaign was building anticipation. Two hours before he was set to speak, the campaign sent a fund-raising blast with a message from Mr. Trump: ‘They can’t keep me off stage! Did they think I would run and hide?’”
“Ninety minutes later, the skies darkened to charcoal and lightning flashed. As thunderstorms swept toward the area and the National Weather Service issued watches and warnings concerning dangerous winds and hail, the rally was canceled over safety concerns.”
Proud Boys Appear at Trump Rally
“At least 10 men wearing the uniform of the Proud Boys, a violent extremist group, appeared outside the entrance of a rally here for presumptive Republican nominee Donald Trump, prompting condemnation from President Biden’s campaign,” the Washington Post reports.
“The men — wearing black and yellow shirts, hats and masks identifying them as Proud Boys — were seen walking along the line of vendors selling Trump apparel and souvenirs around the time that the gates opened for a planned Trump rally here.”
Trump Deflates
David Frum: “On aid to Ukraine, Trump got his way for 16 months. When Democrats held the majority in the House of Representatives in 2022, they approved four separate aid requests for Ukraine, totaling $74 billion. As soon as Trump’s party took control of the House, in January 2023, the aid stopped. Every Republican officeholder understood: Those who wished to show loyalty to Trump must side against Ukraine.”
“At the beginning of this year, Trump was able even to blow up the toughest immigration bill seen in decades—simply to deny President Joe Biden a bipartisan win. Individual Senate Republicans might grumble, but with Trump opposed, the border-security deal disintegrated.”
“Three months later, Trump’s party in Congress has rebelled against him—and not on a personal payoff to some oddball Trump loyalist, but on one of Trump’s most cherished issues, his siding with Russia against Ukraine.”
Michael Avenatti Has Been Talking to Trump’s Lawyers
“Disgraced Stormy Daniels’ attorney Michael Avenatti has been in contact with Donald Trump’s legal defense team and is ready and willing to testify against his former client,” the New York Post reports.
Avenatti “is currently serving a 19-year sentence for extortion, tax evasion, fraud, embezzlement and other federal crimes.”
Said Avenatti: “I’d be more than happy to testify, I don’t know that I will be called to testify, but I have been in touch with Trump’s defense for the better part of year.”
U.S. May Send New Military Advisers to Ukraine
“The U.S. is considering sending additional military advisers to the embassy in Kyiv, the latest show of American commitment to Ukraine as Russia appears to be gaining momentum in the two-year conflict,” Politico reports.
Russian Politician Admits to Murdering His Wife
A Russian politician confessed to murdering his wife in a bitter post on social media, the Daily Beast reports.
Said Yevgeny Nikolsky: “When a person to whom you have given your entire soul for years betrays you, this should not go unpunished. I don’t care what happens to me, but the lying wretch got what she deserved.”
House Passes Ukraine and Israel Aid
The House has passed a $61 billion aid package for the war in Ukraine, sending the bill to the Senate for likely consideration next week, Punchbowl News reports.
The bill passed 311 to 112.
A stunning 112 Republicans voted no, while every Democrat backed the bill.
Meanwhile, a $26 billion aid package for Israel passed 366 to 58, with 37 Democrats and 21 Republicans voting against the bill.
Mike Johnson Careens Toward Uncharted Territory
“Mike Johnson is drawing closer to a career-defining choice for a Republican speaker — whether to rely on Democratic help to stay in the job,” Politico reports.
“With three Republicans endorsing a motion to terminate his leadership, Johnson will need Democratic support to survive if Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA) follows through on her threat to force a vote on his removal. And more conservatives could follow, enraged by Johnson’s strategy on his foreign aid package.”
“But if he can weather this storm, even his critics say he may be able to keep his gavel the rest of the term.”
Ratcheting pressure on Republicans, Steve Bannon called for the removal of Johnson as speaker last night.
Quote of the Day
“Every Democrat who walks across the aisle to try to save the Republican speaker is going to cause two or three more Republicans to join the effort because, at that point, you’re… ceding control of the House of Representatives to a contingent of Democrats.”
— Rep. Thomas Massie (R-KY), quoted by Politico.
Trump Doesn’t Talk About the Pandemic
Boston Globe: “The deadly pandemic encompassed a little more than a fifth of Trump’s presidency, but you’d never know it from listening to him on the 2024 campaign trail. He rarely mentions COVID. When he does, it’s usually a brief comment that the pandemic derailed some of his presidential plans like an untimely speed bump. Then he’ll complain he doesn’t get enough credit for doing a great job on COVID — an assessment that most public health experts strongly dispute.”
Trump’s Delayed Reckoning
Sean Wilentz: “The Supreme Court has not yet decided whether to grant Donald Trump criminal immunity — but its handling of the case has already worked in his favor.”
Giuliani’s Son Hit With Subpoenas Over Hidden Assets
“Rudy Giuliani’s creditors expanded their probe into the former New York mayor’s finances, filing more than a dozen subpoenas in his bankruptcy case on Friday,” Bloomberg reports.
“The formal requests, filed Friday in the US Bankruptcy Court for the Southern District of New York, were made by Giuliani’s official committee of unsecured creditors, who are seeking to uncover any hidden assets they believe should be distributed to them.”

GOP Colleagues Strike Back at Hardliners
“Conservatives have made it abundantly clear they detest Speaker Mike Johnson’s decision to work with Democrats. To other Republicans, it’s a necessary evil — specifically because of those hardliner colleagues,” Politico reports.
“Many centrist Republicans said on Friday that Johnson has been left with no other choice, given threats to his speakership and unwieldy demands for border security language that could never pass the Democratic-led Senate and President Joe Biden.”
