Romney Will Meet with Former Advisers

January 7, 2015 at 5:18 pm EST By Taegan Goddard 52 Comments

Mitt Romney, who has been encouraged by his allies to consider another run for the White House, will meet with several of his former political advisers for a private dinner in California, the Washington Post reports.

“Romney’s visit to the San Francisco area comes as former Florida governor Jeb Bush moves closer to formally launching a campaign for the 2016 Republican presidential nomination, while chatter about a possible third presidential run by Romney has quieted. But some Romney associates, including prominent donors and consultants, have privately insisted that he remains interested in a possible return to the national stage, and that he is waiting to see how the GOP field unfolds before he makes a final decision on his future.”

Romney Didn’t Lose Because He Shifted Too Far Right

January 3, 2015 at 8:58 am EST By Taegan Goddard 5 Comments

Lynn Vavreck: “These three pieces of evidence — that Mr. Romney was thought to be no less conservative before the primaries than during or after them, that his average rating didn’t shift much at all during the entire year, and that he was ideologically closer to most voters than Mr. Obama — bust the myth that Republicans lost the 2012 election because of ideological shifts in the primaries.”

“Mr. Romney did not lose the 2012 election because he was too conservative for general-election voters — or even for those who call themselves independents. The data could not be clearer on this point.”

Bush Jumps to Top of GOP Field

December 29, 2014 at 8:38 am EST By Taegan Goddard 43 Comments

A new CNN/ORC poll finds Jeb Bush with the support of 23% of Republicans, 10 points higher than his nearest rival, New Jersey Gov. Chris Cristie.

Byron York: “But amid all those names — 14 in all — CNN left one off: Mitt Romney. The 2012 Republican nominee has been leading the GOP field in surveys that include his name — indeed, he led CNN’s November poll, with 20 percent to Bush’s 9 percent. Did Romney’s support disappear in the space of a month, even as Bush announced he is ‘actively exploring’ a presidential run?”

New PAC Worries Romney Supporters

December 23, 2014 at 5:12 pm EST By Taegan Goddard 8 Comments

“The new group has drawn consternation from longtime Romney advisers, who worry it could be a scam, designed to rip off vulnerable supporters of the 2012 Republican presidential nominee… Launched late last week, Ready for Romney appears to be, at best, political amateur hour,” the Daily Beast reports.

Said Romney fundraiser Spencer Zwick: “It would seem to me we would know something or at least one of the names connected to a legitimate organization. In this case, I don’t know any of the individuals. Nor do they appear to have been big Romney supporters. I likewise don’t know any Romney donors or former campaign leadership at all connected to this group.”

Bush Donor Network Puts Rivals in a Bind

December 22, 2014 at 8:06 am EST By Taegan Goddard 5 Comments

“Jeb Bush’s announcement that he will explore a White House bid threatens years of painstaking spadework by other Republicans who have cultivated many of the wealthy donors loyal to the former Florida governor’s family,” the Wall Street Journal reports.

“Mr. Bush is heir to a vaunted network of Republican contributors built over his family’s two presidencies, his own governorship and other campaigns. It is one of the most formidable assets in GOP politics and could hamper the fund-raising of Republican potential rivals, including Florida Sen. Marco Rubio and New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie. The donors’ ties to the Bushes also could undercut possible interest in a third White House campaign by Mitt Romney.”

Do the Polls Vindicate Romney?

December 19, 2014 at 9:01 am EST By Taegan Goddard 64 Comments

Byron York: “People in Romney’s circle realize that some of his standing in the polls reflects nothing more than name recognition; everybody knows the guy who ran for president in 2012. But they believe there’s more to it than that. In discussions this week, they pointed to what they think is a widespread belief among voters, certainly among Republicans, that Romney was right about some key issues in the 2012 campaign.”

Bush, Romney Lead GOP Presidential Field

December 16, 2014 at 10:27 am EST By Taegan Goddard 11 Comments

“Jeb Bush, who’s seriously considering a 2016 presidential bid, has sprinted to the front of the Republican field in a new McClatchy-Marist Poll. Former GOP nominee Mitt Romney remains on top, with Bush, a former Florida governor, a close second. Take away Romney, and Bush leads the field.”

Does Bush Freeze Out Romney and Rubio?

December 15, 2014 at 9:50 am EST By Taegan Goddard 27 Comments

First Read: “After Jeb Bush’s news this weekend, we received a press release that supporters of Mitt Romney have created a Super PAC urging the 2012 GOP presidential nominee to make a run in ’16. This Super PAC sure feels like a response to Jeb, because if Jeb does get in, there won’t be as much pining for Romney, especially among the Republican Party’s wealthy donors. Here’s one more thing to consider: If Jeb is ultimately a “yes,” that probably also freezes out a bid by Marco Rubio, who’s a political disciple of Bush’s.”

Is Mitt Romney Reconsidering?

December 11, 2014 at 10:33 pm EST By Taegan Goddard 17 Comments

“While some people close to Romney insist he hasn’t moved from saying he has no plans to run, the 2012 Republican nominee has sounded at least open to the idea in recent conversations, according to more than a dozen people who’ve spoken with him in the last month,” Politico reports.

“In his private musings, Romney has sounded less than upbeat about most of the potential candidates in the 2016 Republican field.”

Jeb Bush Has a Mitt Romney Problem

December 11, 2014 at 7:02 am EST By Taegan Goddard 29 Comments

Businessweek reports that Jeb Bush’s recent business ventures “reveal that he shares a number of liabilities with the last nominee, Mitt Romney, whose career in private equity proved so politically damaging that it sunk his candidacy.”

“Documents filed with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission on Nov. 27 list Bush as chairman and manager of a new offshore private equity fund, BH Global Aviation, which raised $61 million in September, largely from foreign investors. In November the fund incorporated in the United Kingdom and Wales—a structure, several independent finance lawyers say, that operates like a tax haven by allowing overseas investors to avoid U.S. taxes and regulations.”

Romney Tweets Needed to be Approved by 22 People

December 5, 2014 at 11:49 am EST By Taegan Goddard 24 Comments

A new study on the use of Twitter during the 2012 presidential campaign reports that Mitt Romney’s digital team “had to go through an extensive vetting process for all of its public communications, meaning that the temporal workflow of the campaign did not match the speed of social media.”

Said digital staffer Caitlin Checkett: “So whether it was a tweet, Facebook post, blog post, photo — anything you could imagine — it had to be sent around to everyone for approval. Towards the end of the campaign that was 22 individuals who had to approve it… The digital team unfortunately did not have the opportunity to think of things on their own and post them… The downfall of that of course is as fast as we are moving it can take a little bit of time to get that approval to happen.”

Romney with a Beard?

November 19, 2014 at 7:43 am EST By Taegan Goddard 11 Comments

In a talk at Brigham Young University, Mitt Romney spoke about some of the lessons he learned from running for president.

Said Romney: “One of the best and the worst things about a campaign is that you get a lot of advice. Usually several times a day, someone in an audience would hand me a letter with their 100% sure-fire way for me to win the election. I was told to take bigger steps when I walk to show that I’m young and athletic. Another said I should stop shaving for a few days to look more sexy.”
