French President Emmanuel Macron reportedly asked the EU to activate its “Anti-Coercion Instrument,” known as the “trade bazooka,” CNN reports.

It could block some of America’s access to EU markets or impose export controls, among other potential countermeasures.

Playbook: “Trump’s decision Saturday to unleash economic warfare on America’s European and NATO allies as they resist his advances on Greenland has tipped an awkward diplomatic clash into a crisis, and a reeling Europe is now weighing its response.”

Wall Street Journal: “Behind the scenes, European officials are searching for ways to respond to the president without escalating the situation into a broader trade spat or capitulating on security in the face of his trade threats.”

Taegan Goddard is the founder of Political Wire, one of the earliest and most influential political web sites. He also runs Political Job Hunt, Electoral Vote Map and the Political Dictionary.

Goddard spent more than a decade as managing director and chief operating officer of a prominent investment firm in New York City. Previously, he was a policy adviser to a U.S. Senator and Governor.
