After an earlier 61 to 38 cloture vote, the U.S. Senate passed a short-term debt limit extension by a much closer 50 to 48, Roll Call reports.
The bill now heads to the House for a vote likely next week.
Washington Post: “Lawmakers adopted the proposal strictly along party lines, with Democrats voting to lift the country’s borrowing cap by $480 billion and Republicans maintaining their steadfast opposition to it. The divide persisted even amid repeated warnings from President Biden this week that inaction threatened to plunge the country into a new recession.”
