GOP Lawmaker Explains Trump Hush Money Payments

Sen. Mike Rounds (R-SD) told CNN that President Trump made hush money payoffs to adult film star Stormy Daniels because ”this president loves his family.”

He added: “I think it has as much to do with trying not to have public discussions about something that is, for him, a private matter that he didn’t want to have discussed with his family.”

Rounds Says Pruitt Criticism Is Just ‘Nitpicking’

Sen. Mike Rounds (R-SD) defended embattled Environmental Protection Agency chief Scott Pruitt, saying much of the scrutiny seems to be “nitpicking,” NBC News reports.

Said Rounds: “I don’t know how much of it is overblown and how much of it is accurate, to be honest. I’m not going to call it fake news. I’ll say in some cases we’ll overblow something, but in this particular case Mr. Pruitt has been doing a good job as the secretary of the EPA. He is moving forward exactly as this president said he would.”

Rounds Won’t Back Repeal of Estate Tax

Sen. Mike Rounds (R-SD) said “he opposes repealing the estate tax, a long-sought goal of his party,” Bloomberg reports.

“The South Dakota senator’s position could imperil prospects of ending the tax given the GOP’s narrow, 52-vote majority in the Senate.”

Said Rounds: “I think we do the most good by preserving the estate tax in some form… The larger ones and the most wealthy — they’ve already figured out a way to bypass the taxes anyway.”
