William Regnery Is Dead

July 19, 2021 at 12:08 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“William H. Regnery II, a reclusive heir to a Midwestern textile fortune who bankrolled some of the leading organizations and figures behind the rise of the alt-right and championed efforts to win adherents to a modernized notion of white supremacy, died on July 2,” the New York Times reports.

“Mr. Regnery rarely granted interviews or spoke in public, and he sought to work behind the scenes, through funding and organizing. He came to his far-right views late in life, at least publicly, saying he had grown disenchanted with the ‘ebullient optimism’ of the Republican Party in the early 1990s.”

Adviser to Pro-Trump Group Also Runs Racist Newsletter

July 12, 2021 at 12:23 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

The Informant: “An advisor for the influential conservative youth organization Turning Point USA recently published an essay for subscribers of his personal newsletter that, among other things, said Black people have ‘become socially incompatible with other races’ and ‘American Black culture has evolved into an un-fixable and crime-ridden mess.'”

“It also said white people aren’t racist but ‘just exhausted’ with Black people. It portrayed post-Civil War America as a 150-year-long ‘experiment’ to see whether Black people could be ‘taken from the jungles of Africa,’ enslaved, and then integrated into a majority-white society. It said that experiment had failed.”

“The voting rights group Stacey Abrams founded after losing the 2018 election to Gov. Brian Kemp, Fair Fight, reported Thursday that it has raised another $6 million in the past five months,” the Atlanta Journal Constitution reports.

The Lincoln Project responds to the news: “We’re just getting warmed up.“

Ex-Trump Aides Seek to Take Out ‘Fake’ Republicans

May 30, 2021 at 8:39 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

A handful of Donald Trump campaign alumni have formed a new group to try to unseat the 10 Republican House members who crossed party lines to vote to impeach the former president earlier this year, Axios reports.

America Strong PAC officially formed early this month. The super PAC’s website pledges to “remove the ten pretenders,” and features a 30-second ad-style video going after Rep. Liz Cheney.

Mark Halperin’s Hiring Draws Protests

April 22, 2021 at 8:39 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“A nonpartisan political organization is facing blowback from its employees after hiring journalist Mark Halperin, whose career as a prominent TV pundit hit a wall after he faced multiple allegations of sexual harassment,” the Washington Post reports.

“Junior staffers at No Labels objected this week when the organization hired Halperin, co-author of the best-selling campaign chronicle Game Change. The internal dissension grew so heated that two employees who complained were granted paid leave — to consider whether they want to stay, the organization said — and a third is considering resigning over it.”

The only justification given for Halperin’s hiring is that he’s “relatively low cost.”

The GOP Is Creating Harsher Penalties for Protesters

April 21, 2021 at 5:54 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

New York Times: “The measures are part of a wave of new anti-protest legislation, sponsored and supported by Republicans, in the 11 months since Black Lives Matter protests swept the country following the death of George Floyd. The Minneapolis police officer who killed Mr. Floyd, Derek Chauvin, was convicted on Tuesday on murder and manslaughter charges, a cathartic end to weeks of tension.”

“But while Democrats seized on Mr. Floyd’s death last May to highlight racism in policing and other forms of social injustice, Republicans responded to a summer of protests by proposing a raft of punitive new measures governing the right to lawfully assemble. G.O.P. lawmakers in 34 states have introduced 81 anti-protest bills during the 2021 legislative session — more than twice as many proposals as in any other year.”

Why Corporate America Is Acting ‘Vaguely Liberal’

April 20, 2021 at 12:00 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Kevin Drum: “The bottom line, so to speak, is that in the past the business community stayed in its lane and didn’t worry much about the social conservative wing of the Republican Party. But now they feel like it’s out of control and bad for business.”

“Like it or not, big corporations have mostly adopted the vaguely liberal ‘responsible citizen’ attitude of the majority of Americans, namely that climate change is bad; diversity is good; mass killings are bad; immigration is good; trade wars are bad; trans people are good; and so forth. This is the corporate persona that they actively promote in their advertising, and they do it because their market research says this is what most people want.”

Chamber of Commerce Losing Allies

April 12, 2021 at 1:00 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Josh Kraushaar: “For a lesson in the perils of trying to play both sides of the aisle in a polarized Washington, look no further than the U.S. Chamber of Commerce’s unenviable position in the early months of the Biden administration.”

“The Chamber now finds itself in political purgatory—alienated from many Republican lawmakers it once considered close allies, while not winning much of a hearing from the new Democratic administration and Congress on its pet priorities.”

“More than 100 chief executives and corporate leaders gathered online Saturday to discuss taking new action to combat the controversial state voting bills being considered across the country, including the one recently signed into law in Georgia,” the Washington Post reports.

“Executives from major airlines, retailers and manufacturers – plus at least one NFL owner – talked about potential ways to show they opposed the controversial legislation, including by halting donations to politicians who support the bills and even delaying investments in states that pass the restrictive measures.”

Wall Street Journal: CEOs plan new push on voting legislation.

Why Conservative Boycotts Rarely Work

April 6, 2021 at 10:41 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Philip Bump: “It’s the spasmodic nature of the Trump/Republican boycotts that makes them generally impotent. As any organizer can tell you, boycotts don’t work simply by calling for them to happen. They work only when there’s repeated pressure for the boycotts to be upheld, a slow, tedious process that depends on the public seeing a real motive for the boycott and that depends on a willingness to do without the product. Even Trump fans aren’t going to go out of their way to boycott Merck simply because the president asked them to…”

“Put simply, successful boycotts demand a concerted, vocal effort with dedicated resources. They require the demonstration of a viable threat.”

Big Business Starts to Speak Out

April 2, 2021 at 7:00 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Reuters: “A push to attract young and diverse talent and global consumers is behind some of corporate America’s willingness to speak out on politically charged issues like Georgia’s new voting law.”

“The companies criticizing the law so far represent a sliver of the U.S. business landscape. Yet they are part of a growing group of companies shedding their reluctance to speak out on politically controversial social issues that matter to many of their employees and customers globally.”

March 19, 2021 at 7:10 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“A Pro-Biden group, operating with the White House’s blessing, plans to raise unlimited funds — and grant donors anonymity — as it prepares to promote and protect the president’s agenda from the outside,” Axios reports.

“By not capping anonymous contributions, the group, called Building Back Together, will have an easier time raising money, ahead of its anticipated launch next month to defend Biden’s policies.”
