Bob Dole encouraged fellow Republicans to back Donald Trump and suggested the presumptive GOP nominee select Newt Gingrich as his running mate, CNN reports.
Said Dole: “I have been a Republican all my life. The party has done a lot for me. I hope I’ve done a lot for the party along the way. But when Donald Trump clinched the Republican nomination, it was an easy call for me. What’s a lifelong Republican supposed to do, support the opponent? I don’t think so.”
“I’m not seeing a lot of movement there. He’s got Lindsey down there helping him, and his brother came in to help him, and he’s still at about what, 10 percent? Which is way behind top three.”
— Former Sen. Bob Dole (R-KS), quoted by National Review, expressing disappointment in Jeb Bush’s presidential campaign.

Former Sen. Bob Dole said that the Republican party would suffer “cataclysmic” and “wholesale losses” if Ted Cruz was the nominee and that Donald Trump would fare better, the New York Times reports.
Said Dole: “I question his allegiance to the party. I don’t know how often you’ve heard him say the word ‘Republican’ — not very often.”
Dole added that while Cruz calls himself “conservative,” he preferred a different word for Cruz: “extremist.”
“I might oversleep that day.”
— Former Sen. Bob Dole (R-KS), quoted by Politico, when asked if he would vote for Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX) if he were the GOP nominee.
