Yet Another Election Screw Up in Florida

November 17, 2012 at 10:13 am EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

The Palm Beach Post reports a canvassing board decided to
recount all 37,379 ballots from early voting in the tight congressional
race between Rep. Allen West (R-FL) and Patrick
Murphy (D) after elections officials revealed that 306 ballots had gone uncounted.

Rick Hasen: “Just imagine if the presidential race hinged on Florida.  How many
more stories of missing and miscounted ballots would have emerged
(beyond the ones we’ve already heard about) if the fate of the
presidency hinged on the outcome.”

District Attorney Finally Admits His Adult Film Past

November 17, 2012 at 10:05 am EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Five days before his re-election bid for district attorney in upstate New York, Mark Suben was adamant he had never appeared in pornographic movies. He told the Syracuse Post-Standard the allegation was part of a smear campaign by his opponent.

Said Suben: “My response to that is, it is simply not true. I did no such thing… This would cost me the election and ruin my career.”

On Friday, Suben admitted he lied, holding off a story long enough to win re-election.

What forced his hand was a Youtube video that identified him as an actor who
went by the name of Gus Thomas and performed in 12 porn movies in the
1970s.

(R-VA), quoted by Politico, offering a blunt assessment of the Republican Party.

Gingrich Lacerates Romney Over Why He Lost

November 16, 2012 at 7:33 pm EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Newt Gingrich told Evan Smith that Mitt Romney’s explanation of why he lost the election — by giving “gifts” to minorities and young people — was “insulting and profoundly wrong.”

Said Gingrich: “He had enough billionaire supporters that if buying the electorate was the key, he could have got all of his super PAC friends together and said, ‘Don’t buy ads, give gifts.'”

Priebus Says He’s Locked Down Support for Second Term

November 16, 2012 at 4:58 pm EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

RNC Chairman Reince Priebus told party officials that he will run for a second two-year term in January and already has locked down support from most of the committee, Politico reports.

Moving to preempt any potential challenge, Priebus said he has the support of at least 130 of 168 state chairs and committee members.

McCain Loses His Cool

The Week has a hilarious video history of Sen. John McCain’s (R-AZ) temper tantrums.

The 51st State?

November 16, 2012 at 4:00 pm EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Even though Puerto Rico voted for the first time in favor of statehood, The Economist notes “the Republican-controlled House of Representatives has little incentive to address the topic. According to exit polls, 83% of boricuas on the mainland voted for Barack Obama. Statehood would add two Senate seats and a House delegation of five, the same size as Oregon’s and probably as reliably Democratic.”

“Unless the island holds another vote that yields a different result, however, Puerto Rico has now officially requested statehood. If Democrats retake the House in 2014, they would be well-advised to try to add a 51st star to the flag.”

Obama’s Favorability Jumps After Election Win

November 16, 2012 at 2:54 pm EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

A new Gallup poll finds President Obama’s favorable rating at 58%, his best in over three years.

He was more popular after his first election than he is now, with a 68% favorable rating just after the November 2008 election. His all-time high of 78% was measured shortly before his inauguration as president in January 2009.

Meanwhile, The Week notes losing “is never a great way to increase your popularity. But to an unusually vocal degree, Republicans are going out of their way to show Romney the door.”

Extra Bonus Quote of the Day

“I know we ran the most sophisticated and aggressive digital campaign in the history of Republican politics.”

— Romney campaign digital director Zac Moffatt, quoted by National Journal.

Clean Sweep for Democrats

November 16, 2012 at 2:24 pm EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

The Economist: “The Democrats won 50.6% of the votes for president, to 47.8% for the Republicans; 53.6% of the votes for the Senate, to 42.9% for the Republicans; and…49% of the votes for the House, to 48.2% for the Republicans (some ballots are still being counted). That’s not a vote for divided government. It’s a clean sweep.”

Fiscal Cliff Talks Get Fast Track

November 16, 2012 at 2:15 pm EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Congressional leaders said they have agreed to a fast-paced negotiation process to broker a deal to avert the “fiscal cliff,” the Wall Street Journal reports.

