November 4, 2019 at 6:05 am EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Los Angeles Times: “Autumn in California now comes not only with fierce, wind-driven wildfires but with routine claims from President Trump that the state’s leaders are to blame for the disasters, followed by assurances from experts that the president doesn’t know what he’s talking about.”

“The cycle renewed again Sunday, when Trump tweeted that Gov. Gavin Newsom and U.S. Rep. Adam Schiff had failed to properly manage the state’s forests, causing a string of recent blazes.”

Tillerson Says Says Climate Change ‘With Us Forever More’

October 31, 2019 at 2:09 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“It’s rare for a current or former leader of one of the world’s largest energy producers to testify under oath about climate change. That’s why a New York courtroom was packed on Wednesday to see ex-Exxon Mobil Corp. Chief Executive Officer Rex Tillerson take the witness stand and explain that the company knew for years how it was a significant threat to the world,” Bloomberg reports.

Said Tillerson: “We knew, we knew it was a real issue. We knew it was a serious issue and we knew it was one that’s going to be with us now, forevermore, and it’s not something that was just suddenly going to disappear off of our concern list because it is going to be with us for certainly well beyond my lifetime.”

October 14, 2019 at 3:02 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Reuters: “In a joint declaration, climate scientists, physicists, biologists, engineers and others from at least 20 countries broke with the caution traditionally associated with academia to side with peaceful protesters courting arrest from Amsterdam to Melbourne… The declaration was coordinated by a group of scientists who support Extinction Rebellion, a civil disobedience campaign that formed in Britain a year ago and has since sparked offshoots in dozens of countries.”

Climate Denial Thrives In D.C. Echo Chambers

October 3, 2019 at 10:43 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

A new study shows the tendency for Washington policymakers to not accept mainstream climate science is growing inside echo chambers and under President Trump.

Axios: “The research adds some quantitative heft to the notion that Trump, who regularly dismisses and mocks climate change, is having a tangible impact among America’s most influential policy experts working inside the beltway of Washington, D.C.”

“Echo chambers — the concept that people share views only with those with similar views — have formed relatively quickly among policy leaders around misinformation of climate science under the Trump administration.”

September 24, 2019 at 8:21 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

President Trump responded to an impassioned plea at the United Nations by teenage climate activist Greta Thunberg with a sarcastic late-night tweet.

Said Trump: “She seems like a very happy young girl looking forward to a bright and wonderful future. So nice to see!”

Trump attached video of Thunberg’s angry remarks to the gathering in New York: “People are suffering, people are dying, entire ecosystems are collapsing. We are in the beginning of a mass extinction, and all you can talk about is money and fairy tales of eternal economic growth.”

Trump Will End California’s Stricter Auto Emissions Rules

September 17, 2019 at 3:09 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“The Trump administration is expected on Wednesday to formally revoke California’s legal authority to set tailpipe pollution rules that are stricter than federal rules, in a move designed by the White House to strike twin blows against both the liberal-leaning state that President Trump has long antagonized and the environmental legacy of President Barack Obama,” the New York Times reports.

“The announcement that the White House will revoke one of California’s signature environmental policies will come while Mr. Trump is traveling in the state, where he is scheduled to attend fund-raisers in Los Angeles and Silicon Valley.”

September 13, 2019 at 9:04 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

A new Washington Post/Kaiser Family Foundation poll finds that a strong majority of Americans — about 8 in 10 — say that human activity is fueling climate change, and roughly half believe action is urgently needed within the next decade if humanity is to avert its worst effects. Nearly 4 in 10 now say climate change is a “crisis,” up from less than a quarter five years ago.

However, two-thirds say President Trump is doing too little to tackle the problem.

Trump Rolls Back Landmark Water Protections

September 12, 2019 at 4:10 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“The Trump administration on Thursday announced the repeal one of the Obama era’s most sweeping environmental rules — a set of pollution protections for small streams and wetlands that had riled up opposition from coal miners, home developers, farmers and oil and gas drillers,” Politico reports.

“The action creates instant doubts about the legal status of myriad seasonal or isolated wetlands and thousands of miles of waterways, including vast swaths of the arid West. And it clears the way for the Environmental Protection Agency to finish a follow-up regulation in the coming months that could leave most of the nation’s wetlands without any federal safeguards.”

CNBC: “Environmental groups condemned the move, claiming that loosening restrictions will substantially harm the country’s sources of safe drinking water.”

Trump Rolls Back Rules on Energy-Efficient Bulbs

September 4, 2019 at 11:24 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“The Trump administration announced new rules on Wednesday to roll back requirements for energy-saving light bulbs, a move that could contribute to the greenhouse gas emissions that cause climate change,” the New York Times reports.

“The gradual shift toward more efficient light bulbs is one of the largely unsung success stories in the fight to reduce energy use and greenhouse gas emissions.”
