After weeks of trying to come up with yet another position on abortion, Donald Trump thought he was clever to finally say on Monday that he would just leave it up to the states.

The next day the Arizona Supreme Court reinstated an 1864 law that banned abortion outright. It’s one of the most draconian abortion bans in the nation — passed during an era before Arizona was even a state and before women could vote.
