Waiting for Caro

April 19, 2012 at 10:46 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Smithsonian Magazine: “It has become one of the great suspense stories in American letters, the nonfiction equivalent of Ahab and the white whale: Robert Caro and his leviathan, Lyndon Baines Johnson. Caro, perhaps the pre-eminent historian of 20th-century America, and Johnson, one of the most transformative 20th-century presidents — in ways triumphant and tragic — and one of the great divided souls in American history or literature.”

Just 10 more days until Passage of Power is out.

Government Gone Wild?

April 19, 2012 at 10:15 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

First Read: “In American politics, there are actual problems and perceived problems. And when it comes to that exorbitant GSA trip to Las Vegas or the Secret Service prostitution scandal in Colombia, those are perceived problems — that somehow the government isn’t working and a handful of employees aren’t taking their jobs seriously. The question, in this election year, is whether that perception hurts the guy running the government.”

“Make no mistake: These scandals aren’t coming from the Obama White House or from the aides working closest with the president… But the attention on these GSA and Secret Service stories only sullies the government’s reputation. Bottom line: The government can’t afford another one to surface again anytime soon, and neither can the party that has come to represent the idea that government is at least part of the solution to collective problems — the Democrats.”

Gingrich Still Has Secret Service Protection

April 19, 2012 at 10:05 am EDT By Taegan Goddard 1 Comment

Because he’s still officially a presidential candidate, Newt Gingrich is “likely costing the taxpayers tens of thousands of dollars a day with his Secret Service detail on the campaign trail,” the Daily Caller reports.

Gingrich recently had three people on his personal security detail, though sometimes there are “many more.”

Raese Compares No Smoking to Hitler’s Jewish Star

April 19, 2012 at 10:00 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

West Virginia U.S. Senate candidate John Raese (R) compared no smoking laws to one of Adolf Hitler’s most notorious policies.

Said Raese: “I don’t want government telling me what I can do and what I can’t do because I’m an American. But in Monongalia County you can’t smoke a cigarette, you can’t smoke a cigar, you can’t do anything… I have to put a huge sticker on my buildings to say this is a smoke free environment. This is brought to you by the government of Monongalia County. OK? Remember Hitler used to put Star of David on everybody’s lapel, remember that? Same thing.”

Pryor Will Run Again in 2014

April 19, 2012 at 9:54 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Sen. Mark Pryor (D-AR) has been “quietly making it official” that he’ll seek re-election in 2014, the Arkansas Times reports.

A letter to friends which was described as a “somewhat rambling” eventually “got around to the point that he’d definitely be running in 2014. It noted that there’d been rumors that he would not run, that he might run for governor, that he might once have been interested in the presidency of the University of Arkansas. He said those rumors weren’t true, that his family was happy at their home in Little Rock and that he looked forward to another race.”

Secret Service Pre-Planned Party at Hotel

April 19, 2012 at 9:50 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Secret Service officials “planning a wild night of fun in Colombia did some of their own advance work last week, booking a party space at the Hotel Caribe before heading out to the night clubs,” ABC News reports.

“As first reported by ABC, the men went to the Pley Club brothel, where they drank expensive whiskey and bragged that they worked for President Obama. The men were also serviced by prostitutes at the club. But the night didn’t end there. The men brought women from the Pley Club back to the hotel and also picked up additional escorts from other clubs and venues around town, sources tell ABC News.”

A Mess for North Carolina Democrats

April 19, 2012 at 9:29 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

First Read: “Allegations of sexual harassment inside the North Carolina Democratic Party has turned into a mess for the state party, as well as the national one. Why? Because North Carolina is the convention state, thus ensuring that any problems or controversy there will be magnified. And it isn’t helping the Democrats that the state party chair, David Parker, is refusing to step down from his post.”

The Charlotte Observer reports the allegations are detailed in a letter just made public.

Quote of the Day

April 19, 2012 at 7:16 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“The debt number is alarming and gives you great concern, of course, because we’re moving toward the Greek-type numbers. My guess is, by the way, at the Democratic convention, he will not be appearing in front of Greek columns like in Denver. He won’t want to remind people of Greece.”

— Mitt Romney, in an interview on Fox News.

Obama Holds Small Lead Nationally

April 19, 2012 at 7:04 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

A new Quinnipiac poll shows President Obama holds a thin 46% to 42% lead nationally over Mitt
Romney in the presidential race.

