Pope Francis Calls for Civil Union Laws

October 21, 2020 at 9:57 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Pope Francis, in a new documentary, has called for the creation of civil union laws for same-sex couples, in what amounts to his clearest support to date for the issue,” the Washington Post reports.

“Priests in some parts of the world bless same-sex marriage, but that stance — and Francis’s new remarks — are a departure from official church teaching.”

GOP Lawmaker Could Get Booted Over Gay Wedding

June 12, 2020 at 7:32 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“A small universe of Republican Party activists will drive through the parking lot of a central Virginia church on Saturday to decide the fate of Rep. Denver Riggleman (R-VA),” Politico reports.

“A one-term congressman with a libertarian streak, Riggleman has found himself locked in a fierce intraparty battle after he enraged local officials in his district by officiating a same-sex marriage last year. His reelection prospects are further hampered by Virginia’s insular election system, which allows a paltry number of GOP delegates to choose the nominee at a convention.”

The Kiss

April 17, 2019 at 1:19 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Tim Miller: “The kiss itself wasn’t anything particularly noteworthy, as far as kisses go. It wasn’t Al and Tipper tonguing down in Los Angeles. Or hot Instagram stars trying to lure more followers to their account. Nor was it a perfunctory peck on the cheek or the forehead. It was quite simply a married couple, lips locked, arm around each other’s shoulder.”

“What stopped me wasn’t the kiss, but the kissers. They were both men and one of them is Pete Buttigieg, candidate for president of the United States.”

“And that’s why that kiss, to borrow a phrase from one of Pete’s prospective primary opponents, was a ‘big fucking deal.'”

Tennessee Tries Again to Prohibit Same-Sex Weddings

February 11, 2019 at 10:00 am EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“After failing to advance last session, Republicans have again filed legislation to keep Tennessee from permitting same-sex marriages, a bill officials previously estimated could cost the state more than $9 billion in federal funding,” the Tennessean reports.

“The bill would prohibit government officials — presumably including clerks issuing marriage certificates — from giving recognizing any court ruling that affirms same-sex unions, and specifies they cannot be arrested for failing to comply with court orders that do so.”

How Democrats Could Use Karl Rove’s Playbook

June 29, 2018 at 11:18 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

This piece is only available to Political Wire members.

Ahead of the 2004 presidential election, Karl Rove engineered ballot initiatives in about a dozen states to pass bans on same-sex marriage. It was a cynical attempt to lift turnout in some key states to help narrowly re-elect George W. Bush.

Court Sides With Baker Who Turned Away Gay Couple

June 4, 2018 at 10:38 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

The Supreme Court ruled for a Colorado baker who refused to create a wedding cake for a gay couple, the Washington Post reports.

New York Times: “Justice Anthony Kennedy, writing for the majority in the 7-2 decision, relied on narrow grounds, saying a state commission had violated the Constitution’s protection of religious freedom in ruling against the baker, who had refused to create a custom wedding cake for a gay couple.”

April 23, 2018 at 8:16 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Birmingham News: “When Deidre Downs was crowned Miss America more than a decade ago, the idea of legalized gay marriage and Miss America later marrying her same-sex partner in Alabama would have been an unimaginable future.”

“Times have changed.”

Robertson Says He’s Being Dominated By Homosexuals

April 6, 2018 at 6:02 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Pat Robertson said on The 700 Club that homosexuals are drowning out voices like his.

Said Robertson: “We have given the ground to a small minority. You figure, lesbians, one percent of the population; homosexuals, two percent of the population. That’s all. That’s statistically all. But they have dominated — dominated the media, they’ve dominated the cultural shift and they have infiltrated the major universities.”

He added: “It’s just unbelievable what’s being done. A tiny, tiny minority makes a huge difference. The majority — it’s time it wakes up.”

Roy Moore Suggests America Is Evil

August 11, 2017 at 7:46 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

When The Guardian told Alabama U.S. Senate candidate Roy Moore (R) that Ronald Reagan once called Russia “the focus of evil in the modern world,” Moore replied, “You could say that very well about America, couldn’t you?”

He added: “We promote a lot of bad things,” specifically citing same-sex marriage.

When the reporter suggested that’s an argument Vladimir Putin makes, Moore said, “Well, then maybe Putin is right. Maybe he’s more akin to me than I know.”

Justices Take Case on Denying Services to Gay Couples

June 26, 2017 at 10:07 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“The Supreme Court on Monday agreed to hear an appeal from a Colorado baker with religious objections to same-sex marriage who had lost a discrimination case for refusing to create a cake to celebrate such a union,” the New York Times reports.

“The case will be a major test of a clash between laws that bar businesses open to the public from discriminating based on sexual orientation and claims of religious freedom. Around the nation, businesses like bakeries, florists and photography studios have said, so far with little success, that forcing them to serve gay couples violates their constitutional rights.”
