Phil Murphy Won’t Rule Out Meddling in GOP Primaries

New Jersey Gov. Phil Murphy (D), the new chair of the Democratic Governors Association, told Politico that he wouldn’t rule out meddling in GOP primaries to try to get less electable Republicans nominated.

Said Murphy: “I say this literally, you should assume that if something is legal and ethical, nothing’s off the table.”

Murphy said his first priority is getting another term for Kentucky Gov. Andy Beshear (D), who is up for reelection in 2023.

Cassidy to Announce Soon on Louisiana Governor’s Race

Sen. Bill Cassidy (R-LA) told reporters that he has made a decision about running for Lousiana governor and will announce it publicly later this week, the New Orleans Times Picayune reports.

WRKF: “The statement comes one day after his Senate colleague John Kennedy (R-LA) said he is ‘seriously considering’ mounting his own gubernatorial bid and released his own polling data showing that he would be an early favorite in the race.”

“Former United Nations Ambassador Kelly Craft (R) launched her long-anticipated campaign for Kentucky governor on Wednesday, saying the state’s ‘best days are ahead of us’ as she joined a crowded lineup of Republicans competing to challenge Democratic Gov. Andy Beshear (D) next year,” the AP reports.

Daniel Cameron to Run for Kentucky Governor

Kentucky Attorney General Daniel Cameron (R) filed paperwork to launch a run for governor in 2023, ending weeks of speculation that he would join the field of prospective Republican candidates, the Louisville Courier-Journal reports.

Gov. Andy Beshear (D) has announced he is running for reelection, already raising more than $2 million for that run. Recent polls have shown his approval rating in Kentucky at nearly 60%.

“There’s no Senate Republican quite like Bill Cassidy: He voted to convict Donald Trump of inciting an insurrection after getting reelected by 40 points, while helping cut big deals on Covid relief and infrastructure,” Politico reports.

“Now he’s eyeing the governor’s office in Baton Rouge.”

“The Louisianan confirmed in an interview that he’s considering running for governor in his state, which has elected conservative Democrat John Bel Edwards to two consecutive terms — the first one over former Sen. David Vitter (R-La.). Cassidy said it’s not his idea, but that he’s ‘been approached to run for governor’ by people in the state.”

Goddard spent more than a decade as managing director and chief operating officer of a prominent investment firm in New York City. Previously, he was a policy adviser to a U.S. Senator and Governor.
