Baker Won’t Send National Guard to Border

June 18, 2018 at 3:26 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Massachusetts Gov. Charlie Baker (R) said he will not send the Massachusetts National Guard to the U.S.-Mexico border due to the “cruel and inhumane” decision by the Trump administration to separate children from their parents as families arrive at the border, NBC Boston reports.

Said Baker: “We told the National Guard to hold steady and to not go down to the border —period. We won’t be supporting that initiative unless they change the policy.”

Ditching Trump Made Baker the Most Popular Governor

January 13, 2018 at 8:53 am EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Politico: “Donald Trump got crushed by Hillary Clinton in Massachusetts. And after his first year in office, polls show the president is now even less popular here.”

“Trump’s rock-bottom ratings should be dragging Republican Gov. Charlie Baker to defeat in 2018. Instead, the opposite is occurring. Baker is not only more popular than any other politician in solidly Democratic Massachusetts, he’s the most popular governor in the nation.”

“His defiance of the laws of political gravity is proving maddening to opponents who once viewed him as a certain one-termer. And it offers a ray of hope to the handful of other Republican governors facing blue-state electorates in November with the prospect of an unpopular president in the background.”

Baker Won’t Get Involved in National GOP Politics

November 7, 2014 at 11:16 am EST By Taegan Goddard 13 Comments

Massachusetts Gov.-elect Charlie Baker (R) told the Boston Globe that he “plans to eschew the national Republican Party, distancing himself from the GOP just days after it swept the political landscape and declining to show support for any of his party’s prospective standard-bearers in two years.”

Said Baker: “I have no thoughts about that. I don’t view myself as a national anything. I would hope that one of the lessons that some of the Republicans nationally would take from this race is that it’s a good idea to chase 100 percent of the vote and to make the case in as many forums and as many places as they possibly can.”
