Is DeMint Targeting Graham?

August 21, 2013 at 12:39 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Former Sen. Jim DeMint (R-SC), who resigned earlier this year to lead a conservative Washington-based think tank, occasionally voted against Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-SC) “while in the Senate. But they rarely criticized each other in public,” the Columbia State reports.

But the political action committee that DeMint founded in 2008 released a radio ad in South Carolina criticizing Graham for recently saying that voting to defund the Affordable Care Act was “a bridge too far.”

NPR notes DeMint is on record saying that Republican unwilling to vote to defund Obamacare “need to be replaced.”

Why Killing Immigration Reform Won’t Hurt House GOP

August 21, 2013 at 12:36 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Greg Sargent:
“How many GOP-held House districts vulnerable to changing sides have
large enough Latino populations to ensure that high Latino turnout in
2014 could swing the outcome? As it turns out, not too many. A grand
total of eight, and that’s if you include multiple races that Democrats
are all but certainly not going to win. Given that Dems need to flip 17
seats to take back the House — and will be defending a host of Dem-held
seats against GOP challenges at the same time — this is less than
encouraging.”

Young Republicans Warming to Obamacare?

August 21, 2013 at 11:55 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Wonk Wire: New survey finds more young Republicans are using a key Obamacare provision than Democrats.

Trump Slams Romney Team

August 21, 2013 at 10:00 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Donald Trump warned Gov. Chris Christie (R) against working with Stuart Stevens, the top strategist for Mitt Romney’s 2012 presidential campaign, The Hill reports.

Said Trump: “I think he did a terrible job for Mitt Romney, absolutely terrible. That was a campaign that should have been won. I don’t know Stuart Stevens from a hole in the wall. I don’t know what he looks like. But I will say this, whoever ran that campaign, that is not the person I would want running my campaign if I were running.”

Dean Visits Iowa and New Hampshire

August 21, 2013 at 9:57 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Howard Dean is visiting Iowa and New Hampshire this week, CNN reports.

Rick Klein: “There is no perceptible groundswell for Dean to
get the band back together, a decade after his campaign implosion. But
when Dean says — and yes, he’s said this — that he’d think about giving
it another go if other Democratic candidates aren’t speaking to the
progressive base, take him seriously. Whether Dean becomes the vehicle
or not, there’s room to President Obama’s — and Hillary Clinton’s — left
at the moment, on topics both foreign and domestic. Dean may not be the
vehicle to channel that energy, but his reception could in part dictate
what kind of vehicle will be in order.”

Sydney Leathers, the sexting partner of Anthony Weiner, has made a hardcore porn video, complete with an actor in a shirt and tie playing the New York City mayoral candidate, the New York Daily News reports.

Gawker has a not-safe-for-work preview.

New Details Show Broader NSA Surveillance Reach

August 21, 2013 at 9:00 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“The National Security Agency — which possesses only limited legal authority to spy on U.S. citizens — has built a surveillance network that covers more Americans’ Internet communications than officials have publicly disclosed,” the Wall Street Journal reports.

“The system has the capacity to reach roughly 75% of all U.S. Internet traffic in the hunt for foreign intelligence, including a wide array of communications by foreigners and Americans. In some cases, it retains the written content of emails sent between citizens within the U.S. and also filters domestic phone calls made with Internet technology.”

Wonk Wire: It’s time for a new secrecy regime.

Last Nixon Tapes to be Released

August 21, 2013 at 8:18 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“The final installment of secretly recorded phone calls and meetings from President Richard Nixon’s White House will be released Wednesday, marking a final chapter in a campaign for public access that continues as memories of Watergate fade,” the AP reports.

“The final installment covers the tumultuous three months when Watergate was closing in on the 37th president. Still, he forged ahead with Soviet peace talks, worked to cement Chinese relations and welcomed home Vietnam prisoners of war.”

They’ll be posted here later this morning.

Cruz Declines to Speculate on Whether He’s Eligible to Run

August 21, 2013 at 8:06 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX) refused to say whether he believes he is eligible to run for president of the United States even though he was born in Canada, NBC News reports.