Said pollster Peter Brown :”Obama has a big lead among women and is seen as the candidate most
in tune with their needs. He is seen as more in touch with average Americans. Republican
Romney seems to hold an edge on the economy – the top issue of the campaign – and holds his
own against the incumbent on being a strong leader. His opening is that by 56% to 38%
voters disapprove of the president’s handling of the economy.”

Perry Wants to Run Again in 2016

April 18, 2012 at 8:39 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Texas Gov. Rick Perry (R) told the CBS affiliate in Dallas that he’s going to give the “appropriate consideration” to running for re-election as governor in 2014 and said he was leaning toward running for president again in 2016.

Said Perry: “2016 is way down the road, but I’ll assure you one thing, if I decide to run for the presidency in 2016, I’ll be way in before the summer of 2016; 2015, even.”

Romney Holds Edge in New Hampshire

April 18, 2012 at 8:36 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

A new Dartmouth College poll in New Hampshire finds Mitt Romney edges President Obama in a general election match up, 44% to 42%.

A Romney-Rice Ticket?

April 18, 2012 at 8:29 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

A new CNN survey of Republican voter preferences for Mitt Romney’s vice presidential running mate finds Condoleeza Rice with 26% support, ahead of Rick Santorum at 21%, Marco Rubio at 14%, Chris Christie at 14%, and Paul Ryan at 8%.

Dan Amira: “Rice hasn’t been considered a very plausible contender in the Mitt Romney veepstakes so far, and perhaps with good reason. Rice was a central figure in the Bush administration, particularly in terms of homeland security and foreign policy, which are most prominently defined by the worst terrorist attack in American history and a widely unpopular war, respectively. And if the Obama campaign decides to portray a potential Romney presidency as a retread of the Bush years, putting one of Bush’s closest advisers on the ticket would be a big help.”

The Parties are Already Unified

April 18, 2012 at 3:24 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

While recent polls may disagree on whether President Obama or Mitt Romney is leading, Mark Blumenthal notes they all show both candidates getting an average of 88% to 90% support from members of their own parties.

John Sides:
“Remember when Obama was going to lose the support of all those Democrats dissatisfied with his weak-kneed compromises? And remember how Romney was going to struggle to win over the base because, like, ‘Anybody but Romney’ was 75% of the GOP? Well, here it is only April, and the bases are basically unified.”

Bonus Quote of the Day

April 18, 2012 at 2:51 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“I mean, it’s going to be the dirtiest campaign you’ve ever seen. I would say: Hide the children and check the plumbing because you’re going to have to shower several times a day.”

— Charles Krauthammer, in an interview on Fox News.

Nelson Leads Rivals in Florida

April 18, 2012 at 2:34 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Despite a dismal 36% approval rating, a new Public Policy Polling survey finds Sen. Bill Nelson (D-FL) continues to lead all of his potential Republican opponents by double digits.

Nelson leads Connie Mack (R) 47% to 37%, tops Mike McCalister (R) 47% to 35% and beat George LeMieux (R) 48% to 34%.

Most interesting: An astounding 33% of voters have no opinion about Nelson even after 12 years in the Senate.

Secret Service to Investigate Nugent’s Comments

April 18, 2012 at 2:00 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Musician Ted Nugent is set to meet tomorrow with the U.S. Secret Service regarding his controversial remarks about President Obama, USA Today reports.

Nugent defended himself to Glenn Beck: “I don’t threaten, I don’t waste breath threatening. I just conduct myself as a dedicated ‘We the people’ activist because I’ve saluted too many flag-draped coffins to not appreciate where the freedom comes from. The Nugent family is a totally nonviolent, peace and love, rock and roll, working-hard, playing-hard American family.”

Democrats Surge in House Swing Districts

April 18, 2012 at 12:30 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

A new Democracy Corps survey in the 56 most-competitive Republican held congressional districts finds President Obama now edging Mitt Romney, 48% to 47%. In December, Obama trailed by seven points.

Key finding: “Democrats are winning the image battle, up and down the ticket. While half of the voters in these districts register cool feelings toward the Republican Party and Republican Congress, the Democratic Party has enjoyed an 8-point bump in favorability since September 2011, and Democrats in Congress have seen a 7-point rise.”

Also interesting: “The Ryan budget is in trouble. Just 41% support it in these Republican districts with no description other than the fact that it cuts spending. When described, including using Ryan’s own language, support collapses to 34%.”
