Gates Pleads Guilty to Conspiracy and Lying

February 23, 2018 at 3:05 pm EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Rick Gates, a former top official in President Trump’s campaign, pleaded guilty Friday afternoon to conspiracy and lying to the FBI, striking a deal to cooperate and provide information to special counsel Robert Mueller’s ongoing investigation, the Washington Post reports.

“The plea caps a tumultuous 24 hours for Gates in which he was hit with fresh charges, changed lawyers and admitted crimes.”

Gates Confirms to Friends He’ll Plead Guilty

February 23, 2018 at 10:51 am EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

In the letter obtained by ABC News, former Trump adviser Rick Gates writes to family and friends “despite my initial desire to vigorously defend myself, I have had a change of heart. The reality of how long this legal process will likely take, the cost, and the circus-like atmosphere of an anticipated trial are too much. I will better serve my family moving forward by exiting this process.”

He added: “The consequence is the public humiliation, which at this moment seems like a small price to pay for what our children would have to endure otherwise.”

Gates Will Plead Guilty and Cooperate

February 23, 2018 at 9:38 am EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Former Trump deputy campaign chairman Rick Gates is expected to plead guilty as soon as Friday afternoon, “a move that signals he is cooperating with the investigation into Russia’s interference in the 2016 election,” the New York Times reports.

“The plea deal could be a significant development in the investigation — a sign that Mr. Gates plans to offer incriminating information against his longtime associate and the former campaign chairman, Paul Manafort, or other members of the Trump campaign in exchange for a lighter punishment.”

32 New Charges Filed Against Manafort and Gates

February 22, 2018 at 4:36 pm EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“New charges were filed Thursday against former Trump campaign chairman Paul Manafort and his business partner, ratcheting up the legal pressure on them as they prepare for a trial later this year,” the Washington Post reports.

“A new indictment has long been expected in special counsel Robert Mueller’s prosecution of Manafort and his right-hand man, Rick Gates, on fraud and money laundering charges. Manafort served as President Trump’s campaign chairman from June to August 2016. Gates also served as a top official on Trump’s campaign. The new indictment contains 32 counts, including tax charges.”

Meanwhile, the Daily Beast reports that Gates fired his lawyer and, contrary to recent media reports, he is not about to make a deal with Mueller.

New Charges Filed In Manafort-Gates Case

February 21, 2018 at 12:15 pm EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“New charges have been filed in special counsel Robert Mueller’s criminal case against former Trump campaign chairman Paul Manafort and aide Rick Gates, but the charges were put under seal by the court, obscuring the nature and import of the development,” Politico reports.

Gates Will Now Testify Against Manafort

February 18, 2018 at 4:33 pm EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Rick Gates “will plead guilty to fraud-related charges within days – and has made clear to prosecutors that he would testify against Paul Manafort,” the Los Angeles Times reports.

According to a person familiar with those talks, Gates, a longtime political consultant, can expect “a substantial reduction in his sentence” if he fully cooperates with the investigation. He said that Gates is apt to serve about 18 months in prison.

Gates’ Lawyers Withdraw from Case

February 1, 2018 at 5:32 pm EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

The lawyers for former Trump aide Rick Gates, who was indicted alongside Paul Manafort, have asked for permission to withdraw from the case “effective immediately,” USA Today reports.

The reasons aren’t stated in the public filing but are included in an exhibit “which is the subject of a motion to be filed under seal.”

[alert type=”general” dismiss=”no”]This suggests Gates may have flipped and is now cooperating with the special counsel. If true, that’s very bad news for Manafort.[/alert]

New Signs Gates May Be Negotiating with Mueller

January 23, 2018 at 10:02 pm EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Former Trump campaign aide Rick Gates “has quietly added a prominent white-collar attorney, Tom Green, to his defense team, signaling that Gates’ approach to his not-guilty plea could be changing behind the scenes,” CNN reports.

”Green, a well-known Washington defense lawyer, was seen at special counsel Robert Mueller’s office twice last week.”

Mueller Likely to Probe Gates’ Side Gig as Movie Producer

November 10, 2017 at 6:06 am EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

McClatchy: “Rick Gates, indicted last week with his former boss and mentor Paul Manafort in the special counsel investigation of Russia’s meddling in the 2016 presidential election, is best known as a political consultant and lobbyist. Less well known is his sideline as a Hollywood producer. Gates has been involved in a handful of films, including this year’s Walk of Fame, which starred Clint Eastwood’s son Scott.”

“Gates himself has not been sued or charged in connection with any movies. But given that his co-producers have been, and that film production is known for being forgiving when it comes to clouding the original source of funds invested, experts say it’s extremely unlikely that Mueller is not investigating this part of Gates’ finances.”

“Gates’s film connections also have a distinctly former Soviet flavor.”

Manafort, Gates Remain Under House Arrest for Now

November 6, 2017 at 12:20 pm EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

A federal judge “ordered former Trump campaign chairman Paul Manafort and his associate Rick Gates to remain under house arrest with their movements tracked by GPS devices – until they offer up more bail money to assure their future appearances in court,” USA Today reports.

The judge said she was “inclined” to eventually “let both Manafort and Gates out of home confinement, and was even open to allowing them to travel within the United States so they could continue their consulting work, but not overseas.”

Reaction from Inside the White House

October 30, 2017 at 5:11 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Jonathan Swan: “Nobody was surprised to learn that former Trump campaign chairman Paul Manafort is the first to be publicly indicted, along with his business partner Rick Gates, for alleged money laundering, failing to disclose foreign lobbying, and tax violations.”

“One of those sources told me ‘people are relieved it’s Manafort and not Flynn’ who was indicted.”

“I’ve had dozens of conversations about this subject with administration officials over the past months, and while nobody I’ve spoken to genuinely thinks collusion with Russia happened on the campaign, plenty worry about what Bob Mueller’s crack team of financial investigators will turn up on Trump and his allies.”

Manafort Associate Still Within Trump Inner Circle

March 23, 2017 at 6:00 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Washington Post: “But even as Trump officials downplay Manafort’s role, his decade-long business associate Rick Gates remains entrenched in the president’s operation. Gates is one of four people leading a Trump-blessed group that defends the president’s agenda. As recently as last week, he was at the White House to meet with officials as part of that work.”

“Through Manafort, Gates is tied to many of the same business titans from Ukraine and Russia, including Oleg Deripaska, a Russian oligarch with strong ties to Russian President Vladimir Putin.”