Said Cruz: “I’m not going to speculate about legal consequences – I’m going to leave that to others.”

GOP Lawmaker Consulted Lawyers About Impeaching Obama

August 21, 2013 at 7:38 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Rep. Kerry Bentivolio (R-MI) said he’s consulted with lawyers about impeaching President Obama, The Hill reports.

Said Bentivolio in a video found by BuzzFeed: “If I could write that bill and submit it, it would be a dream come true. I stood 12 feet away from the guy and listened to him. I couldn’t stand being there, but because he is president I have to respect the office. That’s my job, as a congressman, I respect the office.”

Bentivolio said that after the encounter with Obama he returned to his office and summoned lawyers to discuss the impeachment process.

Quote of the Day

August 21, 2013 at 6:57 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“The party is acting as if the entire world is a GOP primary. That is a very
dangerous way to operate. We have massive image problems with the
greater electorate, and the silly antics of the purist wing are making
our dire problems even worse.”

— GOP strategist Mike
Murphy, quoted by the Washington Post.

Could a Red Sox Fan Be Mayor of New York City?

August 21, 2013 at 6:34 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

New York Times: “Bill de Blasio, the city’s public advocate and a leading Democratic contender for mayor, has a confession: He is a Red Sox fan, tried and true. He was raised in Cambridge, Mass., becoming a devotee of the Red Sox at 6, and he is unabashed in his disdain for anything having to do with that team from the Bronx.”

Said de Blasio: “I have my loyalty to the team of my youth” calling his tie to the Red Sox a “deep devotion.”

McAuliffe Leads for Virginia Governor

August 21, 2013 at 6:32 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

A new Quinnipiac poll in Virginia finds Terry McAuliffe (D) holds a six point lead over Ken Cuccinelli (R) among likely voters in the race for governor, 48% to 42%.

Said pollster Peter Brown: “The campaign has been light on issues and big on personalities, and it is in the area of personal characteristics that McAuliffe has a small edge. It seems obvious that Gov. Bob McDonnell’s political troubles are hurting fellow Republican Cuccinelli. Guilt by association may not be fair, but it sure is politically powerful. Trust matters and at this point neither man is doing all that well in that category.”

Governor’s Mansion for Sale

August 21, 2013 at 6:19 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

The mansion that once housed South Dakota governors will be auctioned off this week, the Sioux Falls Argus Leader reports.

“The mansion was the official state residence from 1936 until 2003 when a new residence was built.”

Minnesota Ticket May Break Up

August 21, 2013 at 6:08 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Minnesota’s governor and lieutenant governor have a silent — and possibly temporary — partnership,” the Minneapolis Star Tribune reports.

Lt. Gov. Yvonne Prettner Solon (D) stated flatly that she and Gov. Mark Dayton (D), “don’t talk very often.” Asked about his second-in-command, Dayton responded with a cool, “I’m not going to comment on our relationship.”

Battle for Fed Chair Rages Behind the Scenes

August 21, 2013 at 6:03 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Rarely has the appointment of a new Fed chairman been accompanied by so much commotion, penetrating even the political dead zone of mid-August,” the Washington Post reports.

“The fight pits allies of Larry Summers, who also was Obama’s top economic adviser during the darkest days of the recession, against those of rival candidate Janet Yellen, the Fed vice chairman who has been an architect of the bank’s effort to reduce unemployment rates.”

“The opposing camps have waged high-profile media campaigns, featuring dueling op-eds in the nation’s top newspapers, interviews defending their candidates and comments on social media. But the battle also has played out behind the scenes.”

Wonk Wire: Can anyone forge a consensus like Bernanke?

No GOP Move to the Center

August 21, 2013 at 6:01 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Michael Tomasky: “If you’d asked me six months ago whether the Republican Party would manage to find a few ways to sidle back toward the center between now and 2016, I’d have said yes. But today, on the basis of evidence offered so far this year, I’d have to say a big fat no. With every passing month, the party contrives new ways to go crazier. There’s a lot of time between now and 2016, but it’s hard to watch recent events without concluding that the extreme part of the base is gaining more and more internal control.”