“In an unusual display of bipartisanship, the four congressional leaders addressed reporters jointly after meeting with President Barack Obama. Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-NV) said White House and congressional staff would work together next week to begin sorting through details, and suggested they could all reconvene in two weeks.”

Bloomberg: How Obama is taking control of the fiscal cliff debate.

Bonus Quote of the Day

Graham Says Romney Lost Because Christians Didn’t Vote

November 16, 2012 at 12:00 pm EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

The Rev. Franklin Graham claimed in an interview with David Brody that the “majority of Christians” did not vote.

Said Graham: “We know that from of the statistics that I’ve heard that the majority of Christians in this country just did not vote for whatever reason. The vast majority of evangelicals did not go to the polls. God is in control, and if Christians are upset, they need to be upset at themselves. We need to do a better job of getting our people- the church to vote. Now, I’m not trying to tell you how to vote, you can vote, but vote, my goodness, and vote for candidates that stand for Biblical values.”

First Read: “But Graham’s assertion — and implication that had white Christian evangelicals just showed up in bigger numbers, President Obama would have lost — is off base. In fact, white evangelicals/born-again Christians made up the same percentage of the electorate as they did in 2008 – 26%. They voted for Mitt Romney, a devout Mormon, by a wider margin than they did for Sen. John McCain four years ago.”

Three House Races Still Undecided

November 16, 2012 at 11:32 am EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Two close congressional races in California were finally decided, with Rep. Dan Lungren (R-CA) and Rep. Brian Bilbray (R-CA) losing their seats.

NBC News notes there are still three undecided House races: “The Undecided Three now include LA-3 (which is scheduled for a runoff in three weeks) and NC-7 and AZ-2 (where Democratic incumbents cling to narrow leads).”

Booker Delays Decision on Bid for Governor

November 16, 2012 at 11:24 am EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Newark Mayor Cory Booker said his decision on whether to run for New Jersey governor has been pushed back by Hurricane Sandy but vowed not to keep Democrats waiting too much longer, the Newark Star Ledger reports.

Said Booker: “The reality is Sandy has pushed my timeline back.”

The mayor originally said he would make his decision by early December.

Senate Democrats Eye Solution to Filibuster

November 16, 2012 at 11:21 am EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

The Huffington Post has the outlines of a Democratic proposal to weaken the filibuster in the U.S. Senate.

“The critical component, though, is a mechanism that would force senators to physically take the floor and speak in order to maintain opposition to legislation. The effort to end a filibuster is called a cloture motion. Under the proposed rules, if a cloture vote failed to win a simple majority, the bill would be killed and the Senate would move to new business. But if it won a majority — though less than a supermajority of 60 — the bill would remain on the floor for any senator who wished to opine on it. If at some point no senator rose to speak, after given several chances to do so, a new vote would be called — and only a simple majority would be needed to pass it.”

Meghan McCain Threatens to Leave Republican Party

November 16, 2012 at 11:06 am EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Meghan McCain: “Times are changing. The face of America is changing and we as Republicans stand at a crossroads. Are we going to accept the changing face of America and change with it? Or are we going to continue to become more isolated and irrelevant? It’s possible to maintain the core values of this party and evolve when it comes to social issues. Quite frankly, I don’t see any other path to success.”

“I’ve spent most of my adult life fighting for change from inside the Republican Party… And if we don’t move forward, adapt, and become relevant again, the Republican Party isn’t going to survive. It will just continue to alienate more moderate voters like myself. If I don’t see some changes in the next four years, I’m going to consider registering as an Independent in 2016.”

How TV Killed the GOP’s Family Values

November 16, 2012 at 9:49 am EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Daily Beast: “Republicans are searching for an explanation as to why voters rejected their vision of America. The answer may be on their television screens, where an ever-expanding, bluer definition of family values makes their nostalgic idea of family values feel like a foreign world.”
