A new Democratic internal poll shows Terry McAuliffe (D) leading Ken Cuccinelli (R) by 4 points in the Virginia governor’s race, 48% to 44%.

Congress Headed for Budget Showdown

August 23, 2013 at 7:12 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Budget talks between the White House and Senate Republicans have gone nowhere since Congress began its summer recess, increasing chances of a fiscal stalemate that could lead to a government shutdown in October or the threat of a government default later in the fall,” the New York Times reports.

“Negotiators who had hoped for a summer breakthrough say the chances for a major deficit reduction deal are rapidly slipping away. While many members of both parties say they would like to avoid either a shuttering of the government as of Oct. 1 or a default caused by failing to increase the federal debt limit, no acceptable solution has emerged. Lawmakers say the consequences could be severe.”

Meanwhile, Roll Call reports Speaker John Boehner “outlined a strategy for next month’s spending fight focused on the sequester spending cuts — and not on defunding Obamacare.”

The Week: Tea partiers get a dose of bad news from a Republican pollster.

August 23, 2013 at 7:03 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

You can’t stop data brokers — but you can make them delete your information.

Incogni does the work for you — contacting brokers and demanding removal of your personal data, including from hard-to-clean People Search sites.

Said city council candidate Mark Levine: “This is the man that Eliot Spitzer chose to stand by yesterday at
the presser.”

He was standing next to the

Coburn Says Obama is Getting Close to Impeachment

August 22, 2013 at 3:23 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Sen. Tom Coburn (R-OK) called President Obama “a personal friend of mine,” but said his administration was lawless and incompetent and “getting perilously close” to the Constitutional standard for impeachment, Tulsa World reports.

Said Coburn: “What you have to do is you have to establish the criteria that would qualify for proceedings against the president and that’s called impeachment. That’s not something you take lightly and you have to use a historical precedent of what that means. I think there’s some intended violation of the law in this administration, but I also think there’s a ton of incompetence of people who are making decisions.”

Powell Blasts North Carolina Voting Law

August 22, 2013 at 12:16 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

With North Carolina Gov. Pat McCrory (R) in the audience, former Secretary of State Colin Powell took aim at the state’s new voting law, “saying it hurts the Republican Party, punishes minority voters and makes it more difficult for everyone to vote,” the Raleigh News & Observer reports.

Said Powell: “I want to see policies that encourage every American to vote, not make it more difficult to vote.”

He added: “It immediately turns off a voting block the Republican Party needs. These kinds of actions do not build on the base. It just turns people away.”

The Anti-Obamacare Caucus

August 22, 2013 at 10:54 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Rep. Louie Gohmert (R-TX) told a town hall meeting that a core group of GOP lawmakers has been meeting weekly on derailing Obamacare, the Marshall News Messenger reports.

Said Gohmert: “Since May, there’s been a group of senators and about 10 or 12 House members, we’ve been meeting once a week trying to figure out what’s the strategy and Mike Lee took the lead on the strategy, and the strategy is to fund every part of government including some things some of us don’t care to fund and completely defund Obamacare.”

Molly Ball: “The activists pushing the latest Tea Party cause can’t explain how their
effort to stop health-care reform could ever possibly succeed.”

End of the Arab Spring?

August 22, 2013 at 9:34 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

First Read: “The likely chemical attack in Syria, seen as the worst in the world in possibly two decades, and the coming release of Egypt’s Hosni Mubarak from house arrest this morning, begs the question of whether the Arab Spring is over – and whether the autocrats and dictators have won.”

“Complicating matters is that there are no good options in either country, and there is no consensus on what Obama should do… The Middle East continues to be bad choices between standing up for ideals versus a form of stability that might not always live up to democratic ideals. And the U.S.’s No. 1 ally in the Middle East is Israel, and, for now, they are in the stability first camp. They are quietly relieved the military is in charge of Egypt and when it comes to Assad, there are plenty inside that country that are of the mindset, better to have the devil you know than the devil you don’t.”

Should Democrats Hope for a Government Shutdown?

August 22, 2013 at 9:26 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Politico:
“They’d never say it publicly. But catch many Democrats in an honest
moment and they would admit that a Republican-led government shut down
this fall might be the best thing — perhaps the only thing — that could
revive their fading hopes of capturing the House next year…Nothing
short of a powerful jolt — a moment that grabs casual voters by the
lapels and makes them take notice — is likely to alter the landscape in a
dramatic way. A shutdown could be it, Democrats argue, putting in play
GOP-leaning districts now thought to be all but out of reach.”
