Friend of Eric Adams at Center of Straw Donor Scheme

July 7, 2023 at 1:58 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“An acquaintance of New York City Mayor Eric Adams is at the center of an alleged straw-donor scheme, announced by the Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg Friday, that funneled tens of thousands of dollars in illicit contributions to the Democratic mayor’s campaign,” Politico reports.

“Dwayne Montgomery is a retired deputy inspector with the NYPD, where he overlapped with Adams before the mayor retired to pursue a political career.”

“According to an indictment unveiled by Bragg Friday, Montgomery was among six people charged with an elaborate scheme to circumvent campaign finance laws and ply the campaign with cash in the hopes of currying favor for future business deals with the city, once Adams was elected.”

Eric Adams Faked Photo of Fallen Officer

July 6, 2023 at 11:31 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

New York City Mayor Eric Adams (D) claimed he carried around a photo of a police officer friend who died in the line of duty in 1987, the New York Times reports.

“But the weathered photo of Officer Venable had not actually spent decades in the mayor’s wallet. It had been created by employees in the mayor’s office in the days after Mr. Adams claimed to have been carrying it in his wallet.”

“The employees were instructed to create a photo of Officer Venable, according to a person familiar with the request. A picture of the officer was found on Google; it was printed in black-and-white and made to look worn as if the mayor had been carrying it for some time, including by splashing some coffee on it, said the person, who spoke on the condition of anonymity for fear of retribution.”

July 5, 2023 at 6:40 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

New York Times: “They are not planning to divorce, they said, but will date other people. They will continue to share the Park Slope townhouse where they raised their two children, now in their 20s — the vinyl-sided hub of a thoroughly modern political family whose mixed-race symbolism helped send a spindly progressive long shot to City Hall.”

Changing Places

June 24, 2023 at 7:29 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Jeffrey Toobin: “Linda Fairstein and Yusef Salaam—their names emerge from the mists of semi-recent New York history. Their fates became linked on April 19, 1989, when the woman who became known as the Central Park jogger was assaulted. Fairstein was a prosecutor in the case, Salaam a defendant. She won a conviction; he went to prison. But in the years that followed, they have all but changed places, with their lives and reputations following contrasting sine curves.”

“Today, Fairstein lives in a kind of exile on a small island off the west coast of Florida. Salaam, who was ultimately cleared in the jogger case, shakes hands at subway stops in Harlem nearly every morning, with the same practiced pitch: ‘I’m Yusef Salaam, one of the Exonerated Five. I’m running for City Council, and I’d like your support.’ Election Day is June 27.”
