Huntsman Mulls Senate Bid In Utah

November 29, 2016 at 11:28 am EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Former Utah Gov. Jon Huntsman (R) told Bloomberg that he’s weighing a run for the U.S. Senate in 2018, depending in part on whether fellow Republican Orrin Hatch decides to seek an eighth term.

Said Huntsman: “I’ve always said that I’ve got one more run left in our bones. And I don’t know what that will be. But I love this country.”

Hatch Defends the Filibuster

November 17, 2016 at 7:17 am EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Sen. Orrin Hatch (R-UT) told the Huffington Post that he doesn’t support ending the filibuster.

Said Hatch: “Are you kidding? I’m one of the biggest advocates for the filibuster. It’s the only way to protect the minority, and we’ve been in the minority a lot more than we’ve been in the majority. It’s just a great, great protection for the minority.”

Hatch Reacts to Meeting Before It Occurs

May 26, 2016 at 12:34 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard 33 Comments

Sen. Orrin Hatch (R-UT) accidentally published an op-ed in the Deseret News claiming that his meeting with Judge Merrick Garland didn’t change his mind about delaying action on the nomination until after the presidential election, the Washington Post reports.

The problem: Hatch hasn’t even met with Garland yet.

The article was removed from the Deseret News website but remains available in a Google database.

Obama Calls Hatch’s Bluff

March 16, 2016 at 10:16 am EDT By Taegan Goddard 145 Comments

Sen. Orrin Hatch (R-UT) told Newsmax last week that President Obama “could easily name Merrick Garland, who is a fine man” to the Supreme Court.

But he quickly added, “He probably won’t do that because this appointment is about the election. So I’m pretty sure he’ll name someone the liberal Democratic base wants.”

Hatch was wrong.

Quote of the Day

“I don’t think that senators have much chance of running for president. The reason is, if they’re doing their job, they can’t run. If they don’t do their job, then that’ll be used against them. ”

— Sen. Orrin Hatch (R-UT), quoted by the New York Times.

Hatch Sees Warren as the New Kennedy

January 22, 2015 at 8:17 am EST By Taegan Goddard 18 Comments

Sen. Orrin Hatch (R-UT) told Yahoo News that he thinks Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-MA), “who showed up at a well-attended reception to celebrate Hatch’s chairmanship of the Senate Finance Committee and said a few words in his honor, would like to form a friendship with him ‘like Kennedy had.'”

Said Hatch: “We’ve become friends. I think she would like to have a relationship with me like Kennedy had. I like her. I think she’s a very bright woman. She’s certainly playing the media in a beautiful way.”

Hatch added that he’d like to see Warren become “the new Kennedy.”

— Sen. Orrin Hatch (R-UT), quoted by Huffington Post, vowing to keep filibuster rules put in place by Democrats.

Orrin Hatch, Then and Now

November 8, 2014 at 8:59 am EST By Taegan Goddard 8 Comments

“We should get it back to where it was. You can see the destruction that has happened around here.”

— Sen. Orrin Hatch (R-UT), quoted by Politico in September, on re-establishing the judicial-nomination filibuster in the U.S. Senate.

“Simply put, if Republicans re-establish the judicial-nomination filibuster, it would remain in place only until the moment that a new Democratic majority decided that discarding the rule again would be useful.”

— Hatch, writing in the Wall Street Journal this week, arguing against reverting to the old filibuster rules.

Hatch Says Reid was ‘Pathetic’ as Majority Leader

November 6, 2014 at 9:48 pm EST By Taegan Goddard 28 Comments

Sen. Orrin Hatch (R-UT) bashed Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-NV) in an interview with The Hill and called the last four years “the most pathetic, pitiful way I’ve seen the Senate run in all my 38 years — and I’ve seen some pretty pathetic, pitiful times.”

Said Hatch: “Reid is one of my friends, but he’s been a pathetic majority leader as far as I’m concerned. He thought he was doing right by protecting his side, but I think the American people resented him because he got nothing done.”
