China Hits Back at Trump with Tariffs

“China has announced tariffs on a swath of US imports and opened an antitrust probe into Google in retaliation against Donald Trump’s new tariffs,” the Financial Times reports.

“Beijing unveiled additional tariffs of between 10 and 15 per cent on US liquefied natural gas, coal, crude oil and farm equipment, which it said would take effect on February 10. China will also impose tariffs on some car imports from the US and additional export controls on rare metals.”

Playbook: “Trump has said he expects to speak with Chinese President Xi Jinping in the coming days. Might we see another rapid deal that removes these tariffs? Plenty of GOP types on the Hill would be unimpressed by that, given their growing suspicion that Trump is significantly less hawkish on China than they’d been led to believe.”

Goddard spent more than a decade as managing director and chief operating officer of a prominent investment firm in New York City. Previously, he was a policy adviser to a U.S. Senator and Governor.
